Tear what out? The shhetrock?Either get a steamer or tear it out completely.Could you be more specific? This is my first time doing a job like this.Steamer or tear out completely
It isnt my house it is my mother in laws. I was going to put plaster mesh over the walls and float over it to make a smooth surface to paintmr roboto said:Forget the steamer and just re-drywall the kitchen. Trust me it will be cheaper in the long run.
I cant because there are a lot of old poorly done patches and crumbled out sections I want to smooth overI was planning to put the stick mesh over the original wallpaper and putting a coat of plaster over that and the soffets and sand them smooth to paintjust paint over the wall paper then![]()
Nah. Shenhas her marbles. How old is your MIL? Can you get away with just telling her it's done?
I think its plaster but the soffet is sheetrock. So your plan is to frame mesh and plaster over sheet rock instead of tearing out sheet rock and putting new rock up? Is it plaster or sheet rock now?
She doesnt want me to do that. She wants me to do it the way I mentioned. I would be in over my head trying to shhetrock, especislly the soffet along the ceiling.Measure, cut, screw, tape spackle the screws and seams paint. It's a hell of a lot easier then what your were going to do![]()
I have the scorer for the 20yo paper but the ble goop is doing jothing for the ancient stuff on the plaster.Score the wallpaper. Steam. Score again after paper layer cones off
I'm saying score the old crap too. It helps the steamglI have the scorer for the 20yo paper but the ble goop is doing jothing for the ancient stuff on the plaster.Score the wallpaper. Steam. Score again after paper layer cones off
What does one have to do with the other? We dont know yet if I can float a wallIf you can float plaster smooth you are probably fine drywalling.
Either way, good luck.
because sheet rock requires you to skim coat the seamsWhat does one have to do with the other? If you can float plaster smooth you are probably fine drywalling.

She is the one buying the atuff at home depot ppl lI think you're underestimating the amount of work your chosen path will be. Lol at the MIL deciding how the work should be done. Floating a whole wall and soffit sounds easy. Fixing the crumbles, spackling and sanding probably three times to get it smooth enough to paint is a huge mess and a lot of work.
Yea but he's not gonna listen.Dude. If you tried your original idea of plastering the whole thing and sanding to smooth your arm would fall off from all the sanding. Hanging new drywall is significantly much easier.
This. Also 'floating' is really hard. The only people who say 'I'm gonna float that out' either know they can from years of experience or don't have a clue because they've never done it.because sheet rock requires you to skim coat the seamsWhat does one have to do with the other? If you can float plaster smooth you are probably fine drywalling.

When in doubt, rip it out. Works for me when remodeling. Drywall is easy. Sanding sucks balls.Yea but he's not gonna listen.Dude. It's kind of like soaking the walls but with older women. What does float the wall mean?
It is not entirely up to me. I suggested redoing the wall and she didnt go for itYea but he's not gonna listen.Dude. If you tried your original idea of plastering the whole thing and sanding to smooth your arm would fall off from all the sanding. Hanging new drywall is significantly much easier.
That may be but I am not making the decisions. You're in over your head. The correct move is to tear out and replace. You'll find out you are getting, and not taking, good advice.
I will do this. The cabinet doors will ve easy because I can take them off but the cabinet surface will be a pain because I have to stand on a ladder to do it.Stain the cabinets. While it's drying you'll have time to sand the floated wall.
I would think she wouldnt go for that. So far as I know she wants it smooth. She has not even picked out a color or stain yet.Have you thought about a texture on the walls instead of trying to get them perfectly smooth?

I am under no time frame fortunately

You need a friend with a truck.I should mention that I have no way to get a piece of sheetrock to the house. We carried all the supplies on the bus
