Best Burger In Each State (1 Viewer)

Long shot here but if you're ever in Maui Cool Cats Cafe has an amazing chili cheeseburger.  It's fresh beef from the island topped with sweet maui onions.  It's a must stop for those going to Hawaii.
That sounds amazing. It probably is a long shot but maybe one day and I'll definitely check it out if I make it.

They chose a place outside Abilene for Texas. Uhhh...ok. I'm not doubting its greatness - it may be. But who would even know?

It's exceptionally famous.  They have a helicopter landing pad, so if you need to get out there for a dinner on a Friday night you can take your helicopter, or fly into ACA on your jet and charter one.

I've never had the burger, but don't doubt it's great.

Mlive did a "Top 10 Burgers in Michigan"..  Motz's didn't make the list.. is a "slider" even a real burger??

I've been to #9 and #4 on the Mlive list.. #4 is 2 miles from my work and I have it often for lunch.. It would be my #1 in Michigan of the places I've been

Mlive top 10 burgers in Michigan

I've been to Motz and it was really good, but I agree with the slider comment.  If sliders counted, i would put Hunter House before Motz.

California... just too many and too many weird iterations. The winner in the article:

So "Cali" and in some ways so wrong. I don't want rosemary bread or zucchini on my burgers. Hodad's, Ocean Beach, San Diego makes "normal" burgers that are off the charts as long as you order normal and not one of their monstrousities. Unless you like monstrousity burgers - this is the place for those too.

I'm a little busy atm, but will share my LA and middle of nowhere favorites later. One in LA is a must for the daring. It's a great burger and a better experience.
I’ve eaten at Zuni Cafe, and the food is very good, so I don’t doubt the burger is also good, but it’s the type of place I wouldn’t even consider ordering a burger from.

I didn’t get this burger, but Cool Cats Cafe did have a memorably good burger to the point I scrolled down to see who they listed in Hawaii.

Those Pimento Cheese Fries are the bomb. I like to add some bacon and eat them with ranch.

I love a good chili cheeseburger. I'll have to check it out.
I've usually done them just with sliced jalepenos, so will have to try that one out.

Brooks is only open till around 3 on week days and just takes cash. The closest thing they have to seating is a standup table outdoors. I live in the neighborhood so shoot a PM if you are ever around.

The Indiana choice is a very nice call. Kind of surprising to see that in there. It's been a long time since I worked near there and have been to The Workingman's Friend pretty cool to see that there. My wife and I were just talking about that place recently and talking about going but haven't made it there yet.

They have a number of really good burgers on their menu.  Milkshakes are amazing too.  Just a cool vibe eating there with the fresh ocean breeze, beautiful weather.

I grew up in Indiana and never realized that that particular style of burger was just a regional thing until I moved away.  I almost always make it a point to stop off at a GD Ritzy's whenever I'm back.

I just love how Rockaway's does their pimento cheese fries and it is such a fun spot to watch games. Maybe not the "best" burger but a good one.

Absolutely nailed NC with Brooks though. Their chili-cheese burger is magical. The chili itself is among the best I have had, usually get their chili cheese fries too.
well now I've got some burgers to try.  I don't make it to that part of Charlotte often but I'll have to give it a shot next time I do.

Huh, the Colorado place is 15 mins from me and had no idea it even existed in that little town. Sedalia is overrun with Bikers and tourists on the weekends but still, will have to check it out soon and report back.

Texas Tavern/Texas Inn is a weird iconic atmosphere but nowhere near the best burger in Virginia.

Mike's Grill in Blacksburg held that title for a long time but closed in 2016.   Best I've had since then is Beer88 in Lynchburg, but I am sure there is some hole in the wall up in the NoVa suburbs that is great too.

The burger they talked about from Brooks includes Liver Mush.  Liver Mush seemed to be what they were pimping the most.  My grandmother cooked it growing up, and it is an acquired taste, but I think the smell of it just cooking would make someone run for the door. I'd might suggest it to an enemy, but I don't know if I'd go that far. I'm not sure what place in NC I think makes the best burger, but Hops is my favorite burger here in Greensboro. That could always change.

No kidding. Well then I'm an idiot. An idiot who needs to make a lot more money so I can helicopter there.

Only places I have been on the list are Peter Luger in NY and Craigie on Main in MA.

Peter Luger is a cop out. Whatever your qualifications, Luger is not #1.

Craigie on Main, I've been once. The server was taking our orders, I was undecided. He asked if I had the burger before.....No, my first time here....Guy just walks away from table. Sends me the burger, and it was insanely good. We ordered another for the table.

Absolutely.

Burgers on me.

FBGs aren’t doing this already?

Surprised NFA is #1 in GA. I live very close to it, and had it once and haven’t been back. Village Burger, a stones throw away, is better IMO.

yeah, it's a lazy and uninspired pick - i have no issue with the burger itself, i just don't think it merits such lofty accolades.

now, had they chosen the one i mentioned (in S.I.) i would've been very impressed ... means they actually did some legit legwork - but outside the ferry there really isn't much to draw folks to the boro (maybe the Aquarium? Paul Castellano's "White House" on Todt Hill? "Impractical Jokers" reality tour?)

I live a block and a half from Zuni. It's an exceptional burger but it's an odd choice to pick a fine dining establishment for the best burger in the largest state in the US.  The restaurant is dine-in only and the burger is only served at lunch or after 10PM in the bar.

Been to Staten Island once, my roommate was this SI girl and we went to grab some stuff. Her Eye-Talian parents lived in one of those neighborhoods where all the houses are on top of each other and look identical. He father, Tommy, (you're from Bawston? I thought so, you tawk funny) gave me the grand tour of the living room (We got my wife's collectibles ova here...the fugazi cable box.....), then called the local Italian joint to order some takeout, and had to get the owner on the phone (tell him it's Tommy Dantone) to order rigatoni.

So much freaking fun

hey, HEY NOW ...

i'm of the Boot, meself - be nice! 😁 🇮🇹

i love doin' biz/spending time there, with a ton of kindred folk ... my point was the burger ranking dude geared it to tourists, and, well ... it ain't the boro's strong suit, to say the least.

but, yeah - it is it's own ecosystem, no bout adout it

I thought I had heard of every place in Detroit.   Never heard of the burger place listed although it looks good.

Millers Bar in Dearborn down the street from Ford Motor World Headquarters has always been very popular in SE Michigan.

Very basic system. No plates just wax paper, no bills..you walk up to bar and tell them what you had including beers.
Never heard of the place mentioned either though I don't go to Delray very often. That's a pretty rough area. Miller's would have been my nominee as well.

It's been roughly 10 years since I've been, but their roasted chicken was a truly memorable dish.

I've been there...

Most excellent burger and the epitome of a dive bar.

The choice of ****'s Drive-In for Washington is pretty decent.   There are better places, but ****'s is iconic, consistent and cheap.

California's is just a bad pick.   There are so many great places that really specialize in burgers, choosing a place known for fine dining and a burger with foccacia bread?  Stupid.

Hodad's above isn't a bad pick, but the best burger I've ever had was at Rocky's Crown Pub in Pacific Beach.   Ask @Maurile Tremblay on this one, @Joe Bryant.

I've had Hodad's only once and thought it was overrated. (It was more about quantity than quality.)

Rocky's is the best burger in San Diego. I went through a phase, years ago, of trying to sample every burger that was identified on any "best burger" list of San Diego. There are a bunch of good ones. I'd name Cass Street Bar & Grill and Lahaina's as being in the underrated category. But the best is Rocky's and it's a pretty easy choice, IMO.

One of the things about PR is that it's in the middle of the very best rangeland in Texas.  I imagine, but I don't know this for sure, they are using more or less locally processed beef for all their products.

It's well worth the trip, it's not expensive, despite being well visited by a lot of extremely wealthy people and political types.

I like their choice for Oklahoma.  I guess we're known for onion burgers from back on Route 66 primarily in El Reno, but their choice of Tucker's which is a much better version of an onion burger is a good choice.  Tucker's is one of my favorite places for a burger and while they call it a local chain, it's really just a locally owned place that does good food w/ multiple locations all owned by one local company.  I don't call that a chain.
It’s always onion burgers for OK. I get the historical significance of those joints but just one time I want to see Meers on one of these lists. It’s a cattle ranch and their burgers are amazing.

My go to in Tampa is Danny’s All American Diner. It’s an old DDD spot, but they are very no frills and make solid burgers imo. I used to work across the street from it back in the day, but my heart thanks me for getting another job.

There are so many great places to get a burger in NYC.  I'm sure Peter Luger has great burgers, but that isn't what you get when you go there.

For Alabama, I haven't been to Callaghan's Irish Social Club in Mobile, but it will be hard to beat these:

Chez Fonfon - An upscale burger for sure but it is really good

Chubbfather's - Best of the greasy spoon burgers, really big and tasty (albeit a little greasy for me), and I went to high school with the owner.  Great guy who gives back to the community.

Baha Burger - Incredible variety of meats and the owner is a great guy

Yeah, Luger is not the right choice.  New York is a big state, with zillions of burger joints, obviously.  My favorite is Rare Bar and Grill on Lexington Ave.  Way better than Luger.

I tossed Hodad's up in contrast to the foo foo burger that won for Cali. It's just a well-known excellent old school burger. I didn't suggest it was the state's best. Seems burgers need to be categorized. Two categories probably works. Chef's creations and old school burgers. I'd probably love that burger at Zuni Cafe, but I don't go there for a burger. My years in SD were mostly spent in north county. Two best burgers I've had there were from microbreweries. Stone and Bagby. Stone's with maple bacon and their homemade steak sauce was really good. When I next visit my nephew (Carlsbad), I'll push for a trip to Rocky's.

Haven't ever heard of the https://www.judiceinn.com/ in Lafayette that they picked for LA, but sounds and looks pretty good.

The best burger I've personally had to date in LA is https://portofcallnola.com/

@Doug B @SaintsInDome2006 @worrierking  and other LA FBGs,  What do you guys think? Ever been to this place?

I have a friend who is from Louisiana and just asked her about it. She said everyone loves the burgers but it pisses her off because their big thing is no fries. They are proud of that fact.

Haven't been to Judice Inn, but have been to Port of Call (back in my going-out days).

The Port of Call burger was (and still seems to be) a full half-pound burger, and so it was especially satisfying and filling after knocking a few back. I would put some other local burgers up on the medal stand with Port of Call, however -- the PoC burger was outstanding, but I wouldn't say singular in the area.

Just sticking with the French Quarter and going from 25-year-old memories ... I'd put Deja Vu's burgers and Verti Marte's burger-on-french right up there with Port of Call,. And out in the burbs ... I've always had a soft spot for Ground Pati's burgers, too.

Agree Simey.  Desert Power, you a liver mush fan?  I'd compare it to someone taking a dump after drinking Budweiser all night on a good burger.

Best burger in NC comes out of my kitchen.

also have never been to Motzs, have seen it on another list I believe.  Agree it looks like one of a dozen slider places you can go to

im also still partial to Miller’s, I’m like a half mile away.  I just like that it’s a no frills simple burger

I've had it a couple of times. Don't hate it, but don't seek it out either. I usually do the double chili-cheeseburger all the way + bacon at Brooks.

Huh, the Colorado place is 15 mins from me and had no idea it even existed in that little town. Sedalia is overrun with Bikers and tourists on the weekends but still, will have to check it out soon and report back.
I'll be interested in what you have to say. I haven't heard of them either. The first place that came to my mind in Colorado is Big Burger World in Canon City.

The Florida entry is totally off base, not sure what they are trying to say there but that's not a burger.

-Houston's is one of the best $20 burgers that comes to mind although it has been some time since I've had one. All their steak trimmings go in there.

Never been to Solly's (Wisconsin), but damn, now I want a burger.

GO!

Out of all the burger places in a state it's hard to narrow it down to one. But if Solly's isn't tops it's definitely in the top 5. And they aren't exaggerating when they say it comes out in a pool of butter. They nailed Wisconsin. And Solly's would make a very good run as the best burger in America.

Just a side note. Solly's was very close to closing last year because of the pandemic (like down to it's last week). Only reason they survived is because they received a grant from the barstool fund.
