All I know is while there is a legitimate discussion to be had on this issue - one that necessitates a great deal of nuance and context and the ability to literally work through the details with some level of intellectual flexibility - why the hell would I even attempt such an effort when we know the history of Higgs and his predispositions (whether that's political/ideological views or his way of engaging or rather not genuinely engaging in said nuances and contextually driven discussion)?

That is a terrible rule. I believe the NCAA and other organizations have much better rules in place to address these situations. It can't just be about how the person identifies, there has to be more to it than that.

FWIW, a quick Google search tells me that 6 high school boys in 2014 posted times that would have beaten Florence Griffith-Joyner's women's world record. 6 kids..not just a one time fluke..and in high school.

My younger daughter turns 11 this summer, and she is tiny for her age. She will have to compete against 11-12 yos in her swim meets. She has no chance of being competitive. She would barely be competitive against the 9-10 yos. But, she will go out every meet and do her best, she will swim most events in the 2nd or 3rd heats, and she will try to improve her personal best times all summer.
Beyond that, the benefits she gets out of "competing" are that she is in the pool swimming everyday.
Should we change the rules so that she gets to compete for ribbons with other swimmers with comparable times? Because that would be more fair for my daughter - it would giver her a better chance to "win", and after all, she spends hours in the pool trying to improve....

Its pretty simple right - we let girls compete against girls, because they can't beat the boys. And the most important part of athletics is winning.

Without taking away from the individual in this case, I wouldn't oppose this governing body legislating their competition more closely, along with spelling out the rules more definitively.

No, oddly enough, my daughter is grounded enough that she enjoys improving her best times, and sees that as a worthwhile challenge. She does not define herself by "winning" swim meets.

Aren't the age groups an attempt to level that playing field since a 12yr old is obviously going to be more developed than a 9 year old? Is it a perfect system? No, but it's the most fair IMO. Its the same reason boys/girls are separated, IMO. However, I think the comparison is not apples to apples. Is your daughter choosing to be smaller than girls in her age group?
The person in the OP isn't really that fast; they're right in line with what's considered marginally fast for the HS girls (from what I remember); she would get smoked by the boys. I wonder if she was faster if they'd compete in the boys class or decide to go annihilate the girls.
