Chess Tournament 2025- Round 4 Pairings posted (1 Viewer)

@Juxtatarot looking forward to playing again. I'm slammed at work all day today but should have good time over the weekend to play. Looks like you're white so I'll await your invite but likely won't accept until tonight.

Well crap. Ragincajun and I are 22 moves in. I just assumed I was supposed to be white because he invited me and I was white. So should we just finish the game as is or start a new one where he is white and I am black?

No it’s OK I will reverse it. It’s early rounds so it won’t matter. Keep playing.

Dez and I are pretty close to done. I have him in zugzwang currently - turn 35 or so and I managed a position with pawns and one knight to completely block his king from my half of the board.

I wanted to write this post just so I could say zugzwang. Such a cool word.

I used this term in a court filing a few months back asking a judge to change her orders. While the judge still didn't do what I wanted and probably didn't enjoy me calling her out for putting my client in an impossible position, she got a kick out of the term.

Sand has this game wrapped up, I'm just prolonging my agony.

It's been a good one. Some really tricky positions at the end here.

I'm not sure if this was posted anywhere in these chess tournament threads, but curious what everyone's ratings are here? are 1200 ranked players playing 1800 ranked players? I haven't played in years and am sure i'd be horribly rusty, but more curious how good people are in these FBGs contests.

I don’t think most of the people here have played enough to have accurate ratings. Certainly the Chess Time ratings aren’t accurate.

I’m probably in the 1500-1600 range. Sometimes I play good enough to be competitive above 1800, but never consistently; I’m too impatient and make too many mistakes. Anybody above 2000 is going to beat me 9 out of 10 times (and that 10% estimate is probably optimistic.)

We are all on chess time and I don't know how that translates to like official ELO but on chess time players range from beginning to 1700s (unless Tim jumped above that). .

Yeah I've been told chess time ratings are pretty much meaningless.

I may need to figure it out because I got asked to play in some official tournaments in my area (I was helping coach my son's chess club for awhile and got to know some of the guys who play regularly and then invited me to play).

i go anywhere between 1650 and 1750 on lichess playing mainly speed games.

Sand beats Dez in slugfest. Dez made one mistake and other than that the post game analysis showed both played a very good game.

Was curious what people thought of the online rankings and their accuracy. After seeing this thread, kind of wants to get me back to playing a few games. Good for the aging mind I think. It’s probably been 10 years since regular play for me.

Pav defeats ragincajun. It was a close game until I managed to snag his queen, then it was pretty much over.

Woz and Cranks agreed to a draw after it appeared very likely that he could perpetually check me and I couldn't stop it. Will review further, but I think I miscalculated when I decided to short castle into his half-open H file.

ETA: Used that lichess analysis thing Sand had linked. Seems like castling was fine - though it gave you a route to attack for sure - but my Queen to g5 was a mistake. Apparently kg2 was the best move but I recall only looking at that briefly and worried that it would let you bring queen to h5 and mate me by stacking the h file. Not immediately clear to me how I maintain an advantage with kg2 but the numbers say that was the play.

My game with @BlackCrowes ended in a draw. I was a pawn up but it was a fluid rook pawn endgame (with two rooks left on each side) and I am not so good at those. Also despite the pawn advantage I was locked in a passive position. So I’m happy with the result. Tough game.

Juxt and I are 30 moves in. I am hanging on by my fingertips. I think it's fairly even at this point, but dang this is super complicated.

I'm any case, I haven't blundered yet against a much superior opponent, so major victory!
