I think we should keep it off the TV and radio. If you can't drop the f bomb or show certain body parts without the FCC up your pooper, then why can you pimp player prop bets?

Well you can drop the f bomb. On cable/sat/streaming. Watch a drama on FX. They have no issues with the F bomb any more. The only place you can't is network TV. So maybe you could limit gambling talk on SNF but not on ESPN.

We make plenty of mistakes, but trying to see things long-term has served us well. I have a couple of close friends with gambling addiction problems, and I think that has colored my view on things too.

And of course, putting money into a regular fantasy football home league and getting a payout 4 months later has risks as well. But they seem significantly different from the impulsive challenges with sportsbook betting.

Bottom line, it's complicated. And we don't have any high ground to stand on. I'm just trying to operate this the way that seems best. But it has put us at a pretty significant competitive financial disadvantage compared to our primary competitors.

I think fantasy football is definitely a gateway into prop betting. You're already essentially trying to pick which players will score, get "x" amount of yards, be the top performers for the week anyway, if you have strong convictions on a guy, why not throw some $$ on it. For me it was the logical next step from fantasy, instead of just following your players, you can have action on every game!

No idea what the larger reaction is. I didn't have that type of reaction with Jamie Fox, or Kevin Hart for that matter, because I guess they've always seemed like "try hard" celebs to me? I admit it's weird. Don Draper going to Las Vegas to see the Rat Pack and hitting the tables would seem completely in character. But there's just something way less cool about betting first to score props over an app. It's an aesthetic thing with me.

I do have to admit that I raised my eyebrow at seeing Lebron do it. It's weird seeing an athlete promote a gambling site. We used clutch our pearls at athletes even knowing people associated with gambling.

I am stuck in Wisconsin. They claim we have sports gambling. Kind of but not really. The only place you can gamble on sports is on premise at one of the 2 Indian casinos in either Milwaukee or Green Bay. Lots of stories of people driving over the border and parking somewhere in Illinois to place bets.

Books will limit you/show you the door if you beat them on a price/number. You dont have to win, they know you eventually will.

I can't recall the podcast because it was just a clip, but it was a pro basketball player (Porter from the Nuggets) talking about how easily players can make their friends and family money just by giving insight on daily games. His example was a player nursing an injury that knows they aren't getting their standard playing time that game, bet his unders.

Players are going to figure out the sneaky ways where "no one gets hurt" to get money out of this. They are already talking about it.

Miami Heat guard Terry Rozier and Portland Trail Blazers head coach Chauncey Billups have been arrested in connection with a federal investigation into sports betting, people familiar with the matter told The Associated Press on Thursday.

The exact charge or charges they face were not immediately known. Two people spoke to the AP about Rozier on condition of anonymity because they couldn’t discuss details of the investigation publicly. One of these people also told the AP of Billups’ arrest.

The NBA had no immediate comment. The league has investigated Rozier previously and still is looking into the actions of former Detroit player Malik Beasley, one of the sources told AP.

Rozier was in uniform as the Heat played the Magic in Orlando Wednesday evening, though he did not play in the game. He was taken into custody in Orlando early Thursday morning. The team didn’t immediately comment on the arrest.

A message was left Rozier's lawyer, Jim Trusty, on Thursday. Trusty previously told ESPN that Rozier was told that an initial investigation determined he did nothing wrong after he met with NBA and FBI officials in 2023, the sports network reported.

FBI Director Kash Patel and other law enforcement officials were expected to provide more information at a news conference Thursday.

The case was brought by the same U.S. attorney’s office in Brooklyn that previously prosecuted ex-NBA player Jontay Porter. I guess if I was going to expand on my previous comment... insider trading on sports bets is probably even more prevalent and easier to cover than insider trading of stocks. Very easy to "fix" IMO.

I'm just thankful that my "addictions" are tied to things like - fly fishing, playing guitar, hiking, etc." - things like that. The unfortunate souls that are addicted to life-destroying things like drugs, alcohol, gambling... they can have a rough go of it. At least in the case of drug & alcohol addiction it's usually considered "not cool" to keep feeding these people or tempt them to relapse. Gambling addiction on the other hand... there is no escape from the constant targeting and marketing campaigns. It is shameless and quite disgusting.

Yeah even more likely than shaving "points", there have been allegations of baseball players taking pitches in a particular at-bat where there are props like "next pitch strike" or "next batter strikeout" in a game that is already well in hand. If your team is already winning and you're up at bat in the 8th in a 8-3 game, no one is going to look twice at a batter striking out but your buddies texting you in the dugout that they've got five figures on you whiffing wouldn't mind it at all.

I see the SEC has quietly suspended that head ref from the 10/11 game. For the year. It's funny and pathetic just the same how they gloss over these things. It took TWO weeks, lol, and it's the perfect time to "announce" it.

What blows me away is how anonymous refs continue to be, in all sports. Very little accountability. Of all the people involved in sports, they are the ones with the highest motives (salary difference) and easiest means at their disposal to profit. We have all seen countless, and I mean mind-blowing calls, for decades now. Yet, there's a mere handful of real discipline that takes place and no real attempt at change. Ban a player for life, but dear god, not a ref, never.

If you want proof that things get rigged more than we think -- varying degrees of course -- then the fact that refs have this shield of protection around them is telling.

Where and why is there such little transparency there? Put their names on their backs and let's get answers after games (not a blurb from the league midweek). And let's see records for teams and over/unders and penalty tendencies and overall history of crews. All of it. We know serious gamblers are well aware of the crews, let the public know more.

What is nice about this stats-on-everything revolution or whatever you want to call it, is that these kind of things are more likely to come to light at some point. Hopefully, anyway.
