Caitlin Clark vs Angel Reese - "Burning Heart" in the Desert (2 Viewers)

Sports is the one thing in life where people shouldn't be fooled by narrative. We have eyes. The idea that Clark is a result of this publicity i just don't buy. At all. I have eyes. Even back in high school this kid was amazing on the court. She continued to be amazing in college. She was amazing her first game back from injury. She is just an amazing and talented basketball player. The publicity came because of that not the other way around. Imo

I didn't watch Clark play girls HS basketball, didn't know much about her or any other WNBA player, I just don't watch women's sports

I had a stretch in life where Clark and Paige highschool highlights flooded my feeds. It was a dark time. Ha ha. Having said that, they were both super entertaining to watch even then. I also felt Paige was a better basketball player during that time. College Clark just took off.

Not sure why this one was locked but it was a rager.

Two similar threads were going on. Joe tried to merge them but couldn't, so he shut one down and asked SWC to start a new one. I think it made sense because SWC had shut his down already and Joe tried to . . . eh, heck if I know the full details here. But it wasn't shut down for any behavioral issue by the members of the board or anything like that.

i think leave tims be i have not been able to be here and i feel bad about not keeping up to date on the wnba thread if someone wants to run it i am aok with that and i am sure joehan would make the switch take that to the bank brochachos

I don't watch WNBA, but is Angel Reese as bad at basketball as these "highlight" reels make her out to be with all of the horrible misses and me-bounds? She literally looks like she is a bad player.

I mean....there was a very popular thread about Caitlin Clark that Tim started that hit several pages before launching a new one. She's been wildly popular in the FFA for a while now. I doubt anybody thought you were nuts for starting this thread; though some might wonder why we needed yet another one.
I didn't know about Tim's thread
My larger point is the league seems to be going out of their way to make Clark getting mugged in every game the center piece

There are fights every night in men's sports, maybe not all out brawls but it gets ferocious at times in the NHL, NBA with hard fouls, NFL with all kinds of crap going on at the bottom of the pile
Yet the leagues frown upon fights, you get suspended in the NFL if you hit someone in a boxing kind of way after the play is over.

Nobody is talking about how great the WNBA is, they're laughing at these ladies having cat fights all the time and then making sure it hits major news cycles or platforms
Most of these female athletes need the paycheck and the avg salary right now is maybe $100,000 which means the ones who ride the bench are making squa-doosh
You start suspending these players for long periods of time without pay that are causing the fights and you won't have these issues

But my guess is somewhere behind closed doors there are people who want this kind of controversy just to try and get the WNBA into mainstream
Again, feels more like GLOW than competitive basketball

They desperately want this league to be the 5th Major Sport in the country
As I said in the OP, the 2 main culprits that seem to dislike each other should just square off in a boxing match in the off season
Billy Jean played Bobby Riggs and its still largely discussed the most over her entire career...
Let's not kid ourselves that a boxing event or match would pay these 2 a lot more money than they will make over the next 4-5 years in the WNBA

WNBA is playing games right now in how they want to be perceived, I'm just getting down to brass tax on this because now Clark is taking on that role of the lamb
Just what they need, "Victims" playing in the WNBA

-GM, this is just my POV and I appreciate you speaking up, you're probably on the right side of this
I think I speak for many but that doesn't mean anything close to a majority, far from it

This is #1 among the most staged outcomes in the history of BS sports. The guy was 55 barely practicing and she was 29 in the prime of her career. I don't even know why people discuss it. It would be like John McEnroe playing Sabalenka today. He might be able to put up a fight, but he'd lose. Age matters. Gender matters all things being equal, but at some point age and practice matter more.
You seem really mad about this.
Well, he is correct.

Pre-injury Paige was a better all around player than Caitlin. She would have been more of a winning player. I’m willing to die on that hill, though post-injury it’s no longer a true debate.

No. She isn’t as bad as the noise would suggest. But she also is nowhere near the level of Clark, and they aren’t actual rivals.

Yep. I will say in today's mens and womens basketball culture, Clarks game hits the interest level a bit more the Paiges. For most of us older folks on this site, when we were alone with a rim we were driving to the basket to dunk or lay up. Maybe working on post moves. Today's kids, when alone with a rim, pull up from 5 ft behind the 3 pt line. Like Curry, this generation connects with Clarks skills on the court. Imo

My feeling is that Reese is one of those players whose work ethic greatly outranks her talent. She doesn't have a lot of talent in general, but she hustles, which is one reason why she gets a lot of rebounds. Her height and many missed shots from 2 feet away help in that regard lol, but no one will ever accuse her of loafing it on the court. My feeling is that she is more focused on building her brand and being a name than getting better at basketball. Playing basketball is a means to that end.

Reece is a baller. Big and tough. That's her talent. What her talent isn't is coordination. Her lack of coordination and horrible footwork combination is the reason we get these hilarious short clips of her that trend. She just isn't a player you build a franchise around, but appreciate what she brings. Think Rodman. Think Oakley. Think those two with a Chad Johnson like persona. Ha ha

This. She's big, willing to mix it up and has short area quickness that most bigs in the women game just dont have.

The bolded is absolutely right and honestly....how can you blame her? She can make significantly more money as an influencer/brand ambassador/"hot girl" (not my cup of tea, but plenty of people seem to find her attractive) than she'll ever make on the basketball court.

Being Clark's "rival" keeps her in the news and the off-court stuff she does will absolutely set her up better than any amount of Mikan drills she might need to become a respectable finisher inside. (which would be a LOT, because she's laughably bad at it now)

Ummm....I dont think you understand what a "baller" is.

Ballers have high basketball skill.

What Angel Reece is is a banger. Big, physical but unskilled.

100%. I like the term banger better. Adjustments will be made in my commentary moving forward. Mahalo

That was the point of the thread in a roundabout way my friend

I heard a great line about Angel Reese.....She leads the league in "mebounds"
That's pretty clever.

If you'd like to buy some Mebounds merch, just head on over to www.theangelreese.com .

Don't think the patent is pending yet, but it's been applied for.

Proceeds go to her foundation to help fight cyberbullying.
I don't think she gets the gist of what a "mebound" is based on those shirts. She's trying to turn it into "I own the boards" type sentiment. No, Angel, the point is you are such a bad shooter that half of your rebounds are because you can't make a layup and get the rebounds stats for rebounding your own missed layups. It's and insult to your poor skills as a basketball player, not a credit to your talent or effort.

Oh, I have no doubt that she gets it. She’s just trying to flip the script. I did think the trademark products were weird though.

Do you actually think she doesn't understand the "gist" of the term or is there some other point you're trying to make?

I don't watch it either but it does seem most all of the coverage is about how bad she is and her poor shooting, so I was surprised to see this morning that she's averaging a double-double and had a triple double last weekend. Her team kind of sucks though so maybe that has something to do with it.

I mean, never heard the term “me-bound” until Reese joined the WNBA. She misses basic put backs off her own rebounds, all the time. I’ve never seen anything like it.

But clearly she still has some skills or attributes, because she’s leading the league in rebounding.

I feel like maybe I'm the one missing something. It seems like you're suggesting that Angel Reese - the subject of the "mebounds" term and the person marketing it on her clothing line - doesn't understand what it really means but all us old guys on football message board are the enlightened who get it.

Well, I'm pretty sure the term was created by and primarily used by middle aged men, so yeah, I'm 100% certain I know what it means and Angel's attempt to redefine/spin it into something positive is as comical as her offensive skillset.

BTW, if there is any doubt that ESPN has an agenda with this, note that they tweeted two highlights from the Sky game yesterday while it was going, and one of them was the 3-pointer Reese hit (her only made field goal of the game). Her team got annihiliated and she had a bad game, but the one shot she made was worthy of being tweeted. Hilarious.

Open to interpretation I guess. I think she knows exactly what it means and is leaning into it. Even trying to make some money from it. Or just trying to flip the script on us "middle-aged men". I kind of respect her for that.

Yeah, if you're gonna be mocked, might as well try to make some money out of it

She's consistently shown that she's WAY too full of herself and takes herself WAY too seriously to be "in on the joke" at this point. Smart to try and pretend to try and stop the burners from using it as ammo every night but it's too late.

She’s sort of like LeBron…..if he wasn’t good at basketball

🤔 Perhaps, but I found those sports entertaining from a competitive angle. Men's tennis was great back then too, with McEnroe, Borg, Connors, Nastase, Ashe, Gerulaitis, Newcombe, etc,, then Aggasi. I don't watch either now. The personalities were a lot more interesting back then. Today's tennis is boring. It seemed as if points lasted longer back then. Now it's just power serves and it's over, especially for men. I think the evolving of the tennis racquets caused that.

Avg rally length per point is close to where it was 50 years ago and quite a bit higher then mid 80's through the 90's on all surfaces except clay

ETA: to be fair that's not broken down by men and women, but match length is higher now than it was in the past for both men and women, some of this could be contributed to more time between points perhaps, but Alcaraz and Sinner just played one of longest grand slam finals of all time.

Agreed. Tennis back in the day was entertaining. You forgot Sampras. Agassi took the world big storm. Your right about the personalities of the players back in the day. I also havent watched tennis in decades. Couldn't name a current player.

I left off Sampras because he was later at a time where men’s tennis had already become boring.

Sports is the one thing in life where where people shouldn't be fooled by narrative.
It’s obvious by your posts that you didn’t watch her and know basically nothing about her game and skills
Back in the 70s I loved watching women’s tennis and in the late 60s and early 70s I watched women’s roller derby every Sunday morning.
That makes sense. You had higher levels of testosterone back then. ;)

I held on a little longer I guess. The rivalrys between Sampras and Agassi/Becker were epic. They were also the conclusion of my tennis career and a fan. Ha ha

My favorite men’s tennis player was Bjorn Borg.

So you liked Agassi but didn’t like tennis when Sampras played. Even though they were contemporaries. Interesting.
