***Chicago Bears Thread*** Ben Johnson hired. The Resurrection Begins! (7 Viewers)

I've really been wanting them to build the OL early in the draft this year, but the drop-off from Jones to a guy they could get at 9 seems much less than the drop-off from whoever their #2 WR is to whoever is sitting there at pick 9. They don't even have any WRs after Moore.

Do y'all have any concern with re-signing players in 4-5 years? Or is it pretty much "we'd like to have a good problem" like that?

Make no mistake. Poles will choose best player available at the #9 position if they choose not to trade down. With all the QB buzz, that could be Joe Alt or Odunze/Nabers. Alt would be an immediate upgrade at LT and Jones would make a reallly, really good swing tackle. That along with drafting an OC in the 2nd or 3rd (or signing a high profile FA...which Bates is not) would go a long way to making the OL a top 5 squad.

I get the feeling the Bears will trade down from 9. We only have 5 picks this draft. I can't imagine they are happy with that.

It also bugs me the Bills just released their starting center, Morse, and thought so little of their backup Center they traded him for a 5th rounder.

Best thing for that would be if McCarthy is still available at 9. Prime trade out territory there.

Unless Nabers, Alt, or Odunze are there. If they're gone and McCarthy is still hanging around, it's a definite trade down. I don't see any elite defensive guys to take there who are must haves.

I agree. There are five or so defensive guys I'd be ok with getting (plus a few o lineman) so a trade to 15ish would be ok by me.

Dallas Turner is very intriguing.

Id be ok with Turner at #9, but would prefer a trade down and focus on OL or WR. It really just depends on how the draft runs and I think Poles has done a pretty good job of adapting to the egg and flow of the draft.

And see how FA goes. Seems like it's loaded this year with guys we could use.

A lot of smoke about the Bears interest in Saquan. We'll see if it's just chatter or for real.
They have the cap space do it, as long as the fill more pressing needs, I say why not. Dude is a beast.
Just make sure and split his snaps with someone else. Can't stay healthy but would be a huge addition along with Caleb and a top WR at 9. Would be entirely new offense and a good spot for Caleb to be walking into. Rare to have that as the top QB in the draft.

Really hope its just chatter that Barkley's camp is using to try to seem like he's got a higher market.

RB isn't a great place to spend big, Barkley hasn't been the same since his ACL tear, and the Bears have a lot of bigger holes.

Would much rather they spend that money on DL or DB.

Would love him in the team but not at 10 mil per. But he's still very dynamic and would boost the offense. I'm done with decades of only putting into the defense and watching offensive futility. No more

Mac Jones to Jax for a 6th rounder kind of sets the market for Fields.
Lol wut?
What do you think the Bears will get for a qb with a $25 mil option after the season? Other teams won’t give what the Bears want, seeing that M Jones was basically in the same spot and was worth a 6th. R Wilson is worth more since Denver is picking up the tab in 2024. Bears have to thread the needle to get the right compensation.

This is a terrible comparison. Situations and interest are nothing alike. I've said from the beginning that the Bears get no better than a second for Fields. I still believe that

While I agree that spending a ton of money on a RB is tough in today's NFL, I strongly disagree about him losing a step after the acl tear. I saw a lot of the NYG last season and their line was awful. Defenders were constantly in the backfield as soon as the ball was snapped. Barkley got every yard through sheer force of will.
I think this would be a good addition to help a young qb. Helps keep the heat off of him and also gives a quick safety valve in the passing game.

I'm with you on this

Stevenson played well as a rookie and they have Jaylon on the other side, so I think they're pretty good at CB. Gordon was mediocre. Need a safety but that's much easier to find.

Well, one guy is crap and the other is decent with obvious upside.
Oof

Per Rapoport, the Bears are signing All-Pro S Kevin Byard to a 2-year deal worth $15M base.
I live near Philly and saw him play a lot last year. I wasn't impressed.
He is an attacking ballhawk safety that literally played the Polamalu role in Lebeau's defense.
The Eagles played him as an outfielder. Dumbest coaching move.

He's pro bowl all pro caliber that could have lost a step but I haven't seen it.

In the Data Bowl, first nine weeks stats, he was the second rated DB in the NFL.
Huge difference in how Titans and Eagles used him.

Great guy to add to a young team too. Captain everyone likes

Eh, I hope he turns out OK, but I didn't see anything from him last year. Bouncing off ball carriers, getting burned by WR, jogging around the field. The only decent game I watched him play was against KC.
I hope you're right and it was just the scheme. We'll see.....

So no problem paying him $25 mil for upside?

Forget the "decent" part?

Not a Bears fan at all, but just giving him away is silly.
Now, quick question that's likely already been said, but has Field's 5th year option been exercised yet?
If not, geeze, keep him if all you can get is a 4th, or even a 3rd

The bears have until the first part of May to exercise the option and they have not done so yet.

Might be worth it just to get the comp pick later. That would be a crap shoot though.
I've been saying this since the end of the season. If you're looking at 3rd round or worse trade value then you keep him and take the compensatory pick when he leaves as a UFA at the end of the season.

I think keeping him will create so much drama in the city and possibly in the locker room. If he's not playing Williams will be on such a short leash with the Fields truthers. If he is playing and we're winning the questions will start about what to do with the hotshot rookie. I'd be very nervous about having both on the roster.
