Amazon Prime Day 2018 (1 Viewer)

Thanks GB. Don't take this the wrong way but it's okay to assume that I have read multiple reviews. I only ask in here because...well I trust you guys a little more than reviews (even after I use Fakespot to suss out b.s. reviews).

You a Traeger man? Or have personal experience with them?

Actually Hey @Joe Bryant, I think I know the answer to this but how do you feel about Traeger grill/smokers? I am pretty sure they don't fit your authenticity bucket so I think you may have an interesting view on the value of such a good deal for someone looking to be a "weekender" on the BBQ/smoking front.

And FTR I am 100% certain I can achieve almost identical smoking results through modernist techniques (which is, generally speaking, my cooking wheelhouse) but I love fire and outdoor cooking and all that too so I like the idea of the grill/smoking combo the Traeger seems to offer. Your opinion matters to me on stuff like this.

Are you asking about Traeger in general? Ibought a junior elite this year that I love , only wish I bought bigger. Great ribs & burgers and made my 1st brisket last week . Big fan. The only you are looking at has a nice door to clean the ashes, really nice feature

Just do it.  A lot of people love Traeger (I'm a Weber guy so I don't know first hand).  I spent over 400 on a home brewing system and I have no idea how well it's going to work.  You got this.

:lmao: I'm sure you're waiting on my opinion. ;)

No comment on these. I do see them making a massive push with influencers on social media. Not quite Yeti level but they're definitely making a big spend to get the word out via influencers.

Interesting comparison to Yeti JB, it has me thinking twice (I am not a Yeti fan) but from a different perspective than I thought you would come from, and not one I had considered. So are you saying that Traeger is the Yeti of grills? That means something to me because I think Yeti is among the most overpriced products on the market.

And thanks @Joe Bryant I actually was waiting on your perspective the same way I presume you would wait on my perspective about immersion circulators or the Cinder...or tacos ;)

Sorry, I don't mean they're overpriced, I honestly have no idea how they stack up price wise and I don't know their cost. I've just found the yeti thing super interesting. They have guys that are grabbing catfish with their hands as spokespeople. Guys that in my experience would never come remotely close to buying a cooler the cost of a Yeti. Yet, they try to position themselves as the regular guy cooler. Seems fascinating.

I have no idea if the Traegers are priced the same way but I see a similar push among some of the BBQ influencers where suddenly they are all about posting pictures of what's cooking ON THEIR NEW TRAEGER. It just seems kind of funny to me. i'm all for influencers making money off the work they did building an audience. Lots of it though isn't hard to see through.

With all that said, I don't know enough about Traeger to have an opinion.

Thanks JB I never would have looked at it from that perspective. Gonna do some more research.

Does anyone know what Amazon’s shipping policy is these days for NON Prime customers? Is it still something like free shipping on $25+ orders?

ETA: found it. Yes it’s free for orders of $25 or more. I am considering cancelling Prime. $120/year for very little benefit.

I bought a Traeger from Costco about 18 months ago, and really like it. It doesn’t get as hot as advertised, so you still have to have another grill around if you’re going to sear anything. But it’s so convenient that we use it at least weekly for things like whole chickens or pork, and once a month or so for slower cooks like ribs or brisket.  I have had it go out on me a couple of times due to it not feeding the pellets so I bought a wireless thermometer, and just go out and check the hopper once an hour or so.

Of course I also own a Yeti, fwiw :)

@belljr

Eh, I just remembered I caught a deal going on last month.  I logged on and checked and they are at regular price again, at least for the DiamondClean.  Sorry.

ETA: I got $80 off two pack of DiamondClean, regularly $299.

Being extremely intimate with the influencer culture of BBQ and grilling, yes, Traeger is spending more than anyone and has a MASSIVE array of influencers. I've heard a number that tops 300. I'm extremely familiar because I was the #1 influencer for them last year in terms of reach. Not that I'm the top dog. There are bigger names out there (Myron, Lilly, Tuffy, Moe, the Orrisons, etc), but they are locked in with other brands.

Just curious, in round numbers, what kind of money are they paying the top influencers?

the cloud cam? how do you like it?
Just ordered 3 so I haven't tried them yet.

Had my house broken into a few years back. Lost the wifes wedding ring, other jewelry, $1000 cash, xbox, my basketball shoes.

We STRONGLY suspect the teen neighbors a couple houses down. Real bad eggs. They got busted for breaking into another house. Really wish I had these then.

Reading the description and reviews, seems the picture quality is good and motion detection functions as advertised. I'm going to try them without the subscription.

Seems that with motion detection and free 24 hour cloud storage, I would think that they would make me aware of any situations while happening that I could then download.

If I find a need to upgrade to the $70 a year for 7 day cloud storage than so be it.

Just wish they were available in black.

off...sorry to hear that. Most of the outside of our house is protected  by Ring devices, and I want something inside but I cant see paying "Ring" prices for in indoor cam. I wish they offered a cheaper indoor cam b/c we already have the video plan, but they don't. I think I'm cool with amazon b/c the 24 hour thing is free and you can DL the video. If your house is getting broken into you usually know within the 24 hours.

thanks and GL with them .

almost pulled the trigger on 2 of these. Any chance you can post a review here or in the amazon prime thread once you have had them for a while?

I've got two of the Amazon Cloud Cam's in the house. Partly to keep an eye on the dog or the kids when we aren't home, and then for similar reasons as others have noted - in case of break-in, etc. as there had been some recent break ins when I got them. The Amazon software has a feature that they can automatically turn off/not record when you are home (based on detecting your phone on the same network, varying sensitivity and notification levels, and you can mark certain areas within the view of the camera for it to ignore as far as motion. I have one positioned upstairs that points down and covers our living room where the dog usually is and includes our main TV in the view. If the TV was on, certain scenes would trigger the motion detection, so I was able to select the area where the TV is and have it not trigger motion detection. Our second camera is pointed towards our front door.

When I saw they were down to $60 I considered grabbing a couple more, but I have no real need or location to put one unless I wanted to put one covering the garage entry into the house. Instead I got the Ring Cams (not doorbells) with spotlight to cover the area over the garage and then part of the backyard.

thanks,  Just recently installed the RING and love it.   Was looking at the Cams next to replace my Foss cam

Got my Roomba in last night.  Very satisfied after being hesitant.  We have a good layout for a bot like that, but it still has to navigate a few rugs and those damn curtains that lay on the floor (cant stand this curtain fad).

what are the Ring cams? Can someone post a link?
their big seller is the door bell cam with 2 way speaker, etc. But they offer other items like floodlights, and other security camera. they are just rather expensive overall for similar products. the big thing, for us, is that we area already in the Ring ecosystem b/c of the doorbell, so adding other cameras would mean other apps, other subscription plans, etc.

So my two older boys decide they want to play on their Kindle Fire Kids edition again. They have been shoved in a cabinet for so long we weren't sure they would charge. Had to reset to factory specs because the oldest hacked his and somehow changed the admin password (talk about being pissed and proud at the same time). So now boy #3 really wants one. Any idea how much I would've saved had this all transpired a week ago and I picked one up on Prime Day? They are $99 now.

Depends on the one you were looking at.  I got a pair of Fire 10 HD's (not Kid's edition) for $99 each on Prime day.  $150 now.  They have had a sale for 2 Fire 10 HD Kids' Editions for $299 ($150 each) for a while.

Significantly less if you get the 7 or the 8...

Thousands a month.
That makes sense. I'd be fascinated to know how effective it is. To me, it seems so forced and awkward I'd think most people see it's pure mercenary stuff. But I'd be interested in how much it helps them. Did an event of some sort happen that put them into overdrive on the influencer marketing? Were they acquired by another company or something?

So old man Traeger sold the company to a venture capital firm. There are two types of those. Those that want to improve a product and those that want to drain every nickel out of it. The latter bought Traeger. Moved them to China and the quality dropped big time. Then they were bought out by the good kind of venture capital firm who kept them in China, but moved them to a region known for better quality and had a number of Traeger employees on the floor during every shift. They upped the quality, started building new units from scratch and then hired all the ambassadors to show how things have changed for the better.

My contract was pretty simple. I had to feature them three times a month somehow some way on my Instagram feed. That was pretty simple. I'm cooking so much they wanted to make sure I was doing it on their grill. For some folks it wasn't even that stringent in terms of guidelines. It was just, "Here's a grill," or, "Here's a grill and a check. Don't promote anyone else." Or at least no other pellet grills.

Now they are getting more strict. They used to require exclusivity in pellet grills only, which I gave them because the money was good. But then they wanted exclusivity across all grill brands so I had to check out and look for other sponsors. We ended on good terms. I'd work with them again. I'd even give them exclusivity, but they would have to pay for it.

UPS man is gonna hate my ### today...all my prime day stuff is on its way.
I did the get free digital credit shipping as I didn't need anything right away and all my stuff got delivered yesterday, a couple of days earlier than estimated!

I did get that on 1 or 2 items...but some of it I needed ASAP b/c of vacation coming up this week, wanted to have them set up before we go, like the smart sprinkler system I ordered.

But I do like that option. One year, we got $5 credits for Prime Pantry and we used it to ship groceries to our vacation spot for free. Worked out great.

I find (with chromecast, not fire tv) that some apps work better on it that they do through my SmartTV, In trying to find out why, I've read that some app/content providers are no longer providing support for their apps for all Smart TV's, because there are so many different makes and models, so they're focusing support on Apple TV/Chromecast/Fire TV/Roku etc...
I picked up some FireTV (6 in total including one 4K and 1 cube - so I didn’t need a universal remote like I have on my 3rd floor that was more than cube) on Monday. I noticed when I was looking at all my setups (to see how many to get) that the Hulu app my Vizio said it wouldn’t be supported after August 3rd. That made up my mind to just go all in on the FireTVs. The cube is pretty slick and I like the Firestick better than the appleTV I have.

Swung by the hardware stores this weekend and a Traeger sales guy was setup at the front entrance doing demo's. Can't remember if it was Home Depot or Ace Hardware as I went to both that day.

I'd never even heard of Traeger until this thread last week.
