Any Trading Cards guys? (Sports, etc) (1 Viewer)

Anyone chasing the first opportunity at Victor Wembanyama in Bowman Chrome University Basketball?
You can pick blasters up at about $25 and was thinking of buying a couple, and either opening or maybe just holding for a while.
I picked up a hobby box last week and will be keeping it sealed. There's a rumor that Wemby autos will be exclusive to Topps products - if that's true, it would make these pretty valuable IMO. Could be completely false, though. I haven't seen any legit sources.

One thing to note about Wembanyama's Bowman U stuff is that even his base cards are SSP for some reason. Even rarer than a case hit, maybe 1 Wemby base per 2-4 cases. I assume this will make them almost impossible to hit from retail, so I'll be staying away from the blasters.

Interesting, thanks. I normally try to keep it to low $ and just buy interesting blasters but don't look like a great option after looking at odds. Not sure I want to ship $190 for a hobby box though but resale numbers for individual cards on eBay are strong right now.

Yeah, I was on the fence about a hobby box but used a Topps coupon to bring it down to ~$150 shipped. At that price it seemed like a worthwhile gamble on the exclusive auto rumors being true. And if not, it might still be a cool collector's item if Wemby is the real deal.

The Wemby autos are redemptions, there are some on eBay. I would open instead of sit on it.

I don't know, people's imaginations drive up the price of those unopened boxes.
I've been collecting them for the last few years instead of cards...

1/21/22...

2021 - $40

2020 - $55

2019 - $70

2018 - $110

2017 - $310
Current prices to buy these now, 6 months later, 7/19/22...

2021 - $45

2020 - $70

2019 - $65

2018 - $70

2017 - $320

I'm thinking of adding a couple 2018's at that price and maybe Allen or Lamar could drive it up like Mahomes with the 2017s. What do you think?

Anyone considering taking a trip to The National next weekend in AC? Never been but was thinking about taking a trip since it's not too far from me.
Updated 6/9/23...

2021 - $35 (doh!)

2020 - $60 (doh!)

2019 - $50 (doh!)

2018 - $100

2017 - $250 (doh!)

I need to run the inventory numbers, maybe I'll just start cracking a few of these open. :kicksrock:

They do, but the market knows there is an expiration date on the best card at this moment. Idk if there are other redemptions in the set.

I'd take the view that A LOT more product is going to come out with Wemby in it over the coming year. Seems the Bowman Chrome stuff is very hyped because it is the first one he appears in, but that hype will move onto Prizm, Flawless, and etc by this time next year.

There are some cool players to chase though, particularly with the inclusion of women players like Clark and Boston

this does have the making of being a iconic issue. They are beating Panini to the punch on the college players, only need a couple others to hit it big. The addition of the women stars like Clark certainly helps. Panini can release Wemby cards, just no autos.

This will be good for the hobby. Panini has been trash, the QC has been terrible not to mention their redemptions taking years and years to fill.
Fanatics will be able to promote and release some cool products that haven't been around for awhile.

Panini has had exclusive NBA/NFL licensing rights for over a decade, but now that Topps/Fanatics has won them back, Panini claims these exclusive rights constitute an illegal monopoly? I was hoping that Fanatics would eventually buy out Panini so they could continue producing popular sets like Prizm, but it seems like Panini's plan is to go down swinging.

Was recently announced that Lebron has become a Fanatics exclusive athlete as well. I was hoping he'd remain at Upper Deck so his cards would stop being printed after retirement - now you can pencil him in for every product til the end of time. :kicksrock:

There is a Topps Now card of him and Mookie Betts that was made on Sunday.

I will be so happy to see this Panini go away. They have just phoned it in with their products and have been just letting the presses roll. That being said, I just left a Target and the sheer amount of retail stuff they had was astounding. I will be watching it closely because the minute it goes to clearance, I will be a buyer..

If anyone wants a hex on an NFL Quarterback, let me know!

Built a nice Trey Lance stack up going into last season, just set all the cards on fire this year.
This offseason, I built up some nice stacks of Joe Burrow and Trevor Lawrence rookies. Currently on a big downturn in their card market value.

Just let me know!

! :tfp:

Stay away from CJ Stroud at all costs. He's a terrible investment.

Well, at least Mosaic is the only chrome type card he will have this year, allegedly. Not sure what Fanatics can/will do with Optic/Select/Prizem, but yeah. I hear ya loud and clear LOL.

"Investing" in QBs is a minefield. The pool of young potential stars is so tiny that there's very little chance of a player truly flying under the radar. And so much success is baked into early prices that a player's market almost inevitably craters unless they're Mahomes 2.0. I guess prospect prices in most sports follow a similar trajectory, but QBs' are some of the most egregious IMO.

For sure. Like Purdy for instance. I was waiting for his market to cool. Not happening haha. But Burrow and Lawrence are now ice cold, comparative to just over the summer.

Fun times!

Not a trading card question but hoping someone might be able to offer some advice.
I have a couple of signed NFL jerseys that I'd like to display in frames. Is this something a non-crafty person could achieve a nice DIY result?

Yep. Google/Youtube is your friend. I haven't checked but sure there are thousands of tutorials showing you how.

Opened 3 blasters and 3 megas of Mosaic Football yesterday.

Hit on a Genesis Mike Alstott (yay)

But the bigger hit I got was a Joe Burrow Micro Mosaic. Trying to determine the true rarity of this card. They seem to be ultra rare....

This popped w PSA yesterday. POP 1 PSA 10 and its the only Micro Mosaic currently graded at all. These are going $350-500 raw, not sure what the value is as a Gem. But I'm definitely gonna find out.

$15.,95 a pack--five cards a pack. The best card I got was a .75 Josh Allen insert.

Are card shops even around anymore?

I actively sought out and took my kid to a card shop on Saturday. It was the first time I've been in a card shop in ~25 years. I used to be massively into the hobby in the 90's (great timing, I know). My son has started showing an interest. We got a few boxes off the internet, and on Saturday, I bought him a Joe Burrow rookie, and a box of Score football packs. I also got myself an Upper Deck hockey box. I don't know what to call the box - when I was a kid, there were wax boxes of 36 packs of cards. Now there's blaster boxes, booster boxes, collector boxes, and probably 30 different kinds I didn't list. I can't keep them straight. It takes forever to try and look a card up. The really good ones probably don't even have a price because they're some odd numbered hyper holo ruby diamond thing that has never sold in the open market.

Long story short - The trading card hobby is super confusing. I've spent over $200 thus far on packs for my kid, and honestly, I don't think he's pulled anything worth more than $10-$15 tops, and most cards are $1 or so. It's hard to get excited when you spend $40 for a box of 6 packs of cards.

I think, honestly, if he stays in it, I'm going to start encouraging him to buy single cards vs. packs. Find a guy you like on a cool card and just buy it. I think ultimately that's the way to go unless you have thousands of dollars to spend on packs hoping to hit the lotto.

I'm certainly open to suggestions/tips, but I can't figure out how this is anywhere near as fun as it was when the cards were worthless, but at least you had a chance of actually getting something you wanted in a pack.

Buying singles is 1000% the way to go. The price of sealed boxes is completely out of whack with the expected value of their contents. It's still fun to gamble every once in a while, but you're MUCH better off just buying the cards you want.

Yeah and to piggy back off of this, if you REALLY want value, grading cards is where its at. Sometimes these $10/15 cards turn quickly into a $50/75/200 card depending on the player/sport/time of year. If you are interested in grading I would watch a bunch of youtube stuff to see what you need to look for and possible supplies like lights/magnifying glasses, camera lens cloths to "clean up" the cards.

But yes, sealed wax while fun (and its fun when you pull something great) is basically either gambling or just paying for your own entertainment.

Funny you should mention grading - That's one thing I noticed. Grading adds a massive premium. I have a box of my old stuff from when I was a kid - I won't send any of the junk wax except maybe some '99 UD Griffey's, but I also have a bunch of good stuff from the early 80's, 70's and some older that I will likely send to get graded. I have a Ripken rookie that I feel has to be mint. It's flawless. I've never touched it with my own hands.

I need to see how you even go about sending the cards off to be graded and figure out how much it's going to cost. I could send anywhere between ~10 and ~40 cards depending on the price.

I do Hockey, mostly epacks.
Wow - I just googled this....This is a thing? So you just virtually open packs and then if you want the physical card, they'll send it to you?

I have REALLY mixed feelings about this. It just feels like the first step to overproduction of cards.

Don't get your hopes up on getting any 9-10 PSAs. Receiving one of those grades on a pre 90s card is like winning the lotto. Even if you think it's perfect it's probably in the 6-8 range. You really have to analyze the surface which is something we rarely did back in the day and the corners have to be razor sharp and perfectly centered. Also I think PSA really tries to population control the higher grades nowadays. You can get a feel for it in this video which was six years ago and I hear their standards have gotten even more strict: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Pc6UmhNM2oo

Before spending money on submissions, I'd research various PSA card grades on Ebay and see what they sold at. Look at them thoroughly and if your cards pass the cost/benefit analysis, then ship them off. Just temper your expectations on grading.

I feel this. The guy said he was opening brand new boxes though, so modern cards are much easier to get PSA 10's on, despite Panini's garbage QC

Cosign on the modern cards. I was speaking to Nick saying:
"I also have a bunch of good stuff from the early 80's, 70's and some older that I will likely send to get graded. I have a Ripken rookie that I feel has to be mint. It's flawless. I've never touched it with my own hands."

They have been going this since McDavid's Young gun. I just started about a year ago. They also hooked up with psa so you never have to touch a card and get it graded straight from the factory. Pretty cool stuff.

Also, they won't send Base card but you can combine multiple Base cards into a rainbow card and have that sent to you or try to sell it on comc.

I haven't purchased an unopened card pack in nearly 30 years. I have bought a few cards here and there of players I like, but I'm not an huge card collector or anything.

But this reminded me of one of my best buys. I was about 17-18 years old, and in a card and comic shop that has long since closed down. The owner of the shop was a little bit of a greaseball, but he was the only game in town, so people put up with him. One day when I was in the shop, he was selling individual packs of 1983 Topps baseball for $5/ea. So I bought one, just hoping to get lucky, or at least get a player that I knew. I payed my money and opened the pack right at the counter. I ended up pulling the Tony Gwynn rookie card. The owner of the shop was visibly pissed off. I got the feeling that he had opened a few himself before giving up. I still have the card. Honestly, I don't know how much it's worth, if anything at all.

Second best part of the story ... my buddy ate the gum on a dare ... after it had been sitting in that pack for ten years. He didn't die.

I do Hockey, mostly epacks.
Question for you - I signed up for a free account and have been opening just my free stuff so far...I've also done a couple meaningless trades just for fun. Do you ever get anything good from the free 3 cards a day or are they just always commons?
