Americans dress like slobs compared to the rest of the world (2 Viewers)

Went to PGA Friday & wife warned me "Dress nice" (in case she could get me into her company's chalet - which she did). I had planned on a golf shirt & nice shorts anyway. Walking around with my BIL, we were struck by some of the shirts people decided to wear (an Albany River Rats jersey??). Then on Sunday they show the amount of people in Bills jersies, Zubaz shirts etc and wife says "they make us look like hillbillies up here"

It's an outdoor sporting event. Wear whatever is best suited for the temperature and something that is comfortable. Also - don't wear your ****ing golf shoes as a spectator. That is dumb

Wearing golf shoes is a thing?

the newer ones without full spikes are quite comfy to walk around in all day....... I still wear sneakers

The only time I ever wore gofl shoes when I knew it was going to be raining all day - and went with the waterproof golf shoe. I was also a marshall so .....

Yes. Weird, I know.

That’s like wearing bowling shoes, but worse

Going to the opening of a friend’s art exhibit at the Honolulu Museum of Modern Art. My outfit? Beige prana climbing pants, Patagonia aloha shirt and Olukai slippers + iWatch. No stains or wrinkles. Toenails clipped and clean.

It’s an inside/outside venue in 85 degree weather. Guests will likely include at least one former mayor.

Fashion police thoughts?
Just got in a pair of these Prana’s. These might be life changing for me, very nice pant. I know this wasn’t an official recommendation, but thanks for posting. Really happy with them.

Yeah, they fit well, are multipurpose and slightly water resistant. Fashion po-po won’t like the side pocket, but it’s subtle, and can hold a phone better than alternatives.

I’ve noticed this too, basketball shorts and t shirts at Manny’s, etc. If you’re not even going to dress up a little bit for that…..always seemed odd to me.
I love Manny’s steakhouse and yes, I’ve seen that and worse. Why would anyone spend that kind of money for a great steak and a fine dining setting and not make some attempt to look decent? Minnesota is as casual as anyplace I’ve ever been.
Had Manny’s back in December. Pretty sure I was rocking jeans and tennis shoes. The horror!
Yeah I’m jeans, tennies and a golf shirt if it’s a nice establishment.

I like to dress appropriately for the job, or the weather, or the restaurant, or the event, or the venue, but I absolutely hate tucking my shirt in.

Especially here in Minnesota. You can always spot an American tourist in Europe with their shorts and baseball cap. Europeans dress nice most of the time. Living here in Minnesota it’s cringy seeing guys wear baseball caps and faded jeans hanging halfway down their butt in a nice restaurant. Women aren’t any better.

What's your normal way of dressing and what is the environment?

I find it interesting how quickly what is acceptable to wear in our society has changed. When I was a kid, my grandfather wouldn't leave the house without wearing dress pants and a collared shirt. I'm not sure if the man owned a t-shirt or shorts. Then I recall my first job at the grocery store in the mid 90's. I had to wear a tie and had to be clean shaven- no facial hair of any kind was allowed. Imagine that now? Last, I became a teacher in 2002. My first awards assembly, I showed up in a long sleeve, button up shirt. I quickly felt underdressed when almost all staff members were wearing a full suit. Fast forward to now and almost every teacher is wearing a polo shirt and none are wearing ties.
my grandpa owned shorts and t-shirts

they were boxers and white undershirts only. never saw him in anything but slacks and a button up outside of the house. and a coat if he was going anywhere at all. that was their generation.

My grandfather story.

My grandfather grew up in rural MIssissippi. Farmer and country gentleman. Work clothes during the week and suit for church on Sunday.

He was 70+ years old the first time he was on a plane.

I remember as a kid going to the airport to pick him up.

He strolled off the plane looking like a million bucks wearing a suit and tie.

I said, "Wow. You look nice".

He didn't skip a beat and said in his Southern drawl, "Thank you, Son. I genuh-ally fly this way".

Do we have a "What's appropriate way to dress for men?" thread?

Seems like we should.
It would be hilarious. We are all very different. There’s a hoodie thread going right now. It’s cracking me up thinking of all these portly middle aged guys rolling around in their hoodies. Especially if they’re actually using the hood. :lmao:

It’s 48 and breezy, **** yeah I’m using my hood! :gang2:

Yeah, I'm wearing a hoodie today because it's cold. And jeans because they're comfortable. I care about how I feel more than what people think. I'll dress for the occasion but I try to limit the number of occasions.

I was living in Germany in 2000. We were at a bar and this guy walks up to us. Obviously Americans he says and asked us if we knew how he knew that He told us to lift up your pants. The four of us lifted up our pants to reveal white socks. He says only Americans where white socks. Ha ha. That always stuck with me and haven't had white socks since.

Same. I know this will blow some minds but I even mix up both worlds and wear a hoodie under my sports coat if it's chilly and I want to class it up a bit.

I've been doing it since the early 00s but I guess it's a thing now - the second to last photo looks like my :style: https://www.deoveritas.com/blog/blazer-with-hoodie/

I have always thought that looked pretty douchey. Either dress up or don't. Never liked that look. Almost as bad as sneakers with a suit. Do both and it's even worse.

(but I have no fashion sense at all and dress strictly for comfort. I am not trying to impress anyone)

You would hate my friends. Several of them have got married in sneakers.
