Which of these three guys do you value the most in terms of rating draft talent, making solid projections and generally be 'right' or 'knowledgeable'?

I like all 3 guys to some degree. The slobbering done over Mayock gets old though, especially when he can't even keep his voice through draft weekend.

Mayock gets jerked off by everyone, but the problem with him is that his knowledge seems to only go about 2 rounds deep. Watch Day 3 of ESPN vs. NFLN, and the difference is massive. I still like him, and he does great film breakdown of players. It's just that his knowledge is shallow, because he is a TV guy, and there's no reason to go very deep, it's not like he's putting out a magazine or a website. Not a knock on him, he's just a different animal than the rest.

Maybe if McShay would spend less time playing off Mel, and pandering (rather obviously) to the anti-Mel crew, I'd respect him more. Spends way too much time on TV rolling his eyes, and portraying himself as the sane alternative to crazy Mel. Disagree with Mel, fine. But then explain your position, don't just make an exasperated face, like you just cannot believe that anyone could possibly hold this opinion. McShay is capable of this, their First Draft podcast is fantastic, and is a must-listen. He and Kiper have a great back-and-forth on that show.

Kiper's biggest problem is that he's a bit of a knob. He doesn't pay much attention to how he comes across on TV, and has that same rat-a-tat style since he started on the show waaaay back in the day. No one on TV comes close, not even close, to the depth of knowledge of these players he carries around in his head. And at the end of it all, if I want to get info about some unknown LB my team took in the 6th round, Kiper will be the only one on TV giving it to you. The ONLY one.

I'd love to see the NFL Draft Scout guys get a TV voice. They are the best online resource by far.

:goodposting: McShay and Kiper also focus more on WHERE players get drafted, while Mayock focuses more on talent evaluation.

I think it is funny how each of them seems to have very thin skin. I am not sure if it is schtick or each just genuinely get distressed/angry when challenged by someone on set.

You know, you're right, and the really absurd part is, their position could change in two days. It does every year.

As far as where these guys go, they know as much as we do. Year after year, other then the obvious picks, I find myself saying, "wow, didnt see that coming" more than I say, "Wow, the anal-lists were right"

They have more knowledge about the players and of what teams are thinking because they are around it more...and its their job. But lets face it, when it comes down to predicting where they go, I listen to no of them as it changes day to day...so they are not even trusting themselves.

Point - They are more for the novice NFL fan then the fans who submerse themselves in football like us...and they work for ESPN, so they are almost always wrong, lol.

Mayock works for the NFL Network. I think the harder thing in figuring out where a player gets drafted is the fluid nature of the draft. Sure, you can sit down and say this team will likely go this direction or that and then things fall into place as you move down. But, what really happens is that your guess can miss once and it has consequences on how every other decision... that can snowball. However, what is even more of a impact in screwing around with people's guesses is all the trades that go on as the draft moves on. You simply can not project what trades will go down and how many. Finally, there is all of the misinformation and maneuvering that teams do these days in order to get other teams guessing and get trades to happen/not happen. Frankly, I am surprised on how much that actually hit on where players get drafted when you really think about it. What I am more interested in is not as much as their guessing of where players get picked/what teams are thinking for picks but more so about their valuation of the rookies coming into the league.

Couldn't disagree anymore. Take the combine for example, Mayock was breaking down the game of guys I had literally never heard of. Obviously that is all relative to my knowledge of college players. Bottom line, is that would be more accurate of a statement if made about McShay or Kiper. They work for ESPN so naturally they cover the "big story". That being the first round

In many years of watching the draft I have never seen Kiper stumped on a player, including the late rounds. He literally has something to say about every name called. I don't think there is anyone else on the planet that could do that right now.

Yeah, I haven't watched enough of either Mayock or McShay to know their depth of knowledge but Kiper's is fantastic, whether you like the delivery or not.

One of my knocks against Mayock has been his reluctance to publicize a mock draft. Not sure what took so long, but he finally has released a mock this year.

I hate mock drafts and watching the NFL Network it looks like all the guys on there do too.

So ummm, some got it wrong by pick 2, most got it wrong by pick 5, and all got it wrong by pick 8...whats the point of Draft Gurus again?

I don't know what's worse. Kiper being on a list of "best TV Draft Guru", or the fact that he has 24 votes.
Who else would you put up there? Also, can you expand on why you made these statements? Thanks in advance.
How 'bout just putting Mike Mayock on the list and call it a day.
I do not see the fun in that.
Then you should have said "Favorite TV Draft Guru".

That's why Mayock doesn't usually do mock's, one pick out of the ordinary screws up the rest. He evaluates talent and gives you the list of best to worst, but can tell you with much accuracy who the team is going to take when they are on the clock.
