Article In The Atlantic: Legalizing Sports Gambling Was A Huge Mistake (1 Viewer)

I think we should keep it off the TV and radio. If you can't drop the f bomb or show certain body parts without the FCC up your pooper, then why can you pimp player prop bets?

Well you can drop the f bomb. On cable/sat/streaming. Watch a drama on FX. They have no issues with the F bomb any more. The only place you can't is network TV. So maybe you could limit gambling talk on SNF but not on ESPN.

I’ve sort of come around on this. I’m fine with it being legal, and I do make bets; but Matthew Berry spouting his parlay picks on the SNF pregame just feels so skeezy for some reason. I didn’t feel that way a year or two ago, so not sure if it’s gotten more prevalent or I’m just tired of it

I used to keep track of a bunch of guys picks like him to see how often they hit. Uhhhh, they don't.

Seriously, I can lose my money without their "help".

For the people replying they're tired of the seemingly endless touting and promoting by site and analysts:

Understood. That's the primary reason we have left money on the table not going that route with our content on the Footballguys site.
Dude you are one of the rare good people who have always consistently put your money where your mouth is on stuff like this. I don't know many people who do.

You're kind, GB.

We make plenty of mistakes, but trying to see things long-term has served us well. I have a couple of close friends with gambling addiction problems, and I think that has colored my view on things too.

And of course, putting money into a regular fantasy football home league and getting a payout 4 months later has risks as well. But they seem significantly different from the impulsive challenges with sportsbook betting.

Bottom line, it's complicated. And we don't have any high ground to stand on. I'm just trying to operate this the way that seems best. But it has put us at a pretty significant competitive financial disadvantage compared to our primary competitors.

I was unprepared for the visceral reaction I had to Jon Hamm doing a gambling site (is it BetMGM?) commercial. I just remember feeling like he instantly became 80% less cool. Like the only way he could have lost more aura would have been if he'd have said, "I'm Jon Hamm, and I didn't have a going problem, I had a GROWING problem! See your doctor about FloMax!"

I think fantasy football is definitely a gateway into prop betting. You're already essentially trying to pick which players will score, get "x" amount of yards, be the top performers for the week anyway, if you have strong convictions on a guy, why not throw some $$ on it. For me it was the logical next step from fantasy, instead of just following your players, you can have action on every game!

Thanks. I'm out of touch some there on the celebrity stuff, was there really a strong negative reaction to Hamm for this?

Does Jamie Fox get same?

Others?

Where do you see most of it?

No idea what the larger reaction is. I didn't have that type of reaction with Jamie Fox, or Kevin Hart for that matter, because I guess they've always seemed like "try hard" celebs to me? I admit it's weird. Don Draper going to Las Vegas to see the Rat Pack and hitting the tables would seem completely in character. But there's just something way less cool about betting first to score props over an app. It's an aesthetic thing with me.

I do have to admit that I raised my eyebrow at seeing Lebron do it. It's weird seeing an athlete promote a gambling site. We used clutch our pearls at athletes even knowing people associated with gambling.

Thanks. I can see that.

There's a ton of money to be made by the people doing it so I'm sure we'll continue to see more.

Parlay bets should be illegal. Too stupid for words.
This. The odds are never in your favor. Even with just 2 or 3 teams.

I am stuck in Wisconsin. They claim we have sports gambling. Kind of but not really. The only place you can gamble on sports is on premise at one of the 2 Indian casinos in either Milwaukee or Green Bay. Lots of stories of people driving over the border and parking somewhere in Illinois to place bets.

Parlay bets should be illegal. Too stupid for words.
Nah.
I killed DraftKings last year with player prop parlays. Not I get no promos from them and when I do they are $5 max bet

This should be illegal.

Banning/limiting people for winning should invalidate their license. I get why a Vegas casino might want to limit taking, say, bets above $500,000 or a few million without vetting/insurance/etc but there should be a level tier for all the non-whales where they have to take your action or close up shop. Period.

Also why these are allowed, horse racing betting is allowed, but poker isn't is the biggest BS there ever was or ever will be. Even tho online poker was killed by the bots (RIP)

Clase’s MLB career over because he placed prop bets on himself.

Unbelievable.

Unconfirmed but a strong strong rumor he is done pitching in MLB.

I'm always amazed when people tell me how limited they are on some of the books.

That seems wild. The books let you bet as much as you want when the book is winning. But win too much and the book cranks down. I'm always surprised when people just  at this.

I guess though it's a "what are you going to do?" thing.

What choice does one have? I don’t use that book anymore.
It’s a ****ing racket

Books will limit you/show you the door if you beat them on a price/number. You dont have to win, they know you eventually will.

I can't recall the podcast because it was just a clip, but it was a pro basketball player (Porter from the Nuggets) talking about how easily players can make their friends and family money just by giving insight on daily games. His example was a player nursing an injury that knows they aren't getting their standard playing time that game, bet his unders.

Players are going to figure out the sneaky ways where "no one gets hurt" to get money out of this. They are already talking about it.

Miami Heat’s Rozier, Trail Blazers' Billups arrested in federal gambling probe, sources say

Miami Heat guard Terry Rozier and Portland Trail Blazers head coach Chauncey Billups have been arrested in connection with a federal investigation into sports betting, people familiar with the matter told The Associated Press on Thursday.

The exact charge or charges they face were not immediately known. Two people spoke to the AP about Rozier on condition of anonymity because they couldn’t discuss details of the investigation publicly. One of these people also told the AP of Billups’ arrest.

The NBA had no immediate comment. The league has investigated Rozier previously and still is looking into the actions of former Detroit player Malik Beasley, one of the sources told AP.

Rozier was in uniform as the Heat played the Magic in Orlando Wednesday evening, though he did not play in the game. He was taken into custody in Orlando early Thursday morning. The team didn’t immediately comment on the arrest.

A message was left Rozier's lawyer, Jim Trusty, on Thursday. Trusty previously told ESPN that Rozier was told that an initial investigation determined he did nothing wrong after he met with NBA and FBI officials in 2023, the sports network reported.

FBI Director Kash Patel and other law enforcement officials were expected to provide more information at a news conference Thursday.

The case was brought by the same U.S. attorney’s office in Brooklyn that previously prosecuted ex-NBA player Jontay Porter. The former Toronto Raptors center pleaded guilty to charges that he withdrew early from games, claiming illness or injury, so that those in the know could win big by betting on him to underperform expectations.

When I heard this driving into work this morning, the first thing I thought of was how much easier it would be to “shave” not points, but “stats” in today’s sports/gambling orgy culture.

Listening to these clowns on Sirius all week and the prop bet commentators… it is all they talk about. As an example (and I’m not accusing anyone of anything), the SNF game is the last chance to hit big on the Sunday games. These prop bets are discussed and come to a head during the pre-game telecast. This past week the slam-dunk, can’t miss, lead-pipe lock prop bet was Drake London +/- 70.5 receiving yards… the narrative was, “Are you kidding me? PEOPLE, you’ve got to jump on this one! Have you seen how Penix peppers London with targets this year? The 49ers are banged up. This might be a shoot out or ATL blowout… either way, Drake London will have 100 yards by halftime!”

Problem is… it turned out to be Darnell Moooney’s night (and Kyle Pitts, and Bijan outta the backfield). London w/ 42 yds. Hmm…

So what you are saying is bet the opposite.

Thank you sir.

just based on twitter rumors and comments i think they may have just loosened the rules on college players betting on sports has anyone heard about that take that to the bank bromigos

Yeah, sounds like they can do pro sports in the near future. I think it's a mistake. That FBI presser just commented how once a person has a gambling debt the can be compromised to "pay off" their debts in other ways.

Agree, this wont end well for college sports.

They are going after the key demographic here. Young men who have played sports. Some will have disposable income now. Trouble has a funny way of finding them.

I guess if I was going to expand on my previous comment... insider trading on sports bets is probably even more prevalent and easier to cover than insider trading of stocks. Very easy to "fix" IMO.

I'm just thankful that my "addictions" are tied to things like - fly fishing, playing guitar, hiking, etc." - things like that. The unfortunate souls that are addicted to life-destroying things like drugs, alcohol, gambling... they can have a rough go of it. At least in the case of drug & alcohol addiction it's usually considered "not cool" to keep feeding these people or tempt them to relapse. Gambling addiction on the other hand... there is no escape from the constant targeting and marketing campaigns. It is shameless and quite disgusting.

Yeah even more likely than shaving "points", there have been allegations of baseball players taking pitches in a particular at-bat where there are props like "next pitch strike" or "next batter strikeout" in a game that is already well in hand. If your team is already winning and you're up at bat in the 8th in a 8-3 game, no one is going to look twice at a batter striking out but your buddies texting you in the dugout that they've got five figures on you whiffing wouldn't mind it at all.

Wow

Honestly, if there are player props getting gamed for wagers, I don't really care. I don't see a victim, if anyone tried to bet 200k on some LB tackles under, the books won't take it.

They don't let you bet huge amounts on those bets.

Really? If the prop is Derrick Henry 0.5 TDs... he runs one in, a dirty ref throws a late flag for holding... Ravens lose by 2-3 pts... there are no victims there? :ponder:

If someone has access to 10 accounts, they add up.

If the books want to continue offering these props, they will have to offer only a yes option. Will X get 5+ tackles, and only bet yes, no other options allowed.

- Why is this guy not being indicted?
Age restricted content. Do you mind cut and paste if appropriate.

Odd, it’s just a picture of Clase pitching.

>>Emmanuel Clase, who in 2024 had one of the most dominant seasons by a closer in history, will be banned following a gambling investigation. He led the league in saves 3 straight years and in 2024 posted a 0.61 ERA (667 ERA+) before suspiciously imploding in the postseason.<<

That’s just from last week.

I see the SEC has quietly suspended that head ref from the 10/11 game. For the year. It's funny and pathetic just the same how they gloss over these things. It took TWO weeks, lol, and it's the perfect time to "announce" it.

What blows me away is how anonymous refs continue to be, in all sports. Very little accountability. Of all the people involved in sports, they are the ones with the highest motives (salary difference) and easiest means at their disposal to profit. We have all seen countless, and I mean mind-blowing calls, for decades now. Yet, there's a mere handful of real discipline that takes place and no real attempt at change. Ban a player for life, but dear god, not a ref, never.

If you want proof that things get rigged more than we think -- varying degrees of course -- then the fact that refs have this shield of protection around them is telling.

Where and why is there such little transparency there? Put their names on their backs and let's get answers after games (not a blurb from the league midweek). And let's see records for teams and over/unders and penalty tendencies and overall history of crews. All of it. We know serious gamblers are well aware of the crews, let the public know more.

What is nice about this stats-on-everything revolution or whatever you want to call it, is that these kind of things are more likely to come to light at some point. Hopefully, anyway.

I wonder if this is something an AI prompt can answer. I'd love to see the data as well.

Bears vs Commanders had some rough calls that game and before the game was over Bears twitter was posting all sorts of stats from that officiating crew. Its out there somewhere.

Tim Donaghy on PBD podcast saying this scandal is only at the beginning. He claims someone from the FBI said the NBA wont be able to cover this one up like they did with his case.
