Big Ten Basketball 2022/2023 - Return to Power (1 Viewer)

They've been playing great and gelling as a team. They played great in WL the first time they met.

Looks like Juwan Howard is pulling a Tom Izzo getting his team hot down the stretch.
Maybe those two big name freshmen (Houstan and Diabate) are realizing that they can earn some serious $$ if they play up to their ability.  They've both been projected as one-and-done, but I've seen them low-first round picks, given how inconsistently they've played.

Boilers lucky to get the win today. Maryland played very well, Purdue did not….(except for Williams in the last 4 or 5 minutes).

Brutal effort. The team admitted after UM that Michigan played harder. Everything to be motived for this game and we sit there and watch Maryland play harder. Somebody in that locker room needs to step up and lead.

I thought Stefanovic got Purdue back in the game with that flurry of 3s, but Williams was the difference down the stretch. I kept waiting for Ivey to take over since Maryland was gassed but, other than the 3 pt play at the end, he never really got going.

Besides being a a mess in general from all of the turmoil this season, Maryland is so short-handed. They only go about 7 deep on good days and their leading scorer didn't play yesterday.

Obviously this all depends on matchups - and its possible to get a really advantageous road to the semis - but it doesn't seem like there is a F4 team in the Big Ten.

The conference is very deep, but just not sure if there are any elite teams. Maybe Purdue. Maybe Kofi will be too good in the tournament. But if the O/U was 0.5 Big Ten teams in the Final Four, I think I'd take the under.

Its hard to imagine wanting to play for Fran McCaffery.

Also - why doesn't he hire an asst coach who knows how to coach defense?

Spartans looked like total dog #### today. Pissing away the season.
They did, for most of the game. But Illinois went brain-dead down the stretch and is fortunate MSU didn't steal it away.

Underwood's a good coach but, man, he acts like an idiot. I don't know how his players can stand that crap.

Typical Brad Davison first half -

@umhoops - "Brad Davison watch: a trip that led to a jumpball and a elbow right to Hunter Dickinson's ribs. We're only at the under 12 media timeout."

Fire his ###. That’s ridiculous

once a thug always a thug

Looked like Diabate and Williams all threw punches.

Apparently Howard was upset Gard called a timeout. Howard still had a starter in down 20 with 30 seconds left and full-court pressing with WI reserves in. Don't want to prolong the game? Then don't press.

First, Howard shouldn't be coaching.  This isn't his first offense.  Sure, he didn't throw a punch last year in the altercation versus Maryland, but he had to be physically restrained (or he very well may have).  He's not a positive role model, and clearly has an issue controlling his temper.

Second, after watching his press conference, I think it's safe to say that he was either in some sort of state of shock, or he's just not very smart.  Didn't answer some of the questions in a way that indicates that he even understood them.  And, absolutely no remorse (seemingly).  He basically said that they weren't pressing (just playing full court defense, which isn't much different), and nothing led up to the punch being thrown other than him being touched during the handshake exchange (which makes almost no sense).  Then, he goes on to say that his main regret is that some of the players threw punches also, which he never meant to happen.  How about regretting the fact that you threw a punch (or a slap?) yourself?!?!?

All in all, a very bad look, and he seems to be missing some of the most critical points, while focusing on minor/irrelevant details.  If he coaches another game this year, I'll be shocked.

MoP has posted how often in this thread? (Never)

-You have to do something Out of Bounds or something that would get my attention thru ways that wouldn't include normal media because I don't watch all that much NCAA out side of when Miami actually has a decent team.

So for me to see a 90 second video and run to the Big Ten thread in the FFA, you gotta try hard to get me to post a single word about college basketball and yet here i am.

-I've had the pleasure of meeting Juwan Howard when he was a member of the Miami Heat and also an assistant coach here so i have a genuine like for the guy and always have. I understand he was upset and felt like the Wisconsin Coach needlessly drew the end of the game out but it's his right as a coach even though I understand unwritten rules.

-You absolutely cannot throw a punch like Howard did, surprised he wasn't arrested quite honestly for assault. I lost a lot of respect for Howard today and I hope he can work his way thru this, everyone deserves a 2nd chance but it shouldn't be on the sidelines at Michigan even though he is Basketball Royalty there, gotta step down if they won't fire him outright, that's totally uncalled for even if the other guy he hit called him some slur which i have a feeling is what we will hear but I hope not. I hope Howard admits he made a huge mistake, apologizes and accepts his fate.

Time to write a book and go on tour about the downfall of actions like the one he took today.

This is at least the fourth non-coaching incident with Juwan Howard. Ran onto court at MSU during play in 2020, threatened Maryland’s Mark Turgeon last year and picking up a loose ball for a technical at Iowa a few days ago. By far, this is the worst.

My guess is, for the time being, Michigan suspends him for the rest of the season to take some of the immediate heat off. He should be fired, though - you just can't do that. Besides creating a danger by his own actions, he's set an awful example for his players.

That's the rub. A coach should lead young men. Throwing fists is not leading.
