Same here. I think I use both pretty interchangeably. 
 

But I’ve never said “trunks.”  Is that a regional thing?

my parents, native NYers transplanted to CA, called them trunks- but I think only for boys/men.

Swimsuit in normal conversation, but always "trunks" when talking to my daughters since they think its weird.... "GIRLS, GET YOUR TRUNKS ON!"

Bathing suit seems archaic to me, I usually hear the term swimming suit here in L.A. and I probably use the term swimming trunks more...

Swim suit, trunks, speedo, aquachones, are all acceptable.

I've never referred to it as anything besides bathing suit. 

37 and grew up in Jersey.

Seinfeld has a great bit about "trunks" being an old man term.

Think I usually just say suit. My daughter (11) has a pool in her building & when I am near I’ll call to ask if she put her suit on yet.

I guess swimsuit among the choices. Never trunks. I *think^ people say bathing suit in the Midwest but I’m getting old & senile so not sure.
