Are you a Costco member? What do you buy for your household? (1 Viewer)

Really?  I don't feel like we spend a crazy amount. A little high but not crazy. Everything goes on the card

Gas is 4% good 3℅ etc
Huh thought it was 4% gas and 2% everything else at Costco and 1% everywhere else. at a flat 2% that's 40k spend a year for 800 refund right?

4 for gas

3 for restaurant and travel

2 for Costco

1 for everything else.

But if you include vacations and such 40 may be close. But I also pay all my bills except my mortgage on that card.

Phone/cable/utilities/tolls

I could see it once you include vacations, which I wasn't in my initial thoughts. Of course we don't take many due to kids activities and such.

Over here in the world we call reality, Costco is substantially cheaper on meat/produce and beans/rice, which is a large majority of what my family eats. And when they do have another product I want to buy, it's usually medium-high quality, and a very good price. The one thing you state as a benefit isn't at all, since Costco actually is remarkably inconvenient for one stop shopping. Costco carries less than 10% of the items that a normal grocery store does, averaging about 4000 skus per store. Whole foods, as you're probably aware, carries between 40-49k skus per store. Costco is awesome for staples. If you want some fresh thyme, some tomatillo salsa, or ginger root you're not going to be able to get it there.

If I run to a normal grocery store like the WF they are putting in down the street from my house, I make one stop and I'm done. If I go to Costco, I usually need to stop elsewhere on the way home to get everything I need. But I like savings the moneys, so I do it.

I don't shop at Costco for the things that I'm very particular about, mostly because you'll rarely find high end stuff there. I'm a bit of a cooking nerd, so my knives, my espresso machine, my pots and pans all came from elsewhere.  But for things I'm not particular about, and I just want a good price on a quality item that will last for a long time (and if it doesn't, you walk it back in and they give you your money back no questions asked), I love Costco.

Have you ever shopped at a Costco? It seems like you don't understand it very well.
This could be his ####### life motto.

Yeah. I have like 3 big months.  But it's usually like 40 bucks.  Gas is big but I also use it for my kids daycare etc.  This for softball we traveled so that added up

There is now a Costco about 1 mile from my house. The parking lot is enormous, so getting in and out of there is a breeze. I now go to Costco frequently, but only to buy things we know are a great deal.

Twice in the past week I have bought a single item there. And the other day I bought three items (produce) for a total of under $10.

My membership is up in February. I think I went maybe 3-4 times. Need to go again to see if it's worth renewing. Fairly close by and yet not that convenient of a distance and the swarms of people are a big turn off. Also have a Sam's membership and don't go there as much anymore as I used to but I do take advantage of their 5% cash back credit card for gas at any gas station.

Only place I will buy meat from, but I tend to run there alone because the wife and I will drop 500 easy buying nonsense.

It's roughly  $3000.  There is a chart on their website that breaks it down. If I wasn't on my phone I would link to it.

If you have little kids, the Honest Tea juice boxes are :moneybag:

35 calories, pretty low on sugar, kids love them, they taste good, $10 for 40 of them.

You walk into Costco with the wife and no plan, you're leaving with a huge bill. That's their plan and we've become numb to it.

I've been following my two step plan above and have cut Costco trips from the $400 range to $200 range.

Honestly, I still can't figure out what we were buying and haven't noticed a difference except a smaller Costco bill.

Welcome to Costco as we trick you into thinking you are saving money on that 5 lb bag of Doritos nobody should buy. After buying 200 lbs of processed poop make sure and load that SUV designed to pack 8 people in but you managed to fill it in only 4 with your family, toss that 200 lb load of crap into the back, tie the kids to the roof and speed down the highway to that 1800 sq ft 4bedroom track home mansion with an attached two car garage that doubles as your personal pantry that looks more like the one in the Shining with 10 lb cans of peaches in syrup and supersize double packs of squeezable ketchup.

Oh damn, now I'm really jealous of you Costco folk. Though, this quarter, the Discover 5% (really 10%) back at Wholesale will make up a chunk of that $250 I'm losing. Though, I guess Costco customers can still use their Discover to buy Costco gift cards online.

Random question: Do any of you that have both a Sam's and a Costco live in a city/town around 70K or smaller (and not close to or part of a larger metro area)? Wondering what the chances are that Costco would ever try to move in here.

I'm thinking maybe this thread isn't for you.

The meat at the BJ's I go to is fantastic too.

Kind of surprising if you think about. How/why do these big box, discount stores have better meats than many of the grocery stores?

wegmans is pretty good too with meat/seafood

definitely not cheap though

Recently bought an entertainment center there which is really nice. Solid wood, painted with a mild antique finish, for $500. Got a Broyhill end table with a built in power port for $150. Also got a floor lamp for maybe $60. All of it seems solidly built and was wife approved. Have a treadmill on the way to my home (shipped yesterday).  This is after I ordered one a few weeks ago, then two days before delivery called to cancel that order because I liked this other one better. It was easy peasy. That isn't even taking into account all the food and clothes I have gotten there. As people say, the meat is often a great bargain for high quality - even my FIL who was a butcher by trade throughout his life agrees on that, and big stores put his corner shop out of business.

I have membership to both Costco and Sams Club.  I find myself going to Sams Club more but mostly because it is closer to me.  There are certain things I can find only at one store or the other.  Very similar in my opinion.

Love Costco - the one thing I try to get my wife to do that I think would make it better is to meal plan ahead of time.  She's more the type to know what she needs for certain dishes and sometimes we will end up tossing a few things that expire - like a large tub of cottage cheese or Geeek yogurt.  That's an us problem though - for a family of 6 we definitely get our money's worth.

I always buy that tub of cottage cheese but rarely finish it before it goes bad.  Going there today..never know what I will come home with.

Tried a Costco-made chili last night. It was in the same refrigerator section as the other Costco-made foods like the Chicken Pot Pie and Chicken Noodle soup. It was delicious, obviously not in the same ballpark as the Judge Smails recipe, but for a pre-made recipe it was great.

Lol I just tried the same chili for the first time yesterday. Put it on a plate of nachos. Very good

I've done the math with some of the bulk items like sour cream, cottage cheese, parm cheese that as long as you finish say 3/4 of it, you're still coming out ahead of regular price at the supermarket.   The things that don't go bad quickly like olives, you make a killing on.

Something that I enjoy a little too much is their 4 bean salad in the glass jars by the olives.   I can polish one of those off in a sitting.

Just got back.

Coffee, blueberries, Fish oil, Muscle Milk Protein powder, Frozen salmon, parmesan cheese, avocados, case of water, 2 bottles of wine, case of beer, Rotisserie chicken,

Pretty small order today.

So what was the bill for that minus the wine as that varies?

Just grilled a 4 pack of NY Strips and they were really nice

I have also read in the Prime Rib thread that their PM's are a good buy too...

Really good Choice grade stuff: Ribeyes, Tri-tips, brisket... read somewhere a while back about how they optimized their supply chain to get meat & fish to the stores faster, so it's fresher in the store and lasts longer after you take it home.
