Tri-tips sadly are a regional thing...I can't get them at my location anymore. Butcher said he keeps trying but they keep telling him no.Really good Choice grade stuff: Ribeyes, Tri-tips, brisket... read somewhere a while back about how they optimized their supply chain to get meat & fish to the stores faster, so it's fresher in the store and lasts longer after you take it home.
I noticed a couple of times I went during the holidays that they were selling fresh seafood. Is this common throughout the year or was it just a holiday thing? Or is this just a regional thing? I am in a coastal state.Bruce Dickinson said:read somewhere a while back about how they optimized their supply chain to get meat & fish to the stores faster
Might vary by region. At my local one (I'm as inland as you can get) has a "Seafood Road Show" 5-6 times a year where there's a wide variety of fresh seafood available. Otherwise it's mainly fresh salmon, trout, and tilapia fillets in one cooler aisle, with IQF fish and seafood available year round in the frozen section.I noticed a couple of times I went during the holidays that they were selling fresh seafood. Oh yeah, I did get a pound of scallops for I believe $15.99 lb. Cooked up mighty nice on the Weber.
Love my Weber Kettle. That along with my Weber Smoky Mountain make for a great combination.Might vary by region. Mmmm, scallops on the Weber. I recently retired an old Kenmore gas grill and went back to the old fashioned Weber Kettle and charcoal. Don't trust myself to be the lead on cooking seafood that expensive (I can be trusted with high-quality beef and poultry, have had success grilling salmon on cedar planks or directly on the grates), but I endorse the idea and recommend it.
Nothing to add here other than the completely non-controversial statement that brisket is delicious and does a wonderful job bringing people together.Love my Weber Kettle. That along with my Weber Smoky Mountain make for a great combination.
Wish My Costco would sell Packer Briskets. All they sell are the flats @ $4.69lb. I have to get my Brisket from the Chef Store which is owned by US Foods.
I always purchase this there too. $4.99 for a 3lb tub that would run you $5 for a 1lb at the grocery store.Da Guru said:I always buy that tub of cottage cheese but rarely finish it before it goes bad. Going there today..never know what I will come home with.
$165?Da Guru said:Just got back.
Coffee, blueberries, Fish oil, Muscle Milk Protein powder, Frozen salmon, parmesan cheese, avocados, case of water, 2 bottles of wine, case of beer, Rotisserie chicken,
Pretty small order today.
I thought you xrank better wineDa Guru said:131.00 total. The wine was 10.00 a bottle.
Well done sir. That's a swap a lot of people ought to make. I can't speak to your old Kenmore, but I see so many backyards sporting a $200 gas grill in terrible shape (of course it is, it wasn't made to hold up past one summer) that won't get hot enough. They'd be better off with the Kettle they probably put on Craigslist (that I probably bought) the day they brought that POS gas grill home from Lowe's. Not talking about nice gas grills. Just the POS $150-200 jobs. A Kettle will run circles around those things for decades.Might vary by region. I saw whole briskets at my local store just the other day.Wish My Costco would sell Packer Briskets.
Wow. Time to smoke a brisket, I guess.proninja said:Prime grade.

It is absolutely the best deal going on car rentals. I didn't know about the ability to cancel and re-rent at lower prices though. That's gold.Yet another plug for renting cars through Costco, and to keep checking on it as the rental date approaches. Just had a larger class of car drop over 50% from a week ago. Canceling the old rental and changing to the new deal was really easy on the Costco Travel website, no upfront costs or change fees. Can cancel almost up to the last minute, too.
The kitchen is going to be so nice in our new house. And keeping it Costco-related, not only are we going to have a ton of refrigerator and freezer space, but also a pantry with 3x the storage of our current one.proninja said:*drools*
We have a 20 cubic foot upright freezer in the garage and it is packed to the gills. Need to eat food out of it before I can pack any more food in it. The brisket has been around for a while though. I made them all summer.
Learned it from someone else in this thread. It is absolutely the best deal going on car rentals. I didn't know about the ability to cancel and re-rent at lower prices though. That's gold.
Here we go. Thanks again, @Wooderson !I book as soon as I think I might need a car for a trip. Then a check back about once a week to try to better the price. Its very easy to book and cancel your previous booking.
Mine is hit or miss and often I have to ask one of the guys in the back.I saw whole briskets at my local store just the other day.Wish My Costco would sell Packer Briskets.
Do you pick up the car at Costco or at an rental agency?Learned it from someone else in this thread.
Good question. At the rental agency. Make the booking through Costco Travel, take the paperwork to the rental agency as if you booked with them directly. They have relationships with Alamo, Avis, Budget, and Enterprise. At the site you enter when and where you want the rental, and Costco gets quotes from those four agencies; real easy to make apples-to-apples comparisons on the desktop version.Do you pick up the car at Costco or at an rental agency?
My girls love those as snacks. This time of year, big bags of Cara Cara oranges![]()
Does that take away the possibility of the Avis, etc offering an upgrade for $5 a day since the deal is actually through Costco?Good question. At the rental agency. For the rental I referenced earlier, I'll pick up the car as if I booked directly with Alamo for one of their airport locations.
Good question. I do recall getting the suggestive upsell pitch at the Avis and Alamo rental counters, but I tuned them out and didn't really hear the numbers.Does that take away the possibility of the Avis, etc offering an upgrade for $5 a day since the deal is actually through Costco?
I rent 3 or 4 times a year and most of the time they offer me upgrades much cheaper than what I could have had at the reservation.
I've never used Scan & Go either, but if you have the Plus membership at Sam's, you can get in at 7AM when it's usually a ghost town. And I don't think it's usually all that busy for the next couple of hours after that (leading up to the 10AM general opening). It's $100, but you get the 2% cash back (and they guarantee that if you don't spend enough to justify the extra $55, they'll refund you the difference). I'm sure Costco has something similar. We have memberships with both Sam's Club and Costco. I know Sam's Club just came out with their "Scan & Go" mobile app where you can the bar code of all of your items into your phone as you shop, and then you can pay via the app as well and skip the checkout line! But I keep forgetting to use it every time we go there.![]()
Does Costco have a similar app? That's really my only complaint about both places is the long checkout lines on the weekends.
I have a 3-day car rental over next weekend. When I booked the rental about 6 weeks ago, an intermediate car was $110 and intermediate SUV was $238.I book as soon as I think I might need a car for a trip. Then a check back about once a week to try to better the price. Its very easy to book and cancel your previous booking.
I have but TrueCar and the other site that was out there had much better prices than what I could get through Costco. It was about 3 years ago though YMMV.Anyone use their car buying service? How does it work? Worthwhile?
Pretty much all of my clothes come from Sam's. Obviously, I'm no fashionista. I could write a yearly review of all the little yearly differences in the regular 5-pocket pants (the $14 jobs). I buy a few pair every year and they are consistently great work britches. Like these.Regular purchases that rarely go wasted and are pretty much at an excellent price:
Rotisserie chicken ($5)
1.5L bottles of Bullett rye bourbon ($35)
1L bottles of Antica vermouth ($25)
Bread
Beer
Wine
Ground beef
Chicken thighs $1.29/lb
Kids clothes, particularly pajamas
Butter
Chobani
3lb bags of coffee ($15/bag)
Beef hot dogs
Batteries for kids toys
Chicken tenders
Peanut butter
Grey Poupon
Havarti cheese
Parmesan cheese
Toilet paper
Paper towels
Tide detergent
Dishwasher pods
Chicken Masala (it's awesome)
Green chile verde
Tzatziki
Hummus
Only thing I've been consistently unhappy with is clothing for me. Rarely works out. Last two trips were $500+ but I'm ok with that. Great if you go to Hawaii too!
I don't think it's much to get excited about. You enter your info, and get a referral to 3 or 4 local dealers. As expected, they all start hounding you within minutes. They all claim you're getting a great "Costco deal" but in my one experience it was no better than what I got on my own from a different dealer.Anyone use their car buying service? How does it work? Worthwhile?
I upgraded a Costco rental last week at Avis in Denver. I had a great rate for a full size sedan, upgraded to a Mercedes SUV for $25 per day more. It was well worth it due to circumstances of my trip.Good question. I do recall getting the suggestive upsell pitch at the Avis and Alamo rental counters, but I tuned them out and didn't really hear the numbers.
I have rentals booked in February and March. I'm going to be a more active listener and test this.
Costco Travel is legit. When we were cruise shopping they gave the biggest "ship credits" of anyone we could find by a large margin.I never even thought about buying furniture at Costco until reading about it in this thread. Bought a couch and recliner today and feel like we got a great deal. My gf is an internet savant and they were 100s of dollars more anywhere else (and given rave reviews).
I think the lesson learned is to check Costco first before any quasi-major purchase. Never thought of renting a car there, either.

Did ok with a deal. Was told it is 1500 below Factory invoice. It put a final price just below the average TrueCar showed. They hounded the wife and tried to tell upgrade the model by saying they did not have the lower model on their lot. I then got online and hit the dealer up for the one on their lot we wanted. Wife showed up at the dealership and lit them up because the first salesman told her they did not have one. And it was in the showroom in front of his office. We got a few extras from them.Anyone use their car buying service? How does it work? Worthwhile?
