Brees agrees to contract w/ NO (1 Viewer)

Saints | Six-year deal reached with Brees

Tue, 14 Mar 2006 10:45:18 -0800

Jay Glazer, of FOXSports.com, reports the New Orleans Saints have reached a six-year deal with free agent QB Drew Brees (Chargers). Financial terms of the deal are not yet available.

If true, that is good news as a Bills fan. The Jets will have no option but to take a QB in the draft IMO with all of the QB movement today. I guess they could still go with Aaron Brooks, but that would make me happy too :hophead:

If the Jets have to go with a QB, that means that there is at least a slight chance that Ferguson could fall to the Bills...

I don't think the Jets have to go QB at all with Pennington still there, unless they plan on releasing him after this season. I haven't really looked at his contract. You really think Ferguson would get past the 49ers?

If NO is forced to pick at 2, which there is a good chance of, they would take Ferguson at 2.

Rumors here in Detroit are that Joey wants a trade (now that Kitna is in the fold)and perhaps the Jets would be interested....no link.

Interesting note from the link:
Saints sources also said that since they are no longer in need of a quarterback, the team will now try to trade the No. 2 overall pick in the NFL draft
That's pretty much expected. The most probable targets are AJ Hawk and Ferguson, though if they could stockpile picks by trading back and still grab a Chad Greenway, Winston Justice, or Ernie Sims, I'd be very happy.

Brees tore the labrum and damaged the rotator cuff in his throwing shoulder in the final game last season and underwent surgery Jan. 5. He said Sunday that he faces another four or five months of recovery and doesn't anticipate any long-term effects.

Now wait a minute! This, the article referencing his signing is the FIRST place I have seen torn rotator cuff included.

WTH? are the Saints, or anyone for that matter thinking signing this guy? and then possibly(as stated in the same article) trading down and passing on Matt L. as a possible franchise QB?

The Titans(assuming they don't draft Brick) must be dancing in the streets.

Everyone will point out that the Saints won't get much for the pick, but I think the lustre is off of this QB class and getting a proven QB and the ability to address the O-line or LB through the draft is an optimal outcome in my mind. It definitely gives them some flexibility.

i like how the dominos are falling... maybe leinart will drop to TEN & be reunited... but it makes sense for TEN to move pick (than team could leapfrog TEN for leinart... or somebody else?)... but how far?

they could target a QB later (VY or cutler)... da brick would make sense... they could use the consensus top defenders in mario & hawk... which might mean they wouldn't want to drop much past GB at 5 & SF at 6... though there are some scenarios where da brick might drop past 6...

GB & SF would seem to have too many holes to fill to want to move up... & they don't need a QB...

most likely trade candidate might be NYJ... but they might want to stand pat, realizing a highly rated QB prospect will fall in their lap regardless... leinart is more pro ready, if that is what jets are looking for...

Just to address everyone in one thread:

Yeah, this would conceivably increase the chances of the Saints taking Ferguson, but I actually don't see them going with Ferguson if picking there. But I think they'll be able to trade down. Of course that could just increase the chances of someone trading up to take Ferguson so either way, point taken.

As for the Jets going with Pennington, trading for Ramsey or trading for Harrington, all of those options make me fairly happy as a Bills fan. Pennington won't last another season and already didn't have enough zip on the ball. Harrington sucks and Ramsey has quite a few problems as well. Hey, I'm not saying that the Bills are any better off with Losman, but I can't say that any of those options scare me a whole lot.

And the Niners are precisely why I said that the chances increased for the Bills to get him. It definitely would not be a lock at all. The biggest argument against the Niners taking Ferguson would be that they already signed Jonas Jennings to a big contract to play LT. I guess they could play Ferguson at RT though.

Come on, let me dream for crying out loud...

Oh, and 6 years/$60M with $10M guaranteed for a guy coming off a huge shoulder injury? :X

Down goes Brees's fantasy value. Gla :D d I did not pick him up in one of my keeper leagues.
How so? The Saints have better receivers than SD, a weaker defense and they are much more likely to be playing from behind.

My first impression is that Leinart will look good in Raiders' Silver and Black...but on second thought I'm thinking Randy Moss is going to eat that kid alive when he can't hit Moss in stride 45 yards downfield. I still think the Saints and Raiders swap picks and Leinart goes to Oakland, though.

Have you ever watched Leinart...please. He seemed to hit that kid on 4th and long for the big play against Notre Dame on the final drive. Matt can hit guys down the field...kinda hard to show off your Senior year AFTER you win the Heisman and than your 2 RB behind you...let's see 1 of them WON THE FREAKIN HEISMAN...and the other only rushed for 20+ TD...give me a break. Saints would be lucky to get Leinart...however to get Brees and now have the #2 pick to trade and get more help...that's a good thing too.

Wow. How much better was New Orleans' offer? I hope it was a lot more than what Miami was offering.

J
Miami only wanted to give about $7 million a yr...NO $10 million a year...that's a 42% increase...but I also think NO had more guaranteed money...Saints really needed to get a guy they could build the franchise image around...I hope that turf is kind to Brees when he is laying on his back or gets driven into the ground on that concrete. He would have looked better in a Miami Dolphins uniform...but CPepp will be just fine for Miami.

Now please explain this to me? Is it the organization? The team or the city? I hope your rationale is solid...

i believe they had the new synthetic turf that most indoor stadiums use. no longer the carpet-concrete stuff. carney used to be money on that stuff but since we switched he has been awful.

MSNBC.comReport: Brees gets optimistic news on shoulder

Soon-to-be free agent QB may be ready to go for team's mini-camp in May

NBCSports.com news services

Updated: 11:11 p.m. ET March 2, 2006

San Diego Chargers quarterback Drew Brees received an encouraging report on his surgically-repaired right shoulder Thursday, according to ESPN.

Dr. James Andrews' analysis could allow Brees to participate in a team's mini-camp in May. Brees is scheduled to become a free agent this weekend.

Brees underwent arthroscopic surgery on Jan. 5. Andrews, who deemed the surgery successful, was able to correct the damage without having to use a more intrusive procedure involving a surgical knife, reported ESPN.

"At this point, he is eight-plus weeks post-op and is ahead of schedule relative to his healing process and recovery," Andrews told ESPN. "He has divided his time here in Birmingham, Ala., working under our shoulder rehab specialist Kevin Wilk along with rehabbing in San Diego."

Andrews said Brees' strength is improving and he expects a full recovery for the 2006 season.

"Our plan is to start him on an interval football throwing program at the four month interval, which will allow him to participate in some drills during an anticipated May mini-camp," Andrews told ESPN.

Brees suffered the injury in the Dec. 31 season finale against Denver.

Coach Marty Schottenheimer would like San Diego to keep Brees in the fold. But Chargers general manager A.J. Smith has said concerns over Brees' health would limit the team's offers.

The Chargers are approximately $17 million under the salary cap for 2006.

Last season, Brees completed 323 passes in 500 attempts for 3,353 yards. He threw 24 touchdowns and 15 interceptions. His quarterback rating was 89.2.

I think it's a good move for the Saints, even with the shoulder questions.

There's actually a good amount of value for pick #2 at this point:

If the Jets REALLY want Leinart, they will have to jump the Titans to get him. Similarly, the Titans would be in the market for that #2 as well to safeguard against this happening. There's also the possibility that another QB-hungry team, say Baltimore or Oakland, might have the right package to offer to move up.

Even if those teams are content to sit tight, Ferguson similarly would be attractive at that spot as well. And if they flip with the Jets, the Saints might be able to get even more in the way of picks to bump down again. This draft is totally different from last year as there guys out there that actually would be worth reaching up to get.

All in all it should be an interesting one.

Brees = Bust in NO's
what's the basis of that opinion?
Probably sour grapes over the Ricky Williams trade.
seriously. brees is a pretty good QB. new coach and system. they'll be back in NOLA. they have the #2 pick in the draft. while i'm not predicting pro bowl or superbowl appearance in Year 1, it's a little premature to calling "bust" at this juncture. maybe pre season games or even as late as week 1 but now is way too soon...

Easy there, turbo. I'm not criticizing Leinart. I've watched 8-10 of his games the last few years, and I think he'll be a very good NFL QB. That's why I think he'll look good in a Raiders' uni. I do think he's got an average NFL arm, but not a GREAT arm. And I think when he struggles to throw the deep ball with accuracy (which only a few guys in the league can do, BTW) Moss will go into his "Cancer" persona. The issue isn't Leinart, the issue is Moss.

as a Horn dynasty ownrs in 2 leagues I like this.

Who will NO draft now?
the big DE in the draft, or Brick..I see this as Tenn's opportunity to move up to take Bush now..they just signed Mawae..

I don't see them taking DE with Will Smith and Charles Grant already on the roster.

why a DE? williams is an excellent prospect but the saints already have smith/grant for the DE. they were very effective combining for 11 sacks and 120 tackles. all the while, splitting time with Howard. d'brick? maybe. a very good chance even. smart money has them dropping back to pick up picks and someone like hawk, if they can.

This trade does a lot for the Saints.

1. It gives the team the ability to sell itself to other FA's as a team that is playing for the near-term, not some long-term re-building. They have good receivers, a very good back and decent O-line. The addition of Brees gives them a pretty good offense.

2. It will energize a fan base that has grown weary of Brooks' antics since Brees is pretty much the diametric opposite of Brooks. Season ticket renewals have been strong and this should only help.

3. It gives them tremendous flexibility in the draft. I know most argue that it will be tough to find a trading partner, but Vince Young's antics IMO has further distanced Lineart from Young--increasing the value of the #2 pick. Now the Saints can trade down and still address needs on either their O-line or at LB.

i agree. as an added bonus, he also came cheaper than leinart in all likelihood.

Mike Detillier (local NFL 'expert') says the Mario Williams talk is all fluff and the Saints want to trade the pick. He didnt speculate who they want specific. He did say he has this guy Williams the highest since Peppers came out.

Makes sense. First, Mario might just be the 2nd best player in this draft. A lot of us like Leinart a lot, but Mario is better. Second, what do the Saints need now? AJ Hawk would be great, but no chance would they take him at 1.02. From a FF standpoint, as a Zach Hilton owner, I LOVE this signing. I'm not going to say Zach = Gates, but Brees is accostumed to looking for his TE. Hilton will be a damn good one. Again, not saying he's Gates, but he's pretty good.
