I think people don't want others influencing a person's draft choices. I feel what BnB said is fine regarding offensive lineman though...

So which argument are you trying to make? That the person drafting 6th should anchor their team around a future HoF'er at another position rather than settle for the 6th best QB? Or that he should take a QB, just not that QB?If it's the former, this is a discussion worth having. (Personally I'm taking J.J. Watt at 1.6 every single day of the week, assuming my top 4 QBs are off the board. But maybe that's me.)

No kidding. There have been several non-automatic picks thus far that could bring about similar debates. Why are we focusing on Flacco?So lets summarize by saying some people like Flacco more than others and that is why they may or may not have chosen to draft them at a certain point. Can we move onto another subject already? This thread has become like 6 pages of Joe Flacco with some picks mixed in between.

Keep in mind that I don't think any of these are bad picks (there haven't been any so far), but these surprised me:Rob Gronkowski. I, myself, was torn on where someone like this should go. He's obviously the best at his position and can contribute to a team in a number of ways. I briefly considered him when I was picking. TE, however, is a non-premium position and it's hard for me to say, "hey, Gronkowski is the guy I want to build my entire franchise around."Willis taken the last of the three 49ers LBs. I understand he's the oldest, but it's not like he's old. He's considered the best overall of the three (perhaps I'm mistaken here?) at this point in his career, and he is the one that is the foundation for the 49ers elite defense.Tannehill. I think he showed enough last year for the Dolphins to continue with him, but that's all I saw. Gronkowski could be an excellent pick for a run-focused team. Having a stud TE like him means you can come out in i-form and still have 3 legit receiving targets. Since this team likely won't have a great QB (so many were taken in round 1), this is probably a smart direction. I'd take TE1 over QB15.I don't think Willis is the best of the three anymore. His production has declined the last two seasons. Those are the years Navorro and Aldon have stepped up.I think Tannehill was a reach. I'm not really surprised that he went in the first round just as he did in Waldman's draft, but I don't necessarily think it's a smart pick. Tannehill started 16 games and only threw 12 TDS (and 13 ints). The upside is there, but taking him in the 1st really puts you behind the 8-ball.

As far as my pick of Tannehill, he was the last qb I was comfortable starting my franchise with. I was hoping romo would make it to me, but he didn't. I thought about taking another position, but with two teams picking twice before my next pick, I felt the drop off from Tannehill to the next qb was greater than the drop off at any other position. While Tannehill is unproven, he has all the attributes I want in a qb. He can make every throw, his athleticism is underrated, and I like his intangibles as well (which I think I am putting more stock in than others). Some will point to his 12 tds and 13 picks, but given the team around him last year, its honestly not that surprising. He had Reggie bush and Brian hartline as his weapons. I am very excited to see what he is capable of with a true number 1 wr and a competent pass catching te. Time will tell, but I am happy with him to start my team.

IMO taking either TE1 or QB15 in Round 1 is indicative of a fantasy player's mindset much more than an NFL GM's mindset. People will point to Round 1 of the RSP's draft, to which I'll respond that most of them are fantasy writers, too.I can think of at least 10 defensive players I'd rather build an actual (not fantasy) NFL team around than either Gronkowski or Tannehill.

I agree with everything you said here. I just feel like even in your post you make him sound like a complementary player rather than any kind of focus. I also agree with Mr. Irrelevant. The gap between Gronkowski and other TEs in fantasy is HUGE, but in reality I don't believe it is that large. There are many TEs who block well enough to line up for a run-oriented team but also catch well enough to be a legitimate second or third option.

I think a fantasy players mindset would be to wait on qb while an nfl gms mindset would be to acquire a qb because its the most important position on the field, so I can't say I agree with you there

First let me say this is a pretty entertaining off season thread. I wish I could participate but work would not allow it. I hope everyone can stay with it at least to a full starting roster.
I would have to agree that if real GMs were picking in this I think more QBs would be gone. To be able to draft a proven commodity out of thin air I think would tempt them to much, at least until the elite talent was gone. Teams struggle for years and decades just to find servicable QBs. Being able to just pick one would be to hard to pass up.

He was in the mix for me at 1.26. Ultimately I realized there is pretty good depth at LT and honestly I couldn't pick the best one. I think no question Thomas is the best pass blocker, but def not he best run blocker. But you do want your LT to be mostly a pass blocker so it's hard to argue with him being the first one taken.

Gronkowski is not a good pick. To much talent at the position which isn't a critical position. We've seen real GMs reach all the time for the possibility of a franchise QB. I'm not a fan of going interior line this early in the draft. Is there a particular reason you chose a Center? I know boards differ, but Mangold wasn't my top ranked center either.

Gronkowski can be used as both an elite receiver and as a sixth offensive lineman. He is the most complete TE in the game and is physically a freak of nature. He is almost impossible to cover in the red zone and I think is worthy of a late first round pick.

Marc Lillibridge is a former NFL scout for the Packers who is participating in Matt Waldman's writer's project. He mentioned he did an exercise like this each season for the Packers with his scouts. His first two picks were Duane Brown and Suh. Granted, his third pick was a QB but he still didn't go QB in the first two rounds and passed over some solid QBs in favor of OL/DL.

This was a tough decision for me. I could have gone any number of routes, offensive line, defensive line, rb, wr, but ultimately I went with a guy who I believe is a difference maker in two aspects of the game. He would have been my number 1 corner given his age and athletic ability, and that doesn't account for the impact he makes in the return game, where he can change a game instantly. I also felt the drop off at corner was much more steep than at other positions. Acquiring a shutdown corner, at age 22, who is also one of the most, if not the most explosive return men in the league, was too much to pass up.

I think Mangold's the best, and the Center captains the OLine. Having a strong center is important to me, especially since this team already has a tackle locked up. Part of the fun here is trying different strategies, of which the one that seemed best for me this late was to start with an OLine that will hopefully end up the best one in our little league.

After a few days, we should be past where they are at. I think we're going at a faster pace than they are. It could bias some of the selections early on though, but the middle/late is where teams really differentiate themselves from each other. The early rounds are pretty easy and obvious to do generally.

A. It is a shame he lost such a cool job!B. What is his draft position? After the elite talent is gone, let's just say ten elite qbs, then yeah I can see waiting on a QB. Before that I can't see not setting the most important position on the field for the even next three or four years, if you take an older QBs. I still think the group of QBs from 10 to 20 hold enough promise that GMs would be taking shots with them in the first round.

I think it's more timing than anything. I expected in this draft that Franchise QBs would go first, then impact defensive players and then stud LTs. I don't think his comment had anything to do with the sudden OL picks.

Yes he is drafting from the 26 spot. Makes perfect sense. In these that draft 18 qbs went in the first round, int his one 17 did. The names change but the number seems about right to me.

With the 5th Pick in Round 2. Baltimore selects QB Phillip Rivers.
I think the need for a good QB is essential in today's NFL. Rivers is able to throw for 3000 Yards any year and he was the last one that I like. Also, I think a change of scenery can do him good.
