Those of you who have played fantasy football for over 10 years- was the discussion like this when Kurt Warner first started for the Rams? I keep thinking it must have been...
Warner was such a "feel good story" that people were less inclined to question him.Newton is
expected to be a great player. It's just that most people didn't expect him to be
this great, this soon.
I agree and disagree. Warner, people were picking him up off the waiver wire, didn't know who he was. But the 'feel good story' part was right, and this is the major difference between the discussion about Newton and Warner. I think people thought they caught lightning in a bottle, and went with it.
Because Newton is NOT a feel-good story. He was/is easy to hate. Seriously, how many people do you think subconsciously moved him down their rankings because his father was a money-grubbing DBag? Or they didn't like his freaking smile? Or the college hype? And those are bad reasons to think a player will fail in the NFL, which is populated by guys that were essentially mercenaries in college, took money, and couldn't care less about their alma mater, going to class, or being student athletes.
As for Newton being
expected to be great, I dunno. That was a pretty small bandwagon. Some pretty harsh stuff said about his pro prospects everywhere I looked. The worst tragedy of the offseason for the Panthers was Luck staying in school and the poor sad-sack Panthers being stuck with Newton. Maybe the least popular 1st rounder since Heyward-Bey.
I fully expect Newton to have rough patches, and have some terrible games, this season. Do I think he finishes as the #1 fantasy QB this year, or makes the Pro Bowl? No.
But man, I ain't gonna say he ISN'T going to do any of that. Even the believers expected the Pack to show the kid what the REAL NFL was like. One year of big-time college football! In a gimmick offense! And he comes in and does this? "Never done before". You don't get to use that phrase often, and you're using it for the kid's first two games.
He reminds me a bit of Cunningham. Not the blinding speed like Vick, just kind of gliding along, but getting places faster than other people, looking downfield. Can he put the ball in a spot between two defenders, like Brees? Not yet. But what's just as good, is buying time, and that receiver that was blanketed, is now wide open, and he doesn't need to thread the needle. So while he is learning to read defenses, and make smart decisions, he gets a larger margin for error, because defenses have to cover the receivers a second longer in the secondary.
The two things I like the most about him:
1. When he takes off, still looking to pass.
2. We haven't seen that rookie QB panic in the eyes. Looks real comfortable, it's pretty apparent the game isn't to big for him. Plays break down, and he sees opportunity, not a big hit coming.
