**** Chargers Interminable Thread - Because No One Demanded It **** (2 Viewers)

Too early for conclusions but it looks as if the coaching and FO changes were dramatic upgrades. The past decade has been full of talented teams underachieving, finding ways to lose close games, often in unconventional ways. This team feels very, very different. Doing the basic things extremely well and facing the opponent to beat us, as opposed to finding ways to snag defeat from the jaws of victory.
Seemingly minor tweaks, like trading for Molden, turn out to make a difference. I was concerned about Gilman being out, but there was Molden making plays. Granted it was the Panthers, but still, it's a positive change from how the previous group did things.
Yep. And Molden's ability to play both corner & safety is so key from a roster standpoint.

Joe Alt was a home run pick at 5. Immediately dominant.

Looks like Herbert will be playing on a sprained ankle this week. I'd expect low score, probably another very low pass attempt game (unless the D is giving up a lot of points).

Herbert didn't practice today. Neither did Colson, Dupree, Taylor or Palmer. Speculation is Palmer's elbow is causing him problems.

Gilman practiced.

Chargers worked out punter Michael Palardy this week. Scott has definitely been disappointing these first two games, far off his excellent seasons past. Hopefully he can turn it around, its not so easy to find a good punter. Another example of Hortiz not satisfied to stick with someone who's not measuring up.

Herbert will be a game time decision. I figured this and next week would be likely losses before, if he can't go I don't see them winning. If he does go he'll be pretty immobile with a high ankle sprain. The offensive line would have to be near immaculate to make it work against a very tough defense.

All that to say, I'm expecting an L this week unless crazy stuff happens.

For FF purposes, as much as they were emphasizing the run before, they might have the most rushing attempts in a game since Tomlinson left. Start your Charger RBs, sit your Charger WRs and TEs. I wonder if they'll have Vidal active this week.

:poop:. :tfp: looks like an ugly game on tap. Good time to fire up your smokers and get those ribs and briskets (night before) going. Gonna be a long 3 hours (ish).

Herbert's starting. really need the interior offensive line to hold up their end of the deal

Palmer is out, Rice is active. Probably not the greatest game for a debut in terms of opportunity. Vidal inactive again, are they working on him contributing on special teams?

Why do I keep rooting for this sad sack franchise?
Terrible showing. I take back my praise of the coaching staff.
Yeah, they sucked it. But all the injuries, again, that's more than losing just a game. I figured next week is a loss anyway, so if they're smart they sit anybody who is questionable or worse and treat it as another preseason game. Then see what they have left after the bye. They try to push through next week, they could put the whole season in jeopardy, if it isn't already.

Herbert should have sat today. Bosa too for that matter. And their adjustment to help out Alt blew up in their face.

Derwin James, as good as he is, makes more bad decisions than almost any star defender I've ever seen.

ETA, Dobbins still looking pretty good. Johnston too.

Slater has a strained pectoral, Alt has a sprained MCL. Both expected to "miss some time" - not sure how much yet, but they're almost certainly not playing in week 4. It would be criminal negligence to run Herbert out there again this week even if technically cleared to play.

I hope Heineke has excellent insurance policies.

Derwin James suspended for this upcoming game for “repeated violations of playing rules intended to protect the health and safety of players.”

Going to be a great game Sunday. Hello 2-2.

Frankly he should be. He’s got to get his **** together. The other players must hate him.

I think he had another helmet to helmet hit in the first quarter that wasn't flagged as well. on the one hand this is who he is and how he plays. On the other hand it is dangerous and he needs to learn from this. I doubt he changes though.

I was not in favor of giving him the big contract, due to how often he had missed games up to that point combined with the poor positional value for the safety position. I wasn't even thinking at the time about penalties and suspensions, but now we can add that to the mix. I think they should get out of his contract at the first reasonable opportunity.

In today's NFL, if you are going to pay a DB a top of market contract, it should be an elite corner, not an elite safety... and IMO it is fair to question whether James is actually elite. The only year of his career that he played up to his current contract was his rookie year.

I was up and down on Herbert Sunday. I definitely went into the game thinking he should sit. Was pissed as I thought it was short sided to let him play. Then I thought OK I guess I was wrong because he's actually playing his best game of the year. Then he gets hurt and pissed again. I think the frequency of injury is officially a concern. Dude just cannot stay healthy.

Yeah I agree. He definitely makes some big plays, but I often wonder how many of his gambles lead to big plays for the offense. And it sure seems like so many of his personal fouls are on 3rd down. I agree he's not worth the big money.

I don't think he's exceptionally brittle the way some guys are. He's getting hit too often. Part of that is on him needing to learn to give up on plays and protect himself. More of it is on inadequate blocking. That has to change, its the single biggest issue for this team.

My kids think that me screaming "get rid of it!" every passing play is normal football lingo.

They've signed WR/Returner Jalen Reagor and LB Blake Lynch to the practice squad. Hopefully Reagor does better for Harbaugh than he did for Daenerys, getting skewered by a bolt shot from a boat is such a rookie mistake.

There's some feeling that this move is a response to Davis not being lights out in the return game.

I find myself wondering why they're not signing offensive linemen instead. They're down 2 starting tackles, they may need to stash some warm bodies here.

Pipkins is now questionable with a foot injury. They'll be missing 2 likely 3 of the 5 starting offensive linemen Sunday.

There's no way they should allow Herbert to play.

Good news everyone! One of the Spanoses sold their 27% stake of ownership of the Chargers!

Bad news everyone! She sold it to the current owner of the Detroit Pistons.

Bosa, Slater, James out. Alt, Herbert and all the CBs questionable.

I just want to go on the record here to say that I think Herbert should play, based on what I have seen reported.

I assume doctors have cleared him, and he wants to play.

Harbaugh is trying to build a warrior culture. If his QB can play and doesn't, it doesn't help with that.

More importantly, IMO it does not make sense to concede a division game to KC. They need to go out and compete... KC is beatable. I realize they have other injured players out, but this is the job.

I understand that the OL injuries will make it much more difficult to win, but I think they have to do the best they can to win... which means Herbert plays.

Totally disagree. What's the goal here? They aren't winning a super bowl this season - the roster isn't good enough. So they shouldn't risk long term damage to Herbert behind a crummy line in a game you're not going to win regardless of whether Herbert plays or not. And ultimately, this one loss isn't going to make or break this season. It's a flat out stupid decision and a stupid approach. If that's the warrior culture, warriors are idiots.

Who says they are risking "long term damage" to Herbert if he plays? He has a sprained ankle. How does playing on it cause "long term damage"?

Could it possibly worsen the ankle and lead to him missing a game after the bye? Maybe. But your point is essentially that it's okay if he misses a game since you are viewing this season as a rebuild.

I can assure you that Herbert and the team know a lot more about the injury and the associated risks than you do.

What is the goal here? The goal is win games and make the playoffs. Harbaugh and Hortiz said that, and they have yet to say anything they have not followed through on as far as I know.

I'll agree to disagree with you and thank you not to characterize me as stupid.

How does playing on it cause "long term damage?" Because he'll be immobile behind a crummy offensive line against a really good pass rush. It's going on 2 years now he's been constantly hurt because he's getting hit too often. They're setting themselves up for more of it. If the goal is to make the playoffs, you slough this game so you can give your QB more time to heal up for the rest of the season.

They "knew more than me" last week too - how'd that go?

I didn't call you stupid, I called the decision to have him play stupid.

Obviously, they are giving guys who truly shouldn't try to play through injuries the game off: Slater, Alt, Bosa, Colson, Leonard, Taylor. Herbert has said the ankle felt better throughout this week than it did throughout last week. The team obviously thinks he can play without significant risk, and he wants to play, so he should play.

They "knew more than me" last week too - how'd that go?

They were tied on the road against the league's best defense with 147 yards of offense with Herbert. He reaggravated it and left the game, and the offense gained 19 total yards in 3 drives the rest of the way. With him, they had a shot to win. Without him, they didn't. Again, they are trying to win. And there was no additional "long term damage."

Of course there was, he re-aggravated the sprain making it a struggle for him this week.

And let me just say, I'm glad you weren't in charge of whether or not to concede the game.

They take the predictable L, Herbert should have sat, gotten 3 straight weeks to heal up, instead he got hit 10 times behind a garbage line. The offense was terrible, one good drive then nothing. Good news is he doesn't seem to have gotten new injuries. 179 yards and one TD, maybe Heineke does worse, but ultimately Herbert didn't win the game.

Stupid to play him.

They had a chance to win. That would not have been true without Herbert.

If the Palmer spot was officiated correctly, they might have won. It was that close.

The Chargers know right now that they can play with any team in the NFL with Herbert. Even in the first Hortiz/Harbaugh year, without having gotten the roster where they want it. Even missing 4 first round pick starters. This matters.

It absolutely was not stupid to play him.

That said, I'm moving on.

This game today is only one game, but it feels like a big difference to get to 3-2 vs. 2-3. A win today and I think the Chargers have a great shot at 10 wins and a playoff spot.

Careful. you know what hope and optimism leads to when you are a Chargers fan, right?

Samuel also on IR. Bosa and Taylor out. Short on DBs again. But, the starting offensive line will be out there. I hope the lean more toward a Herbert/passing game today, but Denver's interior pass rush is very good.

Right now it looks like Bosa's 2025 cap hit would be $36,471,667. Arg.

I am a huge Herbert fan. If he is feeling better and his line protects him he can win this game for the Bolts. No doubt.
