Much like the "classic" Brewers logo, it takes a long time for people to look past the "elb" and realize it really is an "M".

A lot of modern logos look like they were designed by committees. An artistic process that relies on focus groups is more likely to produce a lowest common denominator outcome.

The truly iconic logos have become iconic over time. If something like the Flyers or Canadiens logo went through a design review today, there would be people who would want to add team names, hockey pucks and mascots into them. The end result would be something that every person who can read would obviously associate with the team but that's not the purpose of a logo.

The NBA has the worst collection of logos of all the big four American leagues. Most somehow manage to be both too busy and non-descript. I think the Spurs and Blazers are the best of a poor set. The Mavericks, Raptors and Bucks are among the worst in all of sports.

The NBA's problem is all the teams include the city and mascot names in the logo, leading to the busy/non-descript phenomenon as any actual logo design gets lost in all the words.

The MLB teams that include city/mascot all do it with those in small print, embedded in the edges of the circle. The logo inside the circle stands on it's own.

The only NBA teams that do this (BOS/GSW) have pretty good logos.

You mention Spurs and Blazers. Those work because they really have an NFL feel to them, with a small, simple recognizable logo that stands on it's own.

Wizards is just the dumbest name ever. At least they went back to the red, white, and blue color scheme. Bullets logo was ok, but their uniforms were ####### sweet.

It's funny that this chick saw the devil but never noticed the "NJ" in the Devils logo. I only noticed the "NJ", and not the devil.

Lol she's seeing something that's not there (it's just a stylized J with the horns and tail). The original logo (changed before the first game but shown when they announced the team name) had the N fully formed nestled in the J - they later cleaned it up by fusing the 2 letters).

Off topic but the owner, John McMullen didn't want to name the team the Devils at all - the local newspaper basically announced a name contest and vote and he kinda got force along. He wanted to call them the Meadowlanders (no eyeroll only out of respect for Dr. McMullen) - every year he until he sold the team my tickets were delivered in an envelope with a return address for "Meadowlanders, Inc."
