Off shoot of the Fisher thread. It might be too early to rank some of these guys, but let's try.

Simply put, if you could have any coach for your team going forward, which would you pick? The poll says "best", while I'm asking for which one you'd pick, if these are different, please explain why.

With all respect to guys with long careers so far, guys like BB, Coughlin, Reid, Shanahan - you don't get their career to this point, only what they can do from now on.

I picked Sean Payton. The guy coaches to win games. I'm so tired of coaches playing not to lose. At least this guy will take his shots.

I love the Wade Phillips and Josh McDaniels votes. Those might be the two most hated coaches by their respective fans.

If I'm buying coaching futures, and I assume that Payton has reached his peak already, then I go with Smith or Schwartz. I voted for Schwartz.

Fisher, Schwartz, Payton, and Tomlin were all coaches I considered.

Despite WMD's argument otherwise, I believe Fisher does more with less. Even if Fisher were responsible for all of the draft picks that didn't work out, he was also responsible for one of the best offensive lines in the league which keeps his teams close in most games.

Jim Schwartz's teams are beginning to demonstrate this Fisheresque quality of fighting hard and playing tough through mistakes. I think he's going to be an excellent coach if injuries don't cost him a chance to see his team turn the corner.

Payton's offense is spectacular. The fact that this team isn't playing great on offense right now and its still scoring more than a lot of units is a testament to his skill and work with Brees. Sometimes a great sign of a good leader/manager is his ability to get out of the way of his talent and let them do their job. He does this with Brees. He did this by volunteering some of his own salary to sign Greg Williams as the DC and they are now SB champs.

Tomlin has stones. He followed Cowher on the heels of a SB-winning team with a lot of vets or young guys on the rise and he made this team his. He's not just a George Seifert or Barry Switzer. What bothers me is that he inherited the best DC in the game so I don't feel unequivocally confident in his skills as a head coach just yet. There's a difference between inheriting a great staff (Tomlin) and recognizing you need to get someone and make every move possible to get it (Payton).

That leaves Belicheck. He's a great strategist. He engenders great respect from his players. He's adjusted tactics on offense and defense from season to season and game to game, and finds multiple ways to get players that work out for him - even if draft picks don't work out.

I'm sure McCarthy, Reid, and Peyton Manning ( ) deserve more credit.

If I had to rank them...

1. Belicheck

2. Payton

3. Fisher

4. Tomlin

5. Schwartz

I really like Payton for his aggression and willingness to do unconventional things, however, he makes a ton of minor tactical errors. I am not sure how often other head coaches do this because I watch all and pay much more attention to Saints games vs the rest of the NFL.

:) at the Tomlin votes. The minute after he was hired, he pressed the autopilot button.
Never underestimate the average Pittsburgh sports fan completely overrating their coach or favorite player... :lmao: But what does, ".. he pressed the autopilot button," mean? Is he on autopilot this year, in getting the Steelers to 3-1 without their starting QB? While I don't think Tomlin should have the 3rd most votes in this poll, he is undoubtedly a very good coach.

Unlike players, coaches can only be judged by 1 criteria. Winning. There's an active coach with 3 SB rings and he was a miracle play from having a 4th. Until Belichick retires or Shanny wins another ring, there should be no debate.

I considered Kubiak. Kind of suprised to see 0 votes for him. I know he hasn't won anything yet, but that is clearly a team on the rise.

The better poll would be "Who's the second best coach in the NFL?"

I HATE New England. HATE. THEM. But I still know Bill is the best coach in the NFL, hands down.

The real argument is who's second?

Fischer?

Tomlin?

Payton?

Best coach? BB, no doubt.

Which one I'd like for my team going forward? Ryan. He makes the entire experience of being a Jets fam more fun. He's winning, but he has an energy, a sense of humor that even makes his press conferences fun to watch. I think he's good with X's and O's, and great with people, especailly players. He changed the self image of the Jets overnight.

If the Skins have a few good years, I'd consider Shannie #2.

If the Skins win the Superbowl in the next 2 years, I think you could argue him vs. Bill for #1.

Other than that? Whose resume is even close?

I'll say this, Rex Ryan > Buddy Ryan. Both were amusing, but you laugh with Rex. Buddy? Not so much.

Addendum: If the Steelers win the Superbowl this year (after their atrocious offseason and ridiculous QB problems) Tomlin will be the clear #2 coach IMO. Shannie may have a great resume, but when's the last time he did d!ck with anyone not named "Elway"?

He got to the playoffs and won a game there with Jake Plummer. That puts him on par with everything Belichick has done without Tom Brady. What did Jimmy Johnson do without Troy Aikman? What did Bill Walsh do without Joe Montanna?

:goodposting: It's funny how people forget that Shanny took the Broncos to the AFC title game with Jake freaking Plummer at QB. Also, the fact that anyone would put Fisher ahead of Shanny is a laugh.

Voted Belichick. Payton is probably second, but let's see him do it for longer before mentioning him in the same breath as Billl. Belichick has been doing it for over a decade now, and despite all of the bad press he has received over the years (some of it deserved), I actually like him. I like Payton, too, but let's see how he gets his team to respond the season after winning the Super Bowl, now that the Saints are marked, so to speak. The Pats were hated for so long, still are I'm sure--every team they play, and played, especially during their reign of dominance, brought everything they had for that one week (if they did nothing else that year, they'd be happy if they at least beat the Patriots), yet all the Pats did was win. That's impressive. Winning the first Super Bowl is fun, it's all about enjoying the ride. Repeating is a grind, it's hard work and mentally draining.

This wasn't supposed to be a "select one from each" poll. We just can't list 32 options in one poll.

okay, but I had to get #1 out of the way before moving to #2. Then #3, #4, etc. I expect to have 31 polls.

I agree with your first comment if this were a HOF style vote. But I think it's more interesting to think about this going forward. Ryan is a good choice, seems we have a group of talented young coaches.

I see that we have at least one die-hard niner fan or a niner-hater voting here. :hifive:

Also to be a true list of going forward, maybe we should include a few coaches not currently in the league:

[*]Jim Harbaugh

[*]Gruden

[*]Holmgren

[*]Parcells

[*]Cowher

I am sure everyone here can come up with some better candidates.

It's real easy to pick the guys with the most talented teams. Nice to see some people go out on a limb here and there. :excited: And personally I won't vote for someone who it's been proven has cheated to win games. Although I do think he is otherwise a good coach. I digress.

Going forward, these names came to mind (in no particular order):

Sparano: Has managed some success while working with less than several other teams. A guy that focuses on the trenches and that's where games are won/lost

Kubiak: Leading a team that is headed in the right direction in a big way.

Fisher: Have always loved him as a coach, except when my team played him. He coaches his players well from pre-season, through the least game of the year, as well as during the game. Gets the most out of all his men.

McDaniels: I don't particularly care for him, nor do I like his style. But I wanna see what he does between this year and next. Could be be interesting and successful or a complete disaster. A lot of turnover so far.

Spagnuolo: I'm sure you all see my team to the left. Fact remains, this is only his 2nd year. So far he's dealt with the following: inherited arguably the worst/least talented team in football, a virtual total roster turnover, no salary cap room initially, and a change in ownership. Last year's record was expected. 2-2 early on this year. Finally starting to get some quality players. They are still one of the youngest teams in the NFL. But since he's been here, the players give 110% every single day for him. A couple more talented players and look out. No one can argue what he did as a coordinator in NY, and wile Bradford's been getting a ton of recognition, the Defense has gotten WAY better since he's been in charge. Give them one more year.

I also like: Mike Smith, Sean Payton, Jim Schwartz

If they get back in the game: Gruden and Cowher

People forget Bill's work with Giants too. He was the coordinator of the defense that basically won the 90' team their ring.

Hot.

As a Jets fan, the only coach in the NFL I'd give up Rex Ryan for right now is Sean Payton.

I'm not going to add Parcells unless there's something indicating there's a good chance he'll come back. The others I can see, so maybe I'll add the top 5 candidates. I think Jim Harbaugh would be a great HC.

I was very disappointed when Spagnuolo went to STL and didn't stay in NY to be Coughlin's successor. IMO Spagnuolo is going to be one of the best coaches in the league.
