Nah - don't worry about that. it's about feelings here.I don’t know about racist, but it seems odd to have a national anthem that appears to celebrate the rise of an enemy power.

It's straight up racist to call it "The Black Anthem". In fact, singling anything out by race is the very definition of racism.I'm not familiar with that song. But sounds racist.
Also - do you think Lift Every Voice and Sing is a racist song?
Yep. MLK is rolling in his grave knowing everything he fought for has gone to waste. Is it me, or does it seem we're reverting back to separate but equal? From Anthems to social clubs to certain areas on college campuses etc etc. Regression in the name of equality??
And that's all great.....but it's being played alongside our actual National Anthem......and you assume it pisses off only white people? As if Americans with other skin colors all think the National Anthem isn't for them?Lift Every Voice and Sing was written in 1900 for a celebration of Abraham Lincoln's birthday, and was dubbed "The negro national anthem" by the NAACP in 1919. It's certainly not official in any way. Of course at that point The Star-Spangled Banner wasn't either, that happened in 1931.
It's a very positive song with a lot of history behind it. It's not like it was written yesterday just to piss off white people.
Do people refer to it as the black national anthem? What does the the NAACP call it? What is it called in its wiki page? What do you want, an official law enacted or a constitutional amendment? It’s the black national anthem, and it will de facto become “official” as soon as it’s regularly played alongside “the other” national anthem. That’s kind of why the NFL doing it is a big deal.It is not a second official anthem of the United States and never will be. People are just overreacting because the NFL is going to play it before their games this season (even though they played it last year)
The MLB plays "America the Beautiful" in every game for years and it hasn't replaced the National Anthem.
It is just a song, the country will be fine.
I honestly think a real parrot would make more sense. So what, you don't think a private, for profit, institution like the NFL should be able to play whatever songs they want before their games? This sounds kind of Socialist to me.
It's cute that you honestly think you honestly think.I honestly think a real parrot would make more sense.
That’s exactly what’s going on. This is what the Liberals want. Identity politics - Liberals created it and it’s going to be our undoing. Is it me, or does it seem we're reverting back to separate but equal? From Anthems to social clubs to certain areas on college campuses etc etc. Regression in the name of equality??
The weirdest part is the song doesn’t mention black or race.Weird thing to get worked up about, but I guess we are at a point where tensions ramp up on just about any mention of black or race.
And when it comes to dividing up the country you can bet your ### that all these white limousine Liberals won’t be neighbors with blacks. I worked with one of these uppity Leftists and when I told her I wanted to move to South Carolina she said, “Why on earth would you want to move there?” with the obvious insinuation that Southerners are all racist dolts. I responded by telling her, “South Carolina is 29% black, which is about 28% more black than where you live.”It's straight up racist to call it "The Black Anthem". In fact, singling anything out by race is the very definition of racism.
But, hey, we need to fight racism with even more racism, amiright? South Africa says, "it worked for us!".
I nominate 'Let's get it on'Our national anthem kind of sucks. It's hard to sing and we really only play 1/4 of the song anyway.
Let's just get a new, all-inclusive national anthem going and play one song.
Actually, it's about persevering through slavery and other struggles. The most direct reference is "bitter the chastening rod".The weirdest part is the song doesn’t mention black or race.
My current suburban neighborhood in Texas is about 1000 times more diverse than my previous suburban neighborhood in California. And when it comes to dividing up the country you can bet your ### that all these white limousine Liberals won’t be neighbors with blacks. See, it's this kind of stuff we need to get rid of. It's 2021. We don't need any song with "chastening" in its lyrics as an anthem of any sort. Bob Dylan's still alive. He won a freaking Nobel Prize for Literature. Let's have him write some lyrics. Or Andre 3000. Whatever.Actually, it's about persevering through slavery and other struggles. To be clear your issue isn’t with the song, the lyrics of the song or that it’s being played before the games.BladeRunner said:It's straight up racist to call it "The Black Anthem". In fact, singling anything out by race is the very definition of racism.

Correct. To be clear your issue isn’t with the song, the lyrics of the song or that it’s being played before the games.
Your issue is that it is still commonly referred to by its nickname from 1919?
I don't believe you are familiar with the song but I believe it to be inspirational on many, um, levels.DropKick said:Dropping the BS card on this..
Do people refer to the National Anthem as the 'white one' other than the OP?ekbeats said:Do people refer to it as the black national anthem?
None that I have ever heard of.Do people refer to the National Anthem as the 'white one' other than the OP?
maybe mostly people who claim to be tired of racial division, but use phrases like that and add to racial division?None that I have ever heard of.
No, the left has been doing that for years nowKarmaPolice said:Weird thing to get worked up about, but I guess we are at a point where tensions ramp up on just about any mention of black or race.
Yes. The ones who created the black national anthem for themselves.Do people refer to the National Anthem as the 'white one' other than the OP?
Bingo. Thanks for helping them out Blade. It went right over their head and straight out the window.Yes. The ones who created the black national anthem for themselves.
Just trying to understand your positionCorrect.
I also see what you're doing, but just because it's 100 years old doesn't mean it's NOT racist. I mean, there are a LOT of racist terms (still used today, btw) that go even further back than that - does that make them right just because they're from the old times?
Do they play national anthems before sporting events in other countries, excluding national teams? No need for any songs, nor really any pregame stuff at all. Oh, and the kickoff should happen right on the scheduled time. And no commercial breaks unless at the end of the quarter or half.

Everything the NFL does is based on how it will be received by the public. I'm sure they have a team of people who crunch numbers on what each "social" decision means for their bottom lineNFL is trying to out stupid the NBA.
Sure and the NBA too. But their viewership is down 34 percent from 2019. Lots of companies are making bad decisions because they falsely believe being overly woke is profitable.Everything the NFL does is based on how it will be received by the public. I didn’t agree. It is profitable or at least more profitable than doing nothing.Sure and the NBA too. But their viewership is down 34 percent from 2019. Lots of companies are making bad decisions because they falsely believe being overly woke is profitable.
That is not realky disagreeing. Seems like you conceed from a bottom line perspective e you agree. The owners are caving into a fear by trying to avoid risk of of upsetting a few vocal players and seem willing to take the financial hit. This so-called black national anthem will get loudly booed at many games. Shoot, they may become a fun new pregame activity, booing through that stupid woke ### song.I didn’t agree. It is profitable or at least more profitable than doing nothing.
Not because it will drive more viewers but because they need cave in to the players else have this as an even bigger and longer distraction.
It’s the best of a losing situation for them.
I think the society we're in allows one color skin people to have their own national anthem .... but if any other color skin people wanted their own, that would be called racistwhoknew said:I'm not familiar with that song. But sounds racist.

To the NFL the game on the field is secondary to the game off the field. $$$$$$$Everything the NFL does is based on how it will be received by the public. I'm sure they have a team of people who crunch numbers on what each "social" decision means for their bottom line
I don't think the NFL and NBA is making these decisions because they feel it is profitable; they are making them (likely) to appease both the players, as both leagues have a high percentage of POC, as well as trying to placate the hardcore fans of each league. Casual fans, who are the ones who are more likely to stop watching because of this, come and go, but you can't afford to lose the hardcore fans.Sure and the NBA too.
