Capella's 24-hour, VERY bigly OH MY GOD HOW DID WE GET HERE thread (8 Viewers)

Listen to them about what?
The Affordable Care Act for one.  They didn't want it and that issue more than any other has driven a lot of traffic.  It was shoved down the throats of the general population with no say and no input.

Abortion laws is also a very big deal.  These people don't understand why the best alternative to having a baby in poverty is to kill it.  People who have 5+ children and can raise them all well through hard work despite being very tight financially.  People who have their lives crushed and their hearts broken by miscarriages can't fathom why people think it is perfectly acceptable to kill the baby on purpose.  This issue is not settled and to continually act like they just need to shut up and accept it does not go over well.

I'm sure there are others, but those are 2 very big ones that come to mind.  This election was more about the arrogance of the left than the racism of the right.

I would not assume that this election was in any way a referendum on abortion. I think you'll be very disappointed in the results if you do. This was all jobs and anti-establishment.

Really?  When people complain that the economic recovery has been terribly weak and not nearly created enough good paying jobs for the average person, you aren't hearing that?  The democrats do nothing to help them and just claim things are great.  Trump walks in and says he can fix the problem by reworking trade deals and the great lakes region votes him into office?

You STILL aren't hearing the message?
And this.  The economy isn't all roses and sunshine like them Dems were trying to paint so that it would boost Hillary's chances.

I live in an area where the economy is doing well, but other areas...like Pennsylvania, Ohio & Michigan, things aren't going as well and reality beats governmental reports every day of the week.

Maybe, just maybe, the DNC will see what a corrupt pit it has become and clean it out.  And maybe they'll figure out that yuppies in San Fran aren't representative of their electorate.  If they figure those two simple things out we'll be saying hi to President Booker next time around.  If not who knows.

The only real victory last night was for our constitutional principles - SCOTUS should stay a bit on the side of judges who respect that document.  That's a good thing.

If Republicans make this about abortion, gays, or any other issue involving Jesus, I'm going to lose my mind.

Yeah, Dems, keep calling the Trump voters racists and uneducated.  That seems to be working out well for you.

Listened to an African-American female author on the radio and she just doubled down with her head in the sand as to how this happened.

It's not that people are racist and it's not that they are stupid, they are pissed off that they are being painted to be the bad guy and the thing that's wrong in this country.  I live with these people and I'm telling you, they respect others and they care about people, especially their families, and they work DAMN HARD.  Like every day without fail, they get up and go to work and try to do their best.  To then go home sit in front of the TV and be told they are stupid and racist and not even worth a voice in the government was not resonating very well.  They have been motivated by the insults more than racism.  These people own guns and have a crap ton of pride in themselves and their lives.

I work with and around a lot of very successful people that fall into the "uneducated" white voters category.  They aren't stupid rednecks.  They are successful American citizens and they voted because, guess what, it is their right and they earned it.  We had all better listen to them or things will get worse.
I think I heard that same radio interview.  NPR, right?  Sadly, that may keep me from bothering to watch her show, Empire.  If it was the same interview, it was really sad to me and enervating when she doubled down on the angle that America is still extremely racist and Trump won because of 8 years of a black President.  I hope that narrative dies quickly.

Everyone knew white blue collar men were going to support Trump.  If dems want to blame a group, blame the ~45% of college educated women who voted Trump.  Or the ~27% of Latinos who voted Trump.  Those two were way ahead of expectations and were probably the difference.  Why did they vote that way?  Start with the DNC rigging the primary.

Man, the best part of today is:

1. No more political direct mail pieces in my mail box.

2. No more political ads on TV.

3. No more canvassers blanketing my neighborhood with political junk.

A good day. :banned:

The Democrats did not disagree that there are people in the country that are hurting.  They disagree with Republicans about how best to fix those problems.

If the message is that most people are economic illiterates, then sure.

I don't think it was a huge difference maker, but there are a lot of single issue voters on this issue.  Enough to matter in a race like this.

Her unlikability did her in. Biden should have ran.
I dislike her plenty but probably not as much as the next guy. I wonder how much of the dislike has been manufactured over three decades and how much is deserved. As always I suspect there's some split on the answer, some thinking it was practically all manufactured and some thinking it was all deserved. I don't know. I have a headache. I drank too much.

President Trump.  Let that resonate while you make your next snarky response.

People don't give a crap about stats when it doesn't match what they see in their lives.
It's two separate ideas. Trump voters have correctly recognized they are getting screwed. But they aren't smart enough to figure out who is responsible for it.

Sound training and education for life, after all, in life, and if they are working in the financial world at all, they will find out that when world events are unpredictable that there is a time out given.  I mean its not as if people then become concerned with their finances and seek to move their money around.  Great decision.

Oh, Yale, keep having tuition massively outpace inflation while teaching your students that they do not have to deal with reality.  In another 20 years with that trend you will be less relevant than the University of Pheonix..  Fantasy, avoidance, and irrational pricing are a sound business model, at least I presume in your teachings.

They are still economic illiterates if they think Trump's stupid positions on trade and well, everything else, are going to make a difference. (I'd say the same thing if Sanders had been the Democratic candidate and won.)

They are almost as dumb as Evangelicals who voted for somebody with the character of Trump.

Do you even realize what an arrogant ### you are?

I told people over and over Clinton was a lousy candidate. They always came back with stuff about how the perception wasn't deserved. Who ####### cares if it is deserved or not? It was simply reality that she suffered from too many negatives in terms of perception and likeability.

She must have been the least liked major party candidate ever, since she lost to the guy that most people considered the least liked.

So I guess this election is only going to emboldened the alt-right eh? i mean, Trump ran an overtly racist campaign - and won. Why should the Republicans care about minorities at all?

He also is openly hostile/abusive to women. He won. Why should Republicans care about women at all?

For those of us who did not like the direction of the Republican party, this election is only going to make it worse.
The Republican Party stagnates at their own peril. What worked in 2016 isn't going to work in 2020, 2024, etc. Any political party has to continuously evolve -- running a Trump-style campaign is not and will not be the magic strategy forevermore.

This is the exact conversation I had with my wife this morning.

Time and time again, democrats cast more votes and get less representation in government than republicans. It's a hill we have to climb. It's not going to get any easier.
What in God's name are you talking about? 16 of the last 24 years it has been the Democrats show.

Get over it.

Apparently the only strategy needed is to say things suck currently and energize working class people.

Me too and she gets mad and starts quoting Hillary's experience and all the bad stuff Trump has said.  Living in an ivory tower has its downside it appears.  Loss of touch with reality being primary among them.

Whites sick of the PC culture.  So what does Clinton focus on?  Trump's un-PC behavior.

She should have copied the Obama playbook used on Romney.

"Trump pays no taxes and his biggest idea is to cut taxes on the rich.  He refuses to release his tax returns.  Even Romney did that."
