Best albums of 2013 (1 Viewer)

I like Neko's solo stuff, but it doesn't always do it for me. I much prefer New Pornographers.

The new album is pretty good though, from what I've heard.

I like Snoop Dogg. I like reggae. I was pretty sure that 'Snoop Lion- Reincarnated' was going to be awful though.

I was right. Stay very far away from this.

I know the entire Haim album isn't out yet, but I'm pretty sure I'm going to love it. I don't want to, because it sounds way too polished....but #### it....I have the musical tastes of a 13 year old girl most of the time.

You'll like this one then. "Is This How You Feel?" by The Preatures They're from Sydney. The song is vaguely Haim-ish and has more hooks in 3:39 than some albums I've listened to lately.
You know, I heard a song of theirs for the first time on Wednesday. Had never heard of them before then....not sure if this is the one, I'll have to check it out.

I am a sucker for this stuff.

Was worried about being disappointed by the new J Roddy and the Business album (Released today) but it's pretty awesome. One of the very few new bands out there that are both original and true Rock N Roll at the same time.

Yeah, Ive really been liking it (as well as the bonus track "I Think of You" which I first heard today). Honestly, I won't even compare it to their last album as that is my favorite album, period, of the last decade. I was surprised by this album though as at least to me, overall it has more of a 50's/60's early rock N roll type sound whereas the last album was pretty much pure classic rock with piano up front and center. Less keys on this one as well, all in all.

Either way, loving it and cant wait to see them play some of these live that I havent seen. Just dont take Brave Man's Death out of the setlist like when I saw them this summer!!

I've always thought their sound was the epitome of that 50s gospel, early R&B influence sound. I think that without actually sounding like the Stones, they are the most Stones like band I've ever heard. Their first "unofficial" (self-released) album, "Hail Mega Boys" has snuck up on me to the point where I think I like it as much as the self titled album. It's definitely not as polished but it has some great tracks and a crapload of emotion which is where the strength of the band really comes in. Great lyrics, gospel like emotion and great piano, guitar work and harmonies makes for good listening.

Though never a huge fan, I was always slightly intrigued by Sleigh Bells and their sound. The debut song for their new album is terrible though imo, made even worse by the dreadful music video.

New MGMT leaked
I heard one song the other day, must be their lead single. It was so bad that I nearly turned off the radio. If they didn't have the MGMT name recognition, I would've changed it immediately. I hope the rest of the album is better than that one. Oof.

Spin hated it. Worst New Music

On their third and eponymously titled album, Benjamin Goldwasser and Andrew VanWyngarden don't notice a lot of things, including their lack of hooks or any sort of identity. A confused, confusing album, MGMT treats contemporaneity as if it were an insulin shot. Bits of Flaming Lips here, Animal Collective there. The spare, echo-drenched dub calisthenics of Primal Scream are seemingly a major influence. So are third-tier Madchester acts like — get this — Candy Flip. In other words, MGMT sound like nothing more than two dudes who happen to write songs, which means they sound like everyone and no one.

J Roddy/the band definitely have a lot of influences that are apparent in their music, and gospel is certainly one of them, probably never more apparent than a song they wrote/released in between Essential Tremors and S/T, Jesus Gonna Do His Best. I personally think they're sort of like Led Zeppelin crossed with Jerry Lee Lewis on cocaine, but there's plenty of Stones in their as well. If I heard it on the radio, I'd think the song Sweat Shock on the new album was something off Physical Graffiti.

I like Hail Mega Boys a lot, and actually this new album reminds me much more of HMB than S/T, except better. The rockers are more rocking, and ballads are more mature, and overall its even catchier, which is a word I hate but cant help with this band. As you said, great lyrics, gospel like emotion - especially live - and great piano, which I wish there was more of on Essential Tremors or at least more upfront, and the great harmonies.

You can't have graduated from Wesleyan and be taken seriously by your friends if you write danceable pop music that sort of defines the genre. There can't be stasis here!!!111!!!!

It didn't grab me at first but it's grown on my second and third listens. Arctic Monkeys is a band I've always liked so I gave it the opportunity to grow. I'm not sure this would have been the case if they were some unknowns.
Critical consensus seems to be that this is their best since WPSIATWIN, and album wise I think it is (Pitchfork actually gave it the highest score of any of their albums). Seeing them Sunday for the first time and can't wait.

Current favourite song: Knee Socks

I like the new Monkeys, and once again in spite of myself I like the new Grouplove... great sound IMO

J Roddy's a guy I should like more, but I don't know, I just find him consistently pretty good. I keep feeling like he must have a great, ball-kicking song or two waiting to be unleashed.. but they just aren't there.

Pretty good. Used to Did's probably my favorite track by them. I like the less loud stuff on the new album best, like Black Light.

They're pretty solid, and I'm going to see them at 9:30 Club in November. But I don't love 'em, even though their stuff's right up my alley.

I'm going to call them The Pogues meet Zeppelin making out with the Stones while drinking with Jerry Lee Lewis

The times they are a Stayin "everybody bow your head; because everybody else is dead; and that usually sends the mood south" / "Some men just have plans; and some men just have hands; and some men just have a way with words" / found myself stumblin' in the dark; And it comes to me almost every night And it kisses my lips and it tastes just right; and I ask it to stay but it just goes away

Generic in love "there's two kinds of people in this world and you ain't both of them"

Sally Bangs "sally met a man from old Kentucky; he was rich, she got lucky; he said sally would you be my wife; he changed his will and he gave her his money; they got married and things got funny; that man didn't last a second night"

Mordekai: "and it only feels like marriage when we're having sex"

Don't Break the Needle: "I've been pullin' thread; Doin' all kinds of evil; Know ya hate me baby; But don't break the needle"

Full Growing Man: " And I lost a fight with the future, dear; I want the moment, the moment is here; With rattled bones, and a lighter can; I will shake with bliss and dirty plans But you gotta, ya you gotta gotta grow up sometime"

Used to Did: "Watch your tongue it's on my tongue; It tastes good but it tastes so young; It's a thrill dream It's just a-rock and roll / How bout this? Give us a kiss; I got this gun girl, it don't miss; Too much? That makes it rock and roll

PIgs & Pearls: "And it's not that boy It's not his brother; It's just me got no other; You made a friend rather talk than fight; Open my mouth and I'll shut your mouth"

Brave Man's Death: "I don't want to die in the middle of the night; I want a brave man's death; Spitting gasoline, burning my teeth, getting salt on the fields of my past; and the sun'll come down with a milky white flash; I'll get my brave man's death at last"

Caroline: "And he had a girl named Caroline Pearl; And she was soft and sweet and she was made of salt; But that wasn't her fault and her hands were soft; Like slavery

Reaction to the new Arcade Fire single seems to be mixed, but I like it

I may have finally taken a turn toward teh gay

Drenge's self titled debut album is pretty good. Drenge is a band of two brothers (siblings not black guys) from the English Midlands. It's the now familiar White Keys/Black Stripes guitar and drums lineup but Drenge's music is less obviously indebted to the blues than those bands. The duo setup doesn't allow for much subtlely so they bash out short loud songs with funny slice-of-life lyrics that are sort of reminiscent of Arctic Monkeys. It's a fun little rock n roll record that doesn't lose its way until the last song--the aptly titled ####about.

Nobody else here liked Deafheaven? Not my usual style but you guys should give it a listen, they rock hard.
Been listening to this the past couple of days. Incredible stuff.

It sounds like Sigur Ros, Explosions in the Sky, and Godspeed You! Black Emperor had an orgy and produced a rebellious screaming kid.

Albums I digging after a few listens:

Telekinesis - Dormarion

Terry Malts - Nobody Realizes this is Nowhere

Warm Soda - Someone for You

Small Black - Limits of Desire
