It has been reported on Sirrius that Cedric Benson will be the week 1 starter in Chicago. This is big new considering Jone's success in pre season and Benson signing so late. Benson anticipated week 2, but if this report is accurate he must be making quite an impression.

 
I highly doubt it.He will play, but start and get the majority of the carries. :no:

Reported by who? I find this very, VERY hard to believe, even with being one of the people around here who think Benson will take over sooner, rather than later.

I'm sure if it was announced on the radio from a reputable source that its at least on the internet somewhere.
 
I heard it on the 2 minute drill on Sirrius about 30 minutes ago. It was on channel 124 during the John Riggins show. I couldn't believe it either so I listened to the next two minute drill a half hour later and heard it again.

 
I am not a newbie, I have been on this board for years and have subscribed to footballguys every years since charging. I lose my password and username every year. I was just as shocked as everyone, but as a Benson owner I am estatic, because I don't have Jones on my roster. I did think they would play Jones to give him a look to other teams for possible trades.

Exactly, but they did mention a site on the last report that reported it and I missed it. I will listen again. Sirrius is pretty reliable as they have the NFL contract and they talk to players every week.

Again, as a Benson owner I am even baffled. I would think it is reliable, but I have been searching for another source and have not found one. It does not make sense, unless they see something in Benson that is special. We shall see.

Jeff Blake gave Benson the quarterback's headset for the entire game, and Blake listened to the calls on his own helmet receiver so Benson could track the plays.

Maybe the John Riggins show is stirring up a story that doesn't really exist?
 
Doubt they will pass much when he is in the game. They did give him 30 mill and he is perfectly built for the NFL but I would be shocked if he got more snaps than Jones for a few weeks anyway. I am one who really thinks Jones grew up last year and became tough. They need to play him some for sure or trade him, he belongs as a starter in the NFL without doubt now.

Yea...I love Sirius NFL radio. Only have it in my car though
 
For what it's worth:I received an update email from another pay site which said Benson was going to start week 1. This was around 3:15pm eastern.Less than an hour later they retracted the statement, indicating he would play but probably not start.

 
I heard it too. Kind of hard for me to believe, but they said it.Perhaps he gets the start and a few carries, then Jones comes in and takes the bulk of the work?

Maybe Sirius saw the report of him playing in wk1, and are taking it to mean hes starting? Just find this hard to believe, especially since its not on the Bears website

Two interesting things from this post:1) No more doubting the original poster on this...

2) Regarding the start, I would expect that it would go the other way if anything...Jones starting and Benson getting the majority of the work...except I was thinking we were a month away from even that. This is pretty interesting news no doubt. I think if Benson really starts, we'll see him carrying the ball a lot more than Jones (and probably Jones in on obvious passing situations for blocking/receiving out of the backfield)

Two other paysites have had this info since about 3:30. Both of these sites have retracted their posts and have said that their "chicago insider" is now saying that Benson will play/get carries ,but will not start

Take it for what it is worth!

My two cents is that he gets the goal line carries/short yardage work, but Jones is in from the 20-20 and on passing downs.

Buddy, think what you want to think. I have been a member of this site for years, and read the board often. I periodically post, but use it mostly for an information source. I love the site, I am very knowledgable of fantasy football like many people on this site. I posted it because I heard it on Sirrius and figured most would not know. It is 12.99 a month for Sirrius and I usually get accurate information from their NFL stations. I love Sirrius, but agree they may be off on this report.

What's the over/under on how many games Benson plays before getting injured & listed as OUT for 2 or more weeks?

This guy cannot be in football shape and ready to play. 1st off the guy has yet to grasp the NFL game.John Abraham began camp around when Benson did. Abraham will likely only play passing situation downs next weekend. If Benson plays a lot, I don't see how he won't get injured. He's only been hitting in pads for what, a week?

Dont get me wrong....the Redskins should have a good defense again. But, Im not going to be scared of Lavar Arrington anytime soon. Sean Taylor....maybe, but Arrington......NO

Exactly - it was a rumor put out by somebody who didn't know what he was talking about. Thomas Jones is the starting RB for Week 1.
 
Shouldn't be an earth changing shock to any "shark". This is where fantasy meets the NFL, why would the go-nowhere Bears play a journeyman for extended periods when they can start to develop their future?

 
The only information remotely similar to the rumor was a statement made by the chicago tribune that although benson has only been signed by chicago a short period of time, he has already been designated the #2 RB. Not sure if Sirius confused this for the #1 RB or they just aren't very fantasy savvy.

Yeah, the #2 designation was a foregone conclusion, and he will play some on Sunday vs. Washington, just not as a starter, and I'd be surprised if he got more than 3 or 4 carries.
 
I would think it would take longer than a week just for the fact that their rookie QB will get killed if the other rookie misses a blitz pick up.

Good point, and yet another reason why the Bears won't rush Benson onto the field. With Kyle Orton at QB, I don't think the Bears are going to risk many mental errors at other positions, especially when they have Thomas Jones quite capable of getting the job done.

I am starting Domanick Davis, Julius Jones, and Curtis Martin in week one, but I have Benson, Foster, and W. Green on my bench. I was initially excited to hear this news, then this fact dawned on me, hehe. No starting either against Redskins D. However, this still makes me happy because at some point (looking to be sooner rather than later), Benson may crack my starting lineup! :)
 
Last I heard he was going to "participate" in week 1. Im not saying this info is untrue but would be VERY surprised if it holds true.

 
Sept. 11: Jones goes for 16-36-0. Benson's line is 4-38-1.

Sept. 12: Lovie says he liked what he saw yesterday out of the "hard-nosed veteran" Jones, and indicates that it'll take more than that lackluster effort for him to lose the job.

Sept. 13: Jones comes up with a "mysterious" injury while getting out of bed.

Sept. 18: Benson gets his first start, at home vs. Detroit. 24-145-3. Comparisons to Walter Payton begin. Benson and his teammates plan to hit the studio to record a remake of The Super Bowl Shuffle. The Hall of Fame is in sight.
