Breaking - Andrew Luck to retire (1 Viewer)

Take it from someone who held Aaron Hernandez for four extra seasons, just in case he was found not guilty and then just in case he won his appeal: drop Luck today. He's done.
I agree with the thinking Luck is done, but you have to keep him at least one year.  Even if the Colts draft another QB next year in Rd 1, Luck could decide to return to football and the Colts trade him.

Unless it's a 2 QB league with deep rosters or 1 QB league with super deep rosters, just cut him.

Can't believe former players would think like this. what a tool
Agree, but I suspect many of these former quarterbacks still have that "I will play till they have to carry me off the field to my deathbed" mentality. The newer generation is smart enough to realize that playing so long that you can't move after you retire isn't quite worth it.

I disagree.  Have to hold for a year
no way.  dude that is just your fandom messing with you.  He is done.  The amount of work he would have to put in with regards to working out would be insane.  He is going to shred muscle as I doubt he is going to keep doing NFL level workouts.

Good if he goes elsewhere.  Deserves so much better than Indy fans.

Perhaps Luck returns at some point (I am doubtful), but how long do you hold on to him?  Next summer, if you hear nothing, you will convince yourself to wait until camp . . . then the start of the season.  I have released Luck from my Dynasty team.  Roster spots are valuable: make a clean break, and move on.

Edit to add:  If Luck feels better next spring, it merely confirms what he believed: that he needed to step away from football.  Why would he return and put himself right back in the same situation?  And if Luck is still feeling the ill effects of the beating his body has endured, of course he is not returning.  I honestly can envision no scenario which convinces me Luck would return.

I bet he contemplates a return in a year or two if his stated reasoning was close to the truth.

Most likely he will be 30 or  31 years old and fully healthy, and fully removed from the mental strain of trying to rush through recuperation for a year or two.  That might change where hs is at today.  He won't feel trapped then...

There might even be a bit of Trent Williams here where Luck is just done with the Colts for some medical thing or otherwise, more than he is just done with football

I haven't seen this verified yet

@KentSterling: If the report of Andrew Luck’s tires being slashed is true, that’s pathetic.

................

But one of the replies was

@Orange__White: @KentSterling OJ kinda warned him

Doesn't have to pay back any money...  If the Colts made him pay back the signing bonus, would they then lose his rights if/when he comes back?

I am not dropping in SF dynasty.

As unlikely a scenario as this is I am curious as to how this would work.   The Colts did not ask for the return of the remaining bonus which I have read is over $24 million.   It doesn't seem right that he could keep the Colts cash and just negotiate a new contract with another team.

I wonder if Irsay told him to keep the money as sort of a way of saying "take some time to think about it, meanwhile keep ahold of this."

I gotta think that there is some kind of agreement in place that he can't keep the cash if he unretires and go play somewhere else.

Personally I think the Colts were foolish for letting him keep that money.  It establishes a precedent that bonus money is yours to keep regardless if you live up to the terms of the contract.   I don't think Luck was wrong for retiring -- that is his choice (although the timing could have been better) but I wouldn't have allowed him to keep money that he did not earn.  Just my 2 cents...

Seems the Colts would retain his rights if he decided to come back, so he couldn't just sign with another team.  I could be wrong.  Maybe it's a good faith gesture to let him know the organization is there for him should he decide to return in a year or two.  If they made him pay them back it may burn that bridge.  Speculation.

You are correct, the Colts retain his rights even if he sits for 3 years.

Dropped in my 10 team dynasty league.  The only preseason waiver run is tomorrow, and I think I'll let him sit there.  It's a 31 man regular roster, 1 IR, and 3 practice squad (rookies you drafted in the rookie draft).  As it's IDP, you're likely rostering 10-14 defenders (plus a kicker), taking you to 16-20 spots left for qbs, rbs, wrs and TEs.  Just can't do it over a full season, especially during bye weeks and if you have injuries (or holdouts like I do with Gordon).  Shark move would be to get him around week 10 or 11 once all of your guys have had their bye weeks if you're still pretty healthy and hold for the offseason - something I would do with Josh Gordon every year and then sell him for something once some good news hits.

News thing on MFL states that since he was moved to the reserve/retired list, he'd have to pass through waivers unclaimed (ain't going to happen) if he wants to play for the Colts this season.  Is there something different about future seasons (I assume they'd have to remove him from that list)?

They were talking about him leaving a half billion on the table potentially with the decision.  Not sure if that is accurate.  But he may be leaving a HOF induction on the table as well.  He was on his way, imo, if he could continue to get them to the playoffs and a potential SB.

Would he still get any consideration?  I would say no with a 7 year career.

Not true.  The Colts retain rights to Luck.

I don't know if this has been discussed already, but here is a cut and paste from the rotoworld clip....

The Colts placed Luck (calf/ankle) on the reserve/retired list Sunday, Ian Rapoport of NFL Network reports.

ANALYSIS
This backs up Luck's comments on the record from Saturday evening, namely that he's "going to retire." While this hypothetical is unlikely for a variety of reasons, he would have to pass through waivers unclaimed to return to the Colts if he wanted to play at some point this season. With the transaction official, the Colts will move on with Jacoby Brissett as their starting quarterback.

Pro football talk says this....

NFL Media (i.e., the NFL) explained on Sunday that, if Luck tries to return to the Colts before the trade deadline, he has to pass through waivers. That conflicts with my prior understanding of the rules, which was that a player on the reserve/retired list could emerge from retirement at any time before the Tuesday after Week 13, and that if he were released when attempting to return after the trade deadline, he’d be required to pass through waivers.

The difference, apparently, is that Luck landed on the reserve/retired list after reporting for the start of training camp.

I’d be pretty surprised if he got into the HOF. Zero MVPs, zero SB titles, zero first team all-pros, only led the league in one category (pass TD) once. He probably would have gotten there if he played 6 or 7 more seasons.

I don't think he will return, and I am dropping him, but the obvious "scenario" for a return is that when he's away from the game he realizes how much he misses it.  I mean Urban was having basically heart attacks he was so stressed out about football and he still wanted back in the game after a year of watching from the sidelines.

Luck and RG3 were pretty awesome college talents from that draft.  Too bad injuries, bad OLs, and with RG3 (maybe) selfishness derailed their careers.  To think what might have been for those two if they landed on Belichek, Reed, Tomlin, or another good coaches team.  Hard to believe RG3 will outlast Luck in the league given RG3's early playing style.  Of course Luck has $67M more in earnings, so he can probably afford to give up the NFL.

No chance he makes the HOF if he never plays again. He is not close to deserving.

No chance

Heard someone make the comment today that gave the whole thing perspective. Andrew Luck was drafted to replace Peyton after Peyton was released. Luck's career is now over and Peyton won't be eligible for the HOF for another 2 years.

You know, I've always felt that Indy made a mistake running Manning out of town, to draft Luck. Manning still had 3 MVP caliber years left in him, and the Colts could have gotten 3-4 1st rounders for the Luck pick. They could have surrounded Manning with a ton of talent, but chose not to.

Two things:

The fact that Indy let him keep $24 million of his signing bonus made the retirement decision a heckuva lot easier to pass up the potential money.

I don't think Luck is anywhere close to being HoF worthy.

I think my favorite part of the announcement was him talking about

- when he was 7, his dad took him to a NFL Europe game and he saw Vinatieri kick a game winning FG

- when he was 12, he watched Vinatieri kick a game winner in the SB

- Now he's retiring at 29 and Vinatieri is STILL KICKING for the Colts :lmao:

They would've been morons to trade Luck at the time unless the return was absurd. Once in a generation talent.

4 1st rounders, at least 1 in the top-10, isn't an absurd return? I mean take what the Rams got for RG3, and then add at least another 1st rounder, and that is what I think Luck would have fetched. They could have still kept Manning, while having 8 1st rounders over the 2012-2015 seasons.

Luck’s prospects were much higher than RG3. Would the Chiefs trade Mahomes for 4 1st round picks? No way

That isn't really the same thing. The Chiefs didn't have an MVP QB already, and Luck didn't have an MVP season on his resume.

A more apt comparison is, let's say somehow the Packers are the worst team in the NFL this year and get the #1 pick. Should they take a QB, or trade that pick for 4 1st rounders, assuming there was a QB deemed worth that? I think most would say keep Rodgers, and rebuild the team with 8 1st rounders in a 4 year stretch.

The Colts weren't really a bad team when they got the #1 pick in 2012, they were a decent team, that had a year starting a well past his prime Kerry Collins, and Curtis Painter. They were very likely going to be a playoff team in 2012 with Manning.

I'm not disparaging Luck by any means, just revisiting a thought I had in 2012, and how things might have gone, with Luck only playing 3(really 2) seasons more than Manning.

Many thought Manning was done. It was kind of a miracle he had a couple good seasons. His last season he was a shell of himself.

Couple good seasons is quite the understatement. He was the NFL MVP twice, and arguably the best player in the NFL from 2012-2014. For comparisons sake, the best 3 years of Luck's career(2014, 2016, 2018) pale in comparison to that 3 year stretch of Manning's.

Its weird to me how underrated Peyton Manning has become. I guess people mostly remember the last thing they saw. Same thing seemed to happened with Favre. From a legacy standpoint, maybe its better for Luck to have gotten out before he started breaking down more, and that was what people remembered?

Apologies if this has been covered but I have a bit of an issue I am hoping the SP can help with. I am commissioner of a consortium of eight 12 team leagues. The MFL settings will allow Luck on IR due to his injury, but this kind of situation isn't specifically covered in our bylaws. I am of the opinion, that similar to a player holding out, like Bell last year and potentially Zeke and Gordon, that IR is not an appropriate spot to stash such a player. With Luck, he is still listed as a Colt with an injury.

I am getting a lot of pushback on not allowing Luck there. I am not overly worried about it as I feel justified in making a decision to disallow it, but my question for the SP is this:

Do we expect the Colts to cut him? Will the MFL software list him as a FA soon? Cuts are due Sunday night and many Luck owners have some tough decisions to make.

What are your league's rules/by-laws? I specifically state in mine that only players on IR or PUP can be placed on IR - even if the site allows otherwise. Luck does not qualify for IR in the leagues I commish.

As I said the bylaws don't cover it. They allow for any player listed as IR or Out, to be placed on our IR. But this is a spirit of the law vs the letter of the law situation as I see it. Last year Bell was listed as OUT and we had to have a vote to disallow it. IR should definitely not be used for holding retired players.

Granted, I can add some language in the bylaws that will cover this, but if the Colts just cut him it will make my life easier.
