CB/WR Travis Hunter, JAX (1 Viewer)

Underdog NFL
Davante Adams on Travis Hunter playing both offense and defense, via @thepivot:

"I don't even think it's possible to do, for real. Not at a high level. … That's just a lot of mileage, man. I'm not even concerned so much if he can do it over the course of a game or a season. It's more like, how long is his career going to be if he's playing that many snaps? All you're doing is doubling your risk for injury, one, and I don't wish any of that on him. I hope that he can play an injury-free season and go ball out. But it's just the reality. The more you're on the field. It's already a 100% injury guarantee. Once you get out there playing both sides, now you have to tackle. You got to tackle Derrick Henry with that frame."

80 percent of offensive snaps per Coen; interesting:

I think he has WR 1 upside if true.
No reason whatsoever he shouldn't be a top-4 dynasty pick, and a top-25 redraft WR. I'd actually be surprised if he saw more defensive snaps than your average dime CB.
I’ll give one reason: there is a decent chance that at some point he turns into a full-time (or nearly so) defender. Then his fantasy value would be near zero. That’s a factor no other rookie pick brings. I think the coaches will eventually put him primarily on one side of the ball.

Not sure what qualifies as "decent", but I feel like those odds are pretty low. (I mean with some sort of time stipulation. If he plays mostly as WR over a career of nine years, but during his seventh year they try him as exclusively defense for half the year, that wouldn't qualify the proposition as true in my book.)

But of course, any chance is a risk, and like you're saying, a risk that the other rookies don't carry. It's a knock, but in my opinion not a substantial one currently.

All signs are pointing to Hunter being more or less a full-time WR, but can’t rule out the risk that the Jags suffer some big injuries and/or underperformance at the CB position and they ask him to shift there at the expense of WR snaps. Whether that is short-term or long-term could depend on how well he does on the defensive side of the ball at this level.

It's going to be fascinating to watch this play out. The coaches have to know they are going to get criticized no matter how they use Hunter.
Hadn't even thought about that, but yeah. People do have a tendency to take small, specific examples and blow them out of proportion. I can see a lot of that in the future for this situation. He scores a touchdown on offense, and then later in the same game on defense loses a guy in coverage and gives up a game-changing touchdown. "What are these clowns doing, can't they see how good he is as a WR?" etc...

welcome to the NFL kid

Kaleb Johnson rushed eight times for 20 yards and caught 1-of-1 targets for six yards in the Steelers’ preseason Week 1 game against the Jaguars.
Johnson got the start with Jaylen Warren absent. His highlight of the day occurred on a second-and-three counter, when he stiff-armed Travis Hunter into the turf as he turned upfield to pick up the first down. It was a good showing for the rookie running back.

They traded a load to draft Hunter the WR (and looking at the depth chart they need him at WR), allowing him to do CB is simply to make him happy; its not going to last long... I think the next couple of yrs is when he will do it the most but has he gets older it will get phased out; especially once he gets paid big boy money and or get injuries.

Now everyone concerned about the defense usage is valid because more time on the field means more chance of injury and he could fail as a WR which I think is highly unlikely. If your scared to take him and want Henderson instead after his performance... I wouldn't blame anyone

Well this was in response to Coen saying he will be in on 80% of offensive snaps.

Honestly, I think I believe Coen. I'm also encouraged at how much slot usage Hunter got (I was expecting mostly Thomas there) given Lawrence's success rate with Kirk/Engram, and Coen's usage of Godwin last year.
