anyone here into fishing? (3 Viewers)

I’ve posted on my annual Alaska fishing trip a few times in this thread. This year we decided to change it up and fish the Columbia River in OR. We will be staying in Astoria. There’s 10 of us and we have a huge 7 bedroom house booked a couple blocks from downtown.

We have a King day, a Rockfish day, a Tuna day, and another King day planned, with crabbing mixed in too. We will be there in mid -August.

Anyone do this here before? Any advice?

We are vacationing in Key Largo in late June and I want to get out and do some fishing with the kid and my dad.  I was initially thinking about trying to rent a boat for the week, but honestly, the combination of still having to bring/buy rods and tackle and then navigate an area I'm not familiar with sounded like too much trouble.

Now I'm leaning towards doing a charter or two while we're down there.  That way I've got "hired help" and somebody with equipment and bait.  Does anybody have any recommendations for a decent charter captain/boat for some fishing around Key Largo?  Not looking to go way off-shore for big stuff.  Really in-shore or just a little ways out.  Stuff a seasoned 7 year-old can bring up.

Dream Catchers they are very good they sure put us on the fish. They are in Key West but I'm pretty sure they would meet you at Key Largo. They have modern very nice boats . Highly recommend them.

You don't have to go out far to catch the big ones . Land was always in site just tell them you want to fish inshore. I caught a huge Tarpon the last time we went.

Thanks! I just sent them a note to see if they can meet in Key Largo and to get some rates.  Tarpon is on my "fishing bucket list," so maybe I can check one off...

Do yourself a favor someday and visit Cedar Key. You get the same vibe but on a smaller and cheaper scale. Just as friendly and great for the kids and pets too.

Totally forgot about this thread... I've fallen in love with the Adirondacks. We have a now yearly tradition of going to Star Lake for a Father's Day Week of fishing. So far we've done Star Lake, Cranberry, and Saranac. The smallies up there are phenomenal.

We're heading back up this week to hit Champlain; namely the Chazy River area. Anyone ever been?

Heading to Wisconsin this week for my annual river trip. Going to be fishing for smallies, muskie, sturgeon, and whatever else happens to come along.

Will get there Thursday and fish from about 2:00 - 7:00. All day float on Friday and then will fish all day Saturday.

The goal this trip is to try and get a muskie on one of my son's corbinatorbaitcompany lures. Specifically this large spinnerbait and this bucktail. We need some good pics for his social media accounts of some fish from up north.

Anyway, we will eat like kings and catch fish and drink some cold ones. :banned:

Any snook that far north?
20 years ago very rare but they have made it that far North now. Hasn't really gotten cold in years. So the water is warmer more habital for snook.

Champlain was a fantastic experience. I had never fished offshore for smallies, so it was a big learning curve. We did a lot of homework heading into the trip and it paid off. We were able to get a pretty good pattern down; smallies were hanging 10-15' deep on offshore humps. The more rocks the better the fishing. Ned rigs and drop shots were money in the bank. We caught a bunch of 4 pounders with 4-7 being the biggest. Even got a bonus fresh water drum.

Those are some nice fish. God, they are so fun to catch.

My son has been using Ned rigs here in KC. There is a lake about an hour away that has smallies and he kills it every time he goes there.

My favorite fish to chase. If it weren't for the winters, I'd be seriously considering selling the house and moving to upstate NY.

Start chasing muskie. I'm probably moving to Wisconsin in two years just for that alone. The smallies will be the side dish and a nice one at that.

Gonna post this cause it had me laughing. Plus I'm an old idiot who spent $40 bucks on the app

Been fishing quite a bit over the last 2 months, managed a 26" spec(speckled sea trout) from the surf as my best fish during this timeframe.

The most fun though was hooking into a 3 foot alligator with my kids watching. I got it within 15 feet of shore before it went on a run and straightened out my hook. I was just fishing for bass/perch and was not using the gear to land it.

Saw that. What a story and the balls on those guys. Shocked they didn't get their asses kicked right at the weigh-in.
Yeah, that was wild.

There are three huge cheating scandals going on right now in poker, chess, and fishing. This is the only one where the cheating is just blatantly provable. So crazy those guys got out of there in one piece. I have some buddies and my wife's cousin who do these sorts of fishing tournaments and I know it's very serious business to the competitors.

On this fishing cheating thing, really dumb question probably but I noticed the organizer had to cut the fishes open to find the weights and the added filets. Being completely unfamiliar with fishing, two questions:

1. How do they get the weights into the fish after catching it? I assume they just stuff the weights and filets down the fish's mouth but those weights seem kinda large.
2. How would they execute this sort of cheating? Is there nobody there watching them as they catch fish?

1. Correct. They wrapped the lead balls in fish fillets and shoved them down their gullets. Two pounds in each fish.
2. There is a boat inspection beforehand, but in this tournament there are no officials in the fishermen's boats during competition. This tournament was on Lake Erie; not sure if they were confined to a particular location, but regardless it's an immense area to cover with spotters.

So, the Corbinator Bait Company is still doing well. We were up at my brothers at Thanksgiving and my boys got to fish on Lake Michigan with my nephew.

He is also an entrepreneur - he fishes a lot also and launched a YouTube channel. While we were there he filmed a couple of segments with my boys.

Here is a link to one of the outings. There are also other videos in that series that have my boys on there. The one in that link is my older son. There is another video previous to that with The Corbinator in it. Anyway, take a look - my nephew does a great job with this.

I have a hunch he and Corbin will be in business together since they are like two peas in a pod. Enjoy.

Was on Lake Monroe today and saw this.

At first I thought I was seeing things, but found out they are called fog bows

Still fishing a fair bit, i have been mostly catching smaller fish although i did land a monster sheepshead. My fishing buddies have landed some nice speckled trout(specs) and red drum(redfish)though. Wintertime is when the trophy spec's are in the brackish lake that i fish. Hopefully i will get out a few times to target them.

I dislike being out on the water when it is foggy, one time i had my wife out the boat and we got turned around in the fog and found ourselves in the shallows amongst a few wade fishermen. Thankfully i was only going idle speed but i bet i scared them.

Limited out on some speck today. Man I love it when that happens.
From what I remember about sex it's almost as good.

When I post that I catch specs it is a completely different fish from what you are showing.
I will post a picture shortly.

Speckled trout in some places. In Florida we call them Seatrout or if their big enough Gator trout.

In most places what we call specks or speckled perch in Florida are called crappie.

There are some really nice crappie there

Went ice fishing last weekend and caught some ungodly sized crappies for our state (I guess other regions call them Specks). Adding images with a beer can and 5 gal bucket for perspective.

Nice crappies for sure. Jigging rod or tipups?
