Any news on Vincent Jackson trade rumors? (2 Viewers)

Adam_Schefter‎: There will be no trade for WR Vincent Jackson today, despite the fact that one team, presumably Minnesota, tried hard to get it done.

Despite contract terms with more than one team, no Vincent Jackson trade

Posted by Mike Florio on September 22, 2010 4:03 PM ET

The deadline for trading receiver Vincent Jackson has come and gone, and the player remains the property of the Chargers.

Agent Neil Schwartz tells us that he had worked out with more than one team an acceptable contract for Jackson, and that the deal did not get done.

Schwartz blames the lack of a deal on the Chargers' demands.

"Other General Managers, felt that the Chargers were being totally unreasonable," Schwartz told us by phone.

"Archie Manning had it right about this organization," Schwartz said.

I don't see how Chargers fans could be happy with this. There were three options:

1 - you keep a great WR

2 - lose WR, but you get a 2011 2nd and a 2012 ~3rd-5th

3 - lose WR, but you get a 2012 3rd

AJ = Fail, again.

Don't you think this will affect future FAs desire to sign with SD and therefore have to deal with AJ Smith? Seems like the guy lets it get too personal.

We'll never know exactly what was said by all parties involved but from what I'm reading AJ Smith is a total #####. Why would you settle for a compensatory 3rd (speculation) when you could get a 2nd and something else?

If the "reports" are really true, I think this does officially make AJ an idiot in this case despite what his benefactors might think of him.

The MOST he will get as a comp would be a 3rd/4th round tweener pick. He clearly had an offer for a 2nd rounder+.

I don't think ANYONE really believes Jackson will ever play for SD again, so is there any reason other than spite to not take that deal?

I'm very surprised something didn't happen. Kudos to the folks who had it pegged.

I'd like to get perspective on how Charger fans feel about this

AJ seems to have alienated potential FAs and other GMs, and cost his team a 2nd rounder

If the GM could have gotten a 2nd and a conditional pick and chose not to then that's dumb. I would be pissed if I were a Charger fan. The new CBA may not include compensatory picks and if it does it will just be a 3rd, right?

How can any Charger fan be happy with this? You win the power ploy but hurt your team in the process.

so what now for vjax owners?
He can still be traded, right? The trade deadline is still a few weeks away. Technically, he can still sign and play for SD this year, right? I know it might be unlikely, but these are still possible?
I think this makes a trade completely out of the question. Yes I guess it is possible that VJax could still sign later, but something tells me that he wont'.

NELVIN C. CEPEDA / UNION-TRIBUNE

Vincent Jackson scores a touchdown last December against the Bengals.

Vincent Jackson remains a Charger.

But not really.

The Chargers did not trade Jackson by a 1 p.m. deadline, and the disgruntled receiver is expected to sit out the remainder of the season.

The Minnesota Vikings were the leading and most sincere candidates to get Jackson, but the Chargers would not budge off their asking price. Reportedly, that price was a second-round pick and a third-round pick in 2011. If it remained that high until the end, it means Chargers General Manager A.J. Smith did not budge from what was believed to be his asking price for months.

Jackson is now eligible to play after the Chargers’ sixth game of the season. That almost certainly only matters if he is traded, which is still a possibility before the NFL trading deadline of Oct. 19.

Jackson has said he will sit out the season rather than play for the Chargers’ one-year tender. That tender would pay Jackson just $377,235 if he returned for Week 7.

Jackson is suspended the first three games of the season for his violation of the NFL’s Substance Abuse policy. The Chargers also placed him on the Roster Exempt List, which precludes him from playing in three games after he signs and reports.

The NFL Players Association argued that the Roster Exempt status does not apply if Jackson is traded. The league and union reached a settlement last week that allowed Jackson to play in his new team’s fifth game if he were traded by 1 p.m. (PT) Wednesday.

Jackson was a restricted free agent who did not sign his one-year tender, unhappy the Chargers did not give him a long-term deal. On June 15, the Chargers slashed the $3.268 million tender to $583,000, and Jackson loses about $34,000 every week he miss

Cut off his nose to spite his face. How can anyone pass up a 2nd round pick in 2011 + conditional pick just to get personal revenge. Think the backlash would be pretty strong, but SD fans seem to be really loyal to AJ.

Why? Two more games really matter that much? A team might lose a WR to injury. SD could lower their price.

I agree. This is unlikely.

Why would San Diego lower their price? His value just went WAY down, as he loses 2 more weeks. So also, no team is going to INCREASE their offer, either.I guess anything could happen. But if the desperate Vikings and the trade-happy Redskins couldn't get it done when VJ could have played 12 games, I don't think any team is going to trade a 2nd and a 3rd for VJ to play 10 games.

As a Viking fan I'm glad the team didn't give up everything the Chargers wanted.

As a Vincent Jackson owner... :lmao:

SD fans in this thread seem happy about this but I can't understand why. Groovus or Multiple Scores, care to explain?
