CBS Sportsline GURU Projections (1 Viewer)

For anyone familiar with CBSSportline, how are their "GURU Projections" calculated. I can never really see any rhyme or reason to them. Is there some algorithm, does somebody just make them up, or what?

For this season, the "Guru" seems to take projected stats for the week and convert them to your scoring and give a projected scoring. They even project how many touchdowns someone is going to score and use that for the weekly projections. It is horrible and should be ignored.

In year's past, it seemed to better and more of an algorithm-based calculation. Now it just seems like someone is pulling stats out of a hat.

They actually make projections for what they think each player will get.. yardage, TD's, receptions.. and then translate it into fantasy points. I think it would be better if they gave say.. 0.6 TD's for a projection, or 1.2 TD's instead of whole numbers, they'd probably get a lot closer. Their GURU points though don't seem to always follow their rankings which I don't get.

Thanks guys...this is helpful.

Yes, I have been ignoring the Guru, as I just kind of keep up with football and start whoever I think will do best. I was just curious.

Thanks again for the info!

it seems like the guru is a little different this year. in years past, the projections seemed to usually be very close to a player's weekly ff points average. this year, there seems to be a much bigger variance. the projections this year can be helpful by pointing out good or bad matchups, but it can also be silly trying to predict td's. i agree with an above poster that said using fractional td's would be better than all or nothing. injuries are also often a big factor on the guru's projections. in the end, any projection is only a tool that can be useful, but is obviously far from gospel.

If I could disable this feature I would in a heartbeat.
:thumbdown:In our league, we use the guru line on each game as a wagering line, so in addition to playing FF, you can make money by betting on your own team against your opponent that week. Win enough side bets with those crazy spreads, and you're playing the season for free.

How is what the Guru does different than what FBGs do? They take their projections, TDs and all, and apply them to a scoring system that appies to you. FBGs just takes human projections and runs them through a simulator a 100 or so times to get their rankings, which I think is actually worse. The problem is not the system, its the actual human projections you don't agree with. This week, according to the GURU, i should bench Jacobs for Hightower. I don't agree but it is what it is. It seems that you just don't like the guru because they disagree with OUR opinions. If they consistently matched your thoughts,I'd guess you'd love the guru. I take it for what it is. I like seeing how I match up. I just don't always agree with their projections.

It is awful and there is no rhyme or reason to it whatsoever. I dont even think they do projections. For example, I have the Bears DEF and I remember they had a big week 1 game. I think they scored 30+ points that game because of a TD and such. So they projected them to have 36 POINTS in week 2, which is absurd. I think they do some funky average thing based on previous games.

Another example was with Pierre Thomas. I was stuck with him a few weeks ago and they projected him to have -.7 points. Yes, negative points. Probably based on the fact that he had 1 rush yard the week before. Not sure why they would project a fumble though (we dont even give negative points for negative yards).

As for the discrepancy between guru's projections and weekly rankings, here's their explanation from the top of the rankings page.

"We invite you to compare these rankings versus our player projections. While you'll surely notice discrepancies between the two, we like to think of our player rankings as a "safer" view of who's worth starting and who's not. Remember, the projections are an estimation based on a three-week average as well as the matchup, while the rankings take into consideration the basic question in Fantasy Football: Who is the better guy to start?"

Actually I think FBG says something similar like they might rank player A higher than player B in a given week based on matchups, etc., but don't bench player B in favor of player A if player A is Adrian Peterson. You kind of have to weigh out the risk/reward yourself each week based on your team and opponent.

Since FBG's projections are better, their rankings are better. If you know the guru sux but your league mates don't, that's an advantage. If you're in a public league playing against random people you don't know, they are probably relying on the guru. If you're in a premium league, all your league probably mates already knew to ignore the guru.
