Any Trading Cards guys? (Sports, etc) (2 Viewers)

Where is the best place to trade cards, for example I want to trade all Penix for Nabers....is there an affordable way to do that or should I just start hanging out with the neighborhood 12 year olds. :oldunsure:

Facebook groups I assume.
I've been on this FB group for a few years. Rarely see any issues and there are many posts selling everyday

I've bought tons of cards from here, and sold too. Agree - zero issues. The moderators are fantastic. It's by far the best place to sell cards as an individual who doesn't set up booths or have a shop.

Downtowns, Kabooms...now add Uptowns, Dual-Downtowns, Explosives, etc...J.J. McCarthy unnumbered, unsigned cards going for $1,400...a guy who hasn't even played a single NFL snap. I just don't get it. Guys holding lots of inventory are going to get absolutely burned when it crashes.
A lot of this stuff with the big repack/breakers I'm sure involves a lot of shill bidders. And these AI Downtowns are some of the worst cards I've seen.
Totally agree. Backyard Breaks is the epitome of what is wrong with the hobby - and they were accused of shill bidding a little bit ago...along with misogynistic comments and just general douche-baggery. They're not the only one, but they're almost the "model" for what a successful breaker does and how they operate.

I think your use of the word “misogynistic” is generous in this case. It was far more pedo.

Just joined this group recently. A lot of great deals. Have been addicted to watching.

Totally. I've spent way too much on that site. Used to use REA for a lot of my high-end purchasing, but this site is way better. Some of the guys on here have insane access to inventory.

I've made about 6-7 purchases in that group.

Trying to get ideas for players I want to add to my list to start buying. I have a little list to start, but probably forgetting some players or otherwise cool cards. Anyone have any favorite cards from the 70s, 80s, 90s, maybe 2000s and early 2010s? I'm probably looking to start with football and basketball, hockey probably a little later. Kind of lost interest in baseball over the years and have a fair amount of guys i would want already. Thanks for any ideas if anyone has any.

I don't have a lot of football cards, but this one might be my favorite. Given away free at the time, sealed inside packages of hot dogs. Oversized.

I'm a lifelong packer fan and do have a nice Favre rookie, but this one here looks like a nice addition. Very reasonable price too. If this is your's is there any wiggle room on price? Maybe first to do a full muscle up gets it?

I try to get as many Reds as I can, but I don't have a checklist that I keep track of. My favorite cards are multi-player cards, including leaders cards. I have been passively collecting these for years. I need to do an inventory soon so I don't buy duplicates.

Random answer, but Curtis Martin has a really pretty autograph.

Thanks, Curtis Martin needs to be on my list and i totally forgot about him.

Got a finalized list of football players i want to collect and got a value via average eBay auction prices. Thinking I'll start by getting a couple cheaper cards along with a mid price card at a time. I'll keep an eye on higher value cards and try to take advantage of any dips, or get one every 3rd or other buy (looking to purchase every couple months). Want to keep it topps base cards when possible and I like the graded PSA slabs.

Next I'll do basketball and then hockey. I figure at this rate it'll take the rest of my life to complete my list and I'm ok with that.

Been grabbing cheap limited autos of Sox prospects (Roman Anthony, Marcelo Mayer, Kristian Campbell)… some proofs and plates too. Mostly ~$20-80 range.

But just splurged on a Skenes 1/1 Encased Pre Production Proof that SEEMED like a deal at $375

Images: https://imgur.com/a/m2ITab3

Man today’s market is so confusing with the “parallels” and limited runs and whatnot.

Help me understand before I drop too much more into this pit 😂 Thanks

Generally, the proof is going to go for less than the actual card. I'm not really sure why.

FWIW, I have a lot of 2023 Leaf Metal/Exotic for football and just think it is a really underrated product.

I have noticed that!

I’m curious about the value of factory uncirculated encapsulation. It feels like it should carry some value (perhaps not PSA 10) vs just raw?

Also seems like run size is huge but also folks seem to somewhat prefer more traditional parallels vs the shimmer and whatnot.

Just learning. Tough to find comps with all the noise in the modern market but I’m having fun with it.

I’m not sure how it happened, but I caught the bug to start getting into this again. My interest is soccer. The fun part is collecting Newcastle United players, past and present. The degenerate part is what I have to control. Bought a hobby box of Panini Select Premier League and one Topps Chrome Champions League Blaster from a reputable local here in Phoenix. Having a pint next door and then going to go home and rip!

Also bought a bunch of Newcastle player commons and a Trippier auto.

I've been heavily into it for 9 months now. Having a blast.

My latest strategy has been loading up on Donruss Optic Football Holos...I bought 20 Pearsall Holos on eBay for 3 bucks a piece in hopes of flipping them for 10 bucks one day.

I like the speculative part as much as I enjoy the personal collection part.

I've been trying to buy a case of optic blasters online but it's impossible to find them at retail prices. People are using bots to snap them all up from Target/Dicks/BestBuy and then reselling for double on eBay/Amazon...it really sucks.

Also, my favorite thing to do at card shows is to search the dollar bins and find diamonds in the rough.

The hobby is in a middle of a renaissance because of guys like you and me getting back into it.

Everything has to be graded nowadays to be worth anything and that is expensive. Also, and correct me if I’m wrong, but it seems as if the inserts are the main attraction to opening a box of cards. I can’t say that I’m a fan.

I'm no expert, but you seem to be right about all of this.

That said, based on what I can glean from your posting history, you don't seem to often love things that are dramatically different than they were when you were young.

So far, I'm enjoying my reintroduction into this hobby with the way it is today.

Oh I love lots of things that are different from when I was young, but IMO the hobby has gotten too expensive. Kids can't afford to pay the high cost of a pack of cards today. It's almost as if the hobby is only geared to adults. Something doesn't seem right about that.

Edited: IMO only the vintage stuff will last the test of time and be worth investing in, but I could be wrong.

I agree with all this. I definitely have a blind spot when it comes to what kids would be interested in. I don't have any and never wanted any, so accessibility to kids doesn't really enter my head. Thanks for mentioning it - it does kinda suck that it's not geared towards kids as much, you're right.

I used to think this as well.
The kids are fine.
Go to a card show. These kids have cards in their little zion box worth 2-4X more than the car you drove to the card show

kids today are not the same as when we were kids in the 70's, 80's and 90's

The are not collecting looking at the stats on the back of the card.
They are not making sets
They are not even necessarily collecting their favorite players.
They are chasing and flipping cards.
They are learning more in 3 youtube videos at breakfast then we did in 14 months of talking to the fat guy at your local card shop

yes/no
grading has altered the landscape but plenty of raw cards sell (especially new)
I wouldn't pay high money for a vintage card not graded anymore but new but plenty of raw vintage and modern stuff sell for high value every day

Yea,
New boxes....especially the low end stuff....you know..the stuff for the kids....a base rookie of Cam Ward is worth a couple of bucks at best.
The chase is that same rookie cards' parallel version
it will be Cam Ward with yellow background and its numbered /249 that may be worth $15
The Cam Ward orange /49 will be worth $45
The Cam Ward blue with pink dots parallel is numbered 1/1 and only 1 exists
That may be worth $500

Then cards come autographed as well with some of the same numbered principles above

It's definitely confusing and a different language for old heads dipping their toes back in.
I have always dabbled since the mid 80s but got into it a bit more in 2018'

90% of what ii do is still 90's and back

Don't buy many packs at all and when i do...i have no idea what the hell i am doing

Also to add to this.
There are a lot of kids at the card shows.
Seemingly...the bigger the show the more kids.
They run around like little gangs with their little boxes and their lettuce head hairstyles having a blast.

I've been in and out for years. I think I've finally gotten over the ripping / lottery aspect of it and was just buying the singles that I wanted instead of wasting money on packs / boxes / breaks. My latest project was buying some cards of my favorite players growing up near Philly in the 80's. PSA 10's are a little too pricy for me, so I settled for putting together some 9's. These are now displayed on one of my desks and are in my background on conference calls:
1986 Fleer Charles Barkley - Most expensive but really wanted that 86 Fleer rookie
1983 Topps Mike Schmidt - Early cards are expensive and didn't like the look anyway so grabbed the one I liked the look of best and from my 80's era.
1987 Topps Randall Cunningham
1987 Topps Ron Hextall
2018 Panini Classics Saquon Barkley - Ok, not 80's but he's PSU and PHI and it's my favorite of him in a PSU uni.

Other non-Philly cards that are more my youth card collecting landmarks:
1989 Fleer Bill Ripken FF
1989 UD Ken Griffey Jr
1986 Donruss Jose Canseco - My first "best" card I owned and one of my early favorite non-Philly players in the 80's.

Ideas for other cards to add:
1967 Topps Bob Uecker - He's was on the Phillies for a year, and it's Bob Uecker... juuuuust a bit outside.
1999 Pokemon Base Set Charizard - My kids got me into Pokemon Go on and off, might as well add the OG to the collection,

Any other ideas for cards to look for that fit the theme?

So I did a bit of collecting on my youth, mostly baseball. My son has gotten into pokemon cards recently. Our local hobby/game store knows him pretty well. He went in this weekend to get his two packs (the store limits purchases to two packs a week - they sell out very quickly), and he pulls some rare hologram card worth over $200! They offer him $150 in store credit on the spot (to a kid saving up for a switch2), and he politely declines.

How volatile is that particular market?

In the junk wax era I remember wanting the 89 Hoops David Robinson.

I am getting a PSA sub back this week of 1973 Topps
My Schmidt got an 8
Seaver a 9
Rose a 7
Yaz an 8
I think out of 24 cards....15 were 8/9?
That grader must have got laid that weekend or something

From what i have been seeing on the sidelines Pokemon was down last couple years but has been surging lately.
Knowing nothing really but just the markets...comp it out and sell it for his switch.
is it worth grading?
Would a 10 sell for $700 or something?

1999 Pokemon Base Set Charizard - My kids got me into Pokemon Go on and off, might as well add the OG to the collection,

Any other ideas for cards to look for that fit the theme?

I am getting a PSA sub back this week of 1973 Topps
My Schmidt got an 8
Seaver a 9
Rose a 7
Yaz an 8
I think out of 24 cards....15 were 8/9?
That grader must have got laid that weekend or something

That is an impressive grading haul for pre 80s

I'm in the middle of about (500) 72/73s Baseball/football and basketball

Lots of 5/6's and MISZRQ but many 7/8/9 as well.

So far I have hit (3) 10s...all 72 Topps baseball...thats a TINY % but been fun and interesting

Fingers crossed for what's still there!

I've gotten my son (12, 13 in November) into buying football cards. He loves "unboxing". I get him 4-5 packs a month, but man these things have gotten expensive!

I like that it keeps him entertained in something other than Switch, iPad, etc. He has a little storage thingy on his dresser where he keeps the pricier ones, and I like the fact that he spends some time doing research on prices online (not that those prices mean much).

I even had him go through about 50 baseball cards I had laying around (junky Topps from 1986, nothing real good) and looked them all up online. I told him if we sold them somehow that he could have 30% of what we get.

More than anything, though, it's something we can enjoy together now and in the near future.

From what i have been seeing on the sidelines Pokemon was down last couple years but has been surging lately.
Knowing nothing really but just the markets...comp it out and sell it for his switch.
is it worth grading?
Would a 10 sell for $700 or something?

No, it’s a $200 card in good/great condition. It’s already in a hard plastic case (the type that has screws). He has another $100+ card as well. Just don’t know if the smart move is to sell them now, or if they’ll go up in value (or crash).

I'll tell you now that if you're using those larger screw down slabs, don't. They will flatten the card down and ruin it. I had what I thought was a perfect Joe Montana rookie card in one of those for years and sent it to PSA for grading and they wouldn't grade it because the card wasn't the right thickness. You're better of just keeping it in a regular plastic holder until you send it in for grading.

eBay will experiment with open bidding if someone bids in the last 2 minutes of an auction, to deter sniping. Absolutely hate this as it will open it up to shill bidding. I know the other auction houses do this - I avoid them because of it.

I THINK he means a one touch with a screw?
I don't think anyone has those 4 screw downs anymore?
(I loved them BTW)
Also, SGC is notorious for grading those that PSA will not.
I sent a Bird/Magic RC to PSA and it was not graded, sent to SGC and got a 6.
Lastly...unfortunately if you send the Montana back to PSA another time or 2 you may get a grade on the next attemps.
Shenanigans...i know...but its part of the game

I ended up selling the Montana raw on e-bay for $200 I think. That was a long time ago, so it's hard to remember. Probably 10+ years ago. Yes, I should have sent it to another grading company. I was liquidating at the time. I'm not in the hobby any longer, even though I still have quite a few cards. What's a raw good locking Montana going for on e-bay these days?

How do you "know"?
I have heard this many many times but feel its become one of those

Centering is paramount more than ever

A nicely centered Montana with no other visible issues can go $300+
A nice looking Montana with centering issues can go for $100ish

That Montana was perfect in my mind, but not good enough to grade by PSA regarding the thickness of the card. It had perfect corners as well.

In the junk wax era I remember wanting the 89 Hoops David Robinson.

Yeah, that was a cool card. It had similar lore to the Griffey UD being Hoops first year as well. Unfortunately, that didn't last with Hoops printing so many damn cards. I have a few I can sell you though. I'll even make sure one is in a old school 4 screw holder if that wets your whistle. Probably worth $1 raw :lmao:

I don't have any intention getting back into the hobby. Unless you're targeting the good vintage stuff, I think it's a losing investment, especially with so many graded 9s and 10s with newer stuff. It's kind of just as bad with flooding the market as those years that produced too many cards. I don't see newer cards holding value long term because there are too many of them graded so high. That will drive down the price long term.
