Isn't it possible that most of the players will actually want to play this game? Whether it's for Hamlin, or just because it's their life's work and probably more important to them than it is to us? I honestly am fine with any outcome , but I can see this as a possibility.
If any individual players want to sit out, let them and if that screws up any gambling/fantasy outcomes, so be it. Treat it like an injury and be done with it.

As soon as the first chest compression was done on that young man the players,coaches and probably the game officials knew there would no more football played last night.
It just had to filter up to The NFL office.
As for the game itself I agree with Godsbrother,it could be cancelled and both teams finish with a 16 game season,playoff seeding is based on win percentage,it'll sort itself out.
These athletes are resilient,give them a week and hope the news from the hospital is even a little encouraging and they'll be ready to play,to ask them to play in a day or two shouldn't even be on the table.

Agreed. It's easy for mouthy people on the internet to sit on their butts at home and say they should have done this or done that, but that was a situation unlike any we have ever seen in an NFL game. They likely all did the best they could, given the circumstances.

It was a tough call for the NFL from a business standpoint. We don't know what information they had or how fast medical updates were coming in. I'm assuming the people making the call to cancel the game were not at the stadium and being removed from the situation may not have portrayed the seriousness of the event.
I was late to tune in, so I'm not clear on the timeline of events immediately following his collapse or what was shown to the viewing audience.

Very true. You’re probably correct.My guess is simple inertia. I strongly doubt anyone in authority at the NFL issued a “let’s play on!” Instruction. Probably everybody was just watching in shock.good point. but why were they left with no directive from the NFL in the first place?The 5 minutes to warm up thing may just be the SOP the refs went with after a "normal" extended injury or other delay in a game occurs. This was not a normal injury or delay.
all they had to do was tell the refs the game was suspended until we tell you otherwise.
Just seems like there was a lack of leadership in the moment.
And I give all the credit to the two head coaches for the way they handled it.

It’s just an awful situation and I don’t see how the league could have handled it significantly better or what positive comes from me dissecting it. Absolutely no one was prepared for something that bad to happen and everyone did the best they could in the moment. Kills me that a 24 year old kid may never get a quality life back, hoping that’s not the case.
Right or wrong, I'm sure it took some time for NFL leadership to virtually gather, and to get accurate info about what was going on at the stadium. I'd be curious to know how many NFL people are "on call" and expected to be ready at a moments notice to discuss issues that arise in stadium. I'd assume there's a lead person on site at each game, but they might even be a team employee and not NFL.
We are such a desperate for information NOW society, I'd guess that the "5 minutes" came from someone freaking out in a TV truck who was trying to get whatever info they could find. I thought Joe Buck handled it pretty well at the start. There wasn't much to say other than this is rare, looks really serious, and we don't know any detail.
As for the game, it should be a no-contest and each team will simply have a 16 game season. If they lose out on a tiebreaker by a missed game, so be it. Can't give it a tie, they didn't tie. Can't give Cincy the win after only playing a few minutes.
If they really want to play the game, there's always the option to bump everything back a week. There is an open weekend between conference championships and the Super Bowl, so could move everything back a week and still play Super Bowl as scheduled.
I'm sure glad that I'm no longer a fantasy commissioner! Could be some awkward decisions to make regarding league title games. And league rules (or lack thereof) will be scrutinized.

I'm extremely biased here so everyone might want to completely discount my takes on this topic. But the more I think about, the more I think that trying to reschedule this game might be the worst possible solution. The Bills and Bengals both have playoff berths locked up. Neither team wants to squeeze a game in on a very short week at this point in the season. Speaking as a fan, if I was given the choice of (a) make up this game on Wednesday and push BUF-NE back to Monday and then play a playoff game probably the next weekend vs (b) take a forfeit and move on, I think (b) is in my team's best interests.
The Bengals can't possibly want to do this either. Both of us have meaningful games coming up in week 18, and then the playoffs. This is different than making up some random week 7 game during the pandemic. Aside from being a general headache, it's a player safety issue.

It's a lot easier to say if the #1 seed wasn't on the line. An extra week off and home field throughout is different than just being the 2 or 3 seed. Both teams have a legit chance at the 1 both having beaten KC. Buffalo especially.

I'm a Bills fan. I totally get this. I'm just trying to be clear-eyed about the situation.
If this had happened in a game between two teams that had already been eliminated, it would be easy because nobody would care that much how the league handles it. But the league's decision on how to handle this game affects Buffalo and Cincinnati directly, KC/NE/BAL indirectly, and also MIA/JAX some some degree. One or more of those teams is going to feel disadvantaged by whatever happens here.

I don't like the idea of awarding the victory to Cinci based on a 7-3 score after 1 quarter of football.
In that instance I would support just a 16 game schedule for the 2 teams, seems terrible to make that decision by the NFL

No right answer because some folks will feel like nothing can be done or moved forward.
I do think leagues have 2 real choices for FF this week
1. Week 18 Replay for the Championship, this would be the reason we use the last week of the NFL as basically a safety net or not the week we crown a winner for the season.
2. Just take the prize money for 1st and 2nd and split it, if it was winner take all, split it between the Final 2, nobody else in the league should be put off by this.
-You could have someone with a healthy lead but maybe the team trailing had guys like Higgins and Diggs last night or Josh Allen/Joe Burrow(that was me) and I can see some managers not liking the outcome from last night.
-I think either of the 2 scenarios above should likely be put to a league vote
-In some of my leagues, the Commish is competing in the Championship, that's a little more tricky

I wouldn't necessarily say this. Buffalo to Cincinnati direct flight is only like 1 hour 20 minutes, and the team was already planning to travel home after the game, the plane was already there. Trying to find ~100 (?) hotel rooms at 10 PM would be a logistical nightmare.....taking the players home made sense. My question is what happened with the equipment.....if they've taken all of the Bills equipment back to Buffalo, that may be a different story.

Both teams would be playing in relevant division games next week. I was just wondering why we couldn't just take the Bills and Bengal players stats from next week and plug them into the existing scores from this week. Certainly not without its own problems, but might work.

My guess is the game will be declared a tie. 9 minutes of football wasn’t enough played to say one team or another definitely would’ve won. The Bengals were up 7-3 but fat chance that score was going to stay that way. As others have mentioned, the logistics don’t favor a makeup game happening.
Hoping for some more positive developments with Hamlin’s condition. I’m not running a billion dollar business so thankfully I don’t have to worry about anything else. Just want this young man to survive and get his quality of life back.

This is my case. I was down 9 points at the time of the injury. My opponent has Higgins and I have Allen, Mixon and Chase. Most likely I was going to beat him but if they cancel the game I am not sure what I am going to do.
My preference is to just split the pot with my opponent and declare no Super Bowl winner for this season. The alternative is to use Week 18 for the Super Bowl but we purposely set up the league to have playoffs to end before the final game of the season.
At this point there is really nothing to do except wait to see what the NFL decides to do. Once that is known I'll discuss with my opponent and then make the final decision.

I do think it is notable that the language on NFL.com is 'postponed'. They could have used different terminology which was vaguer but they use 'postponed' several times. Just purely from a corporate perspective, they will really, really want to finish the game, but of course they will be mindful of the human tragedy that took place and the importance of handling this properly.

Generally speaking, in terms of concussions and other injuries, I agree. But from what I understand (standard disclaimer that I have no medical background) last night was just one of those freak occurrences where Hamlin happened to get hit in the chest at the exact wrong millisecond. It could just as easily have happened in a pickup soccer game or any of another million activities

He's projected to win by 1.
There's no money here. Just bragging rights. But that's a tough one.

Honestly, I like this solution. Whoever won this game would likely have had home field (relative to the other - not necessarily home field overall), so it would make sense as a no-contest. If there could be some way to ensure some kind of 50/50 ticket sales split between the teams and a reasonably equitable distance, that's a cool idea. Pittsburgh (4 hr 30 min from Cincinnati and 3 hr 30 min from Buffalo) or Cleveland (3 hr 45 min from Cincinnati and 3 hr from Buffalo) could work.

Im in agreement with those thinking it was an SOP thing after an extended injury thing...Im guessing Goodell was on the phone with many people and the refs were not exactly the first priority as well. The NFL and Goodell deserve a lot of criticism for a lot of things with the league...but not sure I see much last night to be critical of. People of course want all the information right away...and they wisely took their time getting all the facts, probably discussing things with multiple owners (not just Buffalo and Cincinnati), coaches, player reps and so on.

I think many will want to get back to doing it...some will have reservations about it. The critical point will be that first big hit where someone stays down and how it affects players. I would bet the NFL has a team of mental health professionals on call for every player and coach and is discussing ways to be ready for how everyone reacts. As all players are different and how people handle things are different. From young rookies who think themselves unbreakable...to vets who have seen a lot and may just be ready to walk away from it all.
