Can we discuss pet peeves here? (9 Viewers)

Internet ads. It is annoying enough to get a streaming ad covering up content. But in the last few days I am getting ads that autoplay audio content, always from Arby's and it is on several sites I visit. I need to let Arby's execs that I will stop going there as long as you are doing that.
I put the majority of the sites I visit on mute. There is literally no audio content I want from a website. if I wanna hear something, I will select it myself. Works wonders.
How do you put just a web site on mute? I’ll have issues sometimes where I’m playing music through headphones, and then click over to a website with some autoplay content that disables Apple Music or Spotify to play whatever ad.
I use google chrome so this is how it works for me. Left of the website address, in the address bar, there is a icon that looks like 2 o- stacked. Clicking that and selecting site settings, you can scroll down to sound, and select mute. Keep in mind this will mute it entirely. So if you wanna hear something from a website, you'll have to turn it back on.

Nice restaurants that have the most uncomfortable bar stools you could ever design.

I like to have drinks, people watch and eat at the bar…some of these places with fully wood bar stools with no padding whatsoever is ridiculous.

Or that the seat is so shallow you have to perch in it. Ugh.

Or the ones that are too deep and the backrest is at a 90 degree angle so there’s no way to sit back on it without it being a torture contraption. Or how about those ones with the backrest is about 5 inches tall, so if you forget and lean back, you’re on the floor.

Like don’t you want people to be comfortable and stay and order your drinks that you make 700% profit on?

was at a place this weekend that had seats which not only had a "back" that was... 4-6" tall.. but also had a forward lean and a rounded front edge.

like they want, at first glance, for it it to appear it's possible to sit and have a drink but they're actually making it impossible to sit even for a few seconds.

Not sure if it’s intentional, but I’d guess they don’t want you getting too comfortable, as this promotes more customers (temporarily) filling seats, while decreasing the likelihood a drunkard is able to fully get his drink on.

What it promotes for me is going elsewhere.

I’m sure there is a happy medium, where the chairs/stools are tolerable, but not super comfy.

Certainly not an expert though, as I’d be happy never to patronize a bar, or any stool-bearing establishment for that matter, ever again.

I’m referring to upscale Vegas restaurants where they serve $30 drinks. Why would they not want someone to be comfy and stay a while?
It’s a good question, but I bet not too many patrons buy multiple $30 drinks. Maybe a couple, on average? So from a profit perspective, establishments want seats comfortable enough to order those two drinks, but not so comfortable you’ll nurse them all night. They also don’t want people comfortable enough to get sloppy drunk.

I guess that theory is out the window if most patrons eat while seated on those same stools.

Why do you think the seats are uncomfortable?

It’s usually because the place hires some designer that’s never worked a day in the service industry, nor spent many an hour at a bar. The functionality behind the bar is often terrible for this reason as well. Same for kitchens. I have a friend who has gotten quite wealthy as a kitchen designer for restaurants specifically. He’s actually good at and is a former chef.

80% of Vegas bars is strictly about look vibe. Hey this bicycle with no seat bar stool really goes with our X games themed bar. Oh this 6" wide stool really sets off our upscale look and sleek modern design here at Thurston Howells inside the Wynn

This.

Kinda referenced it earlier…all wood and no padding anywhere. Seat too deep or too shallow. The backrest at a 90 degree angle. Or the backrest is about 5 inches tall so no way to lean back on it.
Oh sorry, I wasn't intending to clarify what makes them uncomfortable. I was wondering why you thought they were designed that way?

Apparently the answer: form is prioritized over function. I can buy that, though why is regular seating in upscale restaurants not as likely to be uncomfortable? Doesn't "the look" matter throughout an establishment?

What?

I'm not sure that's true.
I’ve eaten at a lot of nice restaurants, and uncomfortable seats are seldom a problem. But even as a non-drinker, I recognize bar seating sucks.
We went to this upscale place. Seating ranged from bad to annoying. I wouldn't go back.

The photos on Yelp show the too shallow bar stools and the too shallow restaurant chairs. So much for a relaxing birthday dinner.

Worst bar seats are ones that are affixed and can not be moved around
We had these when I was in elementary school. Yuck. Not the vibe I want at a bar.
What bar did you go to in elementary school ?
It was the South SIde of Chicago. Bad Leroy Brown was a regular.
Baddest man in the whole damned town.
My money is on Willie McCoy.

I think the only real answer was noted earlier that designers just think they look good. I'm going to make it a point to chat to managers moving forward to just try and understand it and put in a friendly piece of feedback for them.

What?
Not sure what is unclear. To restate: bars frequently have uncomfortable stools/seats, restaurants (in my experience) don’t. They both have an ambiance to create, and want to maximize profit, so why are bars designed without comfort in mind?

I'm not saying it’s impossible for upscale restaurants to have cr@ppy seats, but it’s ubiquitous in bars. As both serve food and beverage, while catering to similar clientele, why the difference?

I think you’re confused on what we’re talking about here…we’re talking about nice restaurants….most nice restaurants have bars inside them. The bar stools inside most of those nice restaurants are uncomfortable, while the seats at the restaurant tables are comfortable. The pet peeve is why can't these nice restaurants get some bar stools that have some damn padding on them?

In the case I gave, both bar and restaurant seats were horrid. No reason. Just bad.

I understand. I think those restaurants don’t want people hanging out at the bar too long.

Managers will have had zero input on the choice of seating. They will agree with you and then go hit their vape with of a mix of despair, hopelessness and anger. Because you’re right.

Because the designer the owners hired said that the bar needs to be the show piece of the restaurant and those chairs really pop.

My wife thinks cabbage and lettuce are interchangable.
So weird. Was just subjected last night to a facetime conversation between my wife and MIL (I'm sure I posted that pet peeve in here some time ago) where MIL was laughing/complaining that she had FIL pick up a few groceries for her and he got most of them wrong, including getting a head of cabbage when she asked for lettuce.
