***RUMOR***

FoxSports reports that OAK is close to signing free agent P Esteban Loaiza to a 3 year/$21 million deal.
does that sound like a Bean move?
No statistical analysis that I can find states that Loaiza is a good buy at 7 mil per.
FWIW, the recent market for free agent signings seems to have settled in around $1.5m-$2m*WARP3.Loaiza's Last Three Years:

2003 - 11.0 WARP3

2004 - 2.5 WARP3

2005 - 5.2 WARP3

Clearly, teams should not pay for past performance. I think OAK understands this better than any other franchise. But, if Beane and Forst's Excel spreadsheet spits out a projection of say 5,4,3 WARP3 for Loaiza over the next three years, that would make it a reasonable deal.

To be clear, I don't like this deal (if it's true) at all. I'm just saying.

Also, I wonder if this helps set the table for a trade of Zito?

According to Eddie Coleman, WFAN's Met guy:Billy Wagner is on his way back to NY; Should be a MET no later than tomorrow

Nice job closing by Minaya. With the Ryan contract I started to worry - then word that Boston was getting involved. Huge acquisition for the Mets.

DAMN! I wish the Cards didn't get rid of him, he was a valuable 1B/3B/OF lefty bat off the bench. He is getting older, though.

Mets sign a white guy!
wow for someone who called me a "racist" for saying I was embarrassed but white guys listening to and ascting like Eminem, you've gotten a bit loose with the mouth Mr. Sensitive. Must be getting a bit drab in Yankee land.

I know that if you hit the SAP button on your tv while watching a Mets game, you can hear it in English!
Brian Giles offered 5-year/$55 million from the Toronto Blue Jays...
Are the Blue Jays renaming themselves "Le Mets?"11 mil per year for an aging OF who, while solid with the Pirates, suffered mightily in Petco? Are they basing Giles' talent on his prime years only? It'd be like the Cardinals trading for Roger Cedeno because he had a few good years in his career. Oh wait, they did at one time.

Sucktastic move by a once respectable organization who's now trying to be like the sucktacular Mets.

Now I wonder who the Cards are gonna get now to fill one of their OF spots.

Let's see, going into the offseason as a Cardinal fan, I thought we had a pretty solid squad that would be fine tuned with a few additions. Now I watch as we lose two great utility guys, will proabbly lose our second baseman and probably lose our left fielder. Plus we lost Walker to retirement. I know Jockitty knows what he is doing, but what are we doing???If Giles signs with Toronto, what are we going to do to protect Pujols?Assuming Sanders signs with KC, we now have Taguchi, Edmonds and ??? as our starting outfield. If Rolen is not healthy what do we do at third or utility? Mabry gone, Nunez gone.Maybe we are saving up for the Burnett sweepstakes, but we need another power bat in the lineup and we definitely need a utility player not to mention a solid lefty out of the pen.I am not liking the way things are developing this off season.

:goodposting: I'm sure Jocketty will pull one of those week-before-spring-training signings that get about as much fanfare as a fart in church, but end up producing solid results.

Or maybe they're targeting John Gall to be one of the OF's this year. Wait a sec, is that hell I see freezing over?

What is KC offering? Aren't they the kings of 2yr/6mil contracts? Are the Cards just not interested in Sanders? You bring up some good points and I have the same questions for the Cards.

Havn't heard anything on the Sanders to KC rumors. First I heard of them, then again, I live a little outside of metro St. Louis, so news is slow to filter down here.As far as the Cards interest goes, I'd guess he's kind of a last resort option for them . He is getting up in years and he's not a great average hitter. If Sanders does go elsewhere, I don't think they'll be hurt.

As a Yankee fan"]Because apparently he thinks that Giles is more harm than good if he signs that contract and he alone will prevent the Jays from ever entering the Boston/New York love duo in the AL East. It's a reach, but New Yorkers seem to do that a lot.

**RUMOR** Cubs have offered the Dodgers Todd Walker for Milton Bradley. Anyone one in LA hear this?
If we lose Grudzelaniek, I would take Todd Walker in a heartbeat. Maybe we can offer them outfielding uber-prospect Rick Ankiel.

As a Yankee fan"]Hes getting up there in years and cant really play CF. Not worth the money IMO
Interesting. You may be right, but Brian Giles is really good.

White Sox Update:According to the Baltimore Sun, Paul Konerko has ruled out the Orioles as a choice. According to WSCR, 670 AM, Paul Konerko should have a decision between the Angels and White Sox within the next 24-72 hours. He is scheduled to meet with the Angels, but both offers appear to be similar in avg per year - the Angels may be willing to go one extra year on Konerko. In addition, the White Sox still may be shopping LHP Damso Marte, and have interest in Mike Myers to replace him. Rumors persist that the White Sox may go after Juan Pierre to play LF/CF.

It isn't that he isn't good. I think if you put him in Yankee Stadium with the short porch, he'd be fantastic. However, he isn't what we need right now. He'd be a quick-fix and a knee-jerk reaction to some of the other teams around NY making moves. It's not the right move for NY.To answer Lumbergh, it's not a "NY thing". You're misreading me. I think you're implying that I want the Jays to sign him because I think it'd be a bad signing and would hamstring them for years. That's not what I'm saying. It's more a case of NOT wanting him on NY than anything. I'm sure if he goes to Toronto he'll put up his usual .300-30-100 and probably beat up on our pitching staff of mostly righties.

No, my issue is that we need a CF...he isn't a CF...simple as that. I'd much rather wait out the year and try to get by with in-house help rather than go out and sign another guy who's going to be approaching 40 by the end of his contract. Same reason I don't want Damon. We have plenty of bats right now. What we need is someone who can track down fly balls in CF and maybe run the bases a little bit. A guy who can bunt would be nice. Basically, a prototype centerfielder. If they can't get one (and they probably can't), you can do worse than Bubba Crosby. I think if he hits .240 with no power and plays excellent defense, we can live with that.

Not all Yankee fans are the same, you know.

Cardinals Update -Reggie Sanders did meet with KC's Allard Baird, but it is unlikely that KC can offer Sanders the multi-year contract it would take to pull him away from St Louis....but there are three other teams that may still have interest (I think it was the Tigers, the Mariners and the Orioles but I am not sure). Now for the good news...I think we are still in the running for Burnett and woul dnot be surprised if we land him and word on the street is that we have a good shot at Jacques Jones. He would be a great addition as another lefty bat with decent speed and moderate pop, but most importantly he is another lefty bat to put in the lineup. In the news I am pretty excited about, we signed free agent minor leaguer Dennis Tankersley who will probably start the year in the minors, but it is a great add to our already strong pitching depth. Not an earth shattering move and he is a righty with decent stuff who finished the year showing promise.

:lmao: @ LumberghThe Yankees need a CF. Giles cannot play CF in Yankee Stadium. Matsui, who would have to move to CF if the Yanks sign Giles, is not the answer there either.

Giles is a very good ballplayer and offensively would probably put up O'Neill type #'s in the Bronx for the next few years. But the team needs to get younger and needs to focus on a defensive CF, IMO.

So far I love the "non-moves" by Brian Cashman. Instead of jumping at big name free agents that we dont need hes being patient and trying to build a younger, less expensive winner. I am estatic about the Yankees future. It seems Cashman is doing things the right way. Crosby in CF is fine cuz he'd probably be one of the better CFers defensively in the AL. Our lineup is fine and could use a guy like Crosby to do the dirty work, move guys over, sacrafice bunt, etc. Get back to what we used to do in the late 90's. We dont need a superstar at every position. I also like the fact they are gonna give an opportunity to Andy Phillips to play 1B. He has the potential to hit 25 HRs but he has a huge uppercut swing so I dont think he'll be great. But they can easily trade for a good 1B during the season at a much cheaper price than just about any other position.I do believe they need serious help in the bullpen and am a bit worried about that. Before the offseason I wouldnt have minded if they let Gordon go but now I think they really need him.
