In the end, this is the decision making process that works best for anything that's more important to her than it is to you.It went something like this:Wife had a bunch of names she liked. I told her which ones I hated and we went with the ones I didn't hate.
Sounds good. And you can name the next two Basil and Rosemary. What's the verdict on Sage?I just love how it sounds, the definition, and green is my favorite color. I want to name my kid Sage Francis (Francis is my name), but I'm afraid he'll be destined to be a rapper or back up NFL QB.
j/k...kinda. I always thought Sage was a girl name as well as Francis and can't imagine a boy ever having that name. What's the verdict on Sage?

Francis = boy Frances = girl
we have had the name conversation a couple of times and have one boy and one girl named picked out. He picked the boy middle name (after I vetoed his 1st choice of 'Chaos') to be the same as his middle name and I picked the girl middle name as a combo of both of our mother's middle names. First names we just threw a couple out and both liked the same ones. I wanted something different but not weird and whereas he likes more traditional names.I didn't think about those two. I have only personally known 2 people with that name and they were both girls and both were spelled Francis.j/k...kinda. Is it Madalynn or Madaline pronunciation?Mrs. O and I went through this a month or two ago. It was pretty quick -- someone gave us a baby name book that we never even looked at. We picked a boy name to honor family, but a girl name that she just really liked. Turns out we've got a baby girl on the way -- Madeleine (or "Maddy").Oh and I agree with BF's rules posted earlier and we more or less applied the same. Nice somewhat traditional name but not very common, works well with the last name, and has a sophisticated feel in full but "cutesy" nickname. I think the one place we can be faulted is on spelling, though I'm pretty sure this is the most traditional original (French) spelling. But I'm sure she'll have to explain the spelling a bunch...
Former -- with our spelling I think that's the only pronunciation (theoretically it would even be pronounced more French style (like Mah-de-lane), which would be neither of the above, but I suspect the Americanized version you posted above is how most will do it).Is it Madalynn or Madaline pronunciation?Mrs. O and I went through this a month or two ago. What was the boy's name you had picked out?Madeleine is a good name. I think it is fairly popular these days.Mrs. O and I went through this a month or two ago. For a boy we were going to use my dad's name (John Robert _______). My dad named me after his dad (I'm the 2nd), so we were going to continue the tradition.the moops said:What was the boy's name you had picked out?Madeleine is a good name. I would go with David Grayson. I'm not sure there is a name out there that is free from ridicule.Grayson is a pretty easy name for other kids to make fun of.
Of course but some names are easier targets than others.I'm not sure there is a name out there that is free from ridicule.Grayson is a pretty easy name for other kids to make fun of.

I wouldn't worry about this. I think it is a fine woman's name.I'm a bit concerned that Ellie may not be the best name for an adult
you do realize that, especially in a city like NYC, she will probably have 11 friends named Maddy before she gets out of elementary school, right?Otis said:Mrs. O and I went through this a month or two ago. I suppose "in a city like NYC" she could have 11 friends with just about any name. It is a somewhat common name these days. 60th most common as far as I can tell. But there is also Madison which is the 7th most common name in 2009. Those both will be "Maddy".Add that to the yuppified community that you probably live in and the yuppified schools she will attend, she will have a few more friends named Maddy than peens' kids.I suppose "in a city like NYC" she could have 11 friends with just about any name. I don't understand why you think there would be a higher concentration here?

we had my kid in a gym class with about 17-18 kids total. half boys, half girls. 3 Maddy's. two Madison's, one Madeline.

everybody has an opinion, none of them matter, and in the end all the commentary just winds up pissing new parents off. its your kid, your choice.. do what makes you happy
Well played.Wifey and I want to give our unborn son a "normal" sounding name, but with a unique spelling. So we settled on Styyvyn. Best of both worlds.I'm not.SorryMy youngest kid's name is Steve, hippy.

If you think Ellie is too cutsie for an adult, she could always just use Elle. We have three generations of my oldest sons name...my son, his dad and his grandfather. They each have a specific variation (Don, Donnie and DJ oldest to youngest) and it works fine.My wife has this thing that if anyone we know has a child of the same name, we can't go there. I liked Ella, but one of her friends has a daughter named Ella. We ended up deciding on Ellie for the first name and Paige as the middle name (which happens to be my grandfather's name). I'm a bit concerned that Ellie may not be the best name for an adult (I just think of a child when I think of the name, like Bobby or something), but she can always fall back on her middle name I guess. My wife didn't like any of the common names that are shortened to Ellie like Eleanor, Ellen or Eloise. I wanted my son to have my name, but that was vetoed right off the bat. Of course my first name was a point of confusion when we first started dating as there were 3 people with my name in our house (My dad, Myself and my step brother). No point in adding another one to the family I guess. We were leaning Evan James if we had a boy.
I really hope you do/did not do this.Wifey and I want to give our unborn son a "normal" sounding name, but with a unique spelling. So we settled on Styyvyn. Best of both worlds.
