***Chicago Bears Thread*** Ben Johnson hired. The Resurrection Begins! (3 Viewers)

in the event that Ben Johnson stands them up at the altar. Johnson is a high risk, high reward choice
Is there any substance to the Bears wanting Johnson, I mean seriously? Poles goes out and says they're casting a wide net for the next coach, does that mean 20 + interviews? What does that solve, the Bears will F this hire up just as they have in the past. They are not a serious team and sadly won't be until they are owned by someone who cares more about winning than filling the seats and making obscene $$$. There is no way Johnson is coming to Chicago, IMHO.
You'd have to think that Johnson is on their short list. That's why they are biding time and collecting intel in the meantime before they can bring him in for an in-person interview. If the Bears didn't conduct these other video interviews, it would look like they are just sitting idle, and most people would complain that they are not doing anything.

The question is who of Johnson or McCarthy is more likely to ruin Caleb Williams? Caleb is on his rookie deal. If the Bears don't win the Super Bowl in this timeframe, will making the playoffs be enough for him to re-sign? Who of these two has a better chance of getting to the SB? The one who has the experience and can get you into the playoffs consistently, or the high-upside rookie head coach that may need to be given a learning curve?

I have no sense of where Ben Johnson wants to between Chi, Jax, & LV. Speculation…
  • If the decision were QB situation alone I would say the Bears
  • Jax is willing to undercut/undermine Trent Baalke
  • Raiders GM spot is open. Could see Johnson going to the Raiders if they hired Ray Agnew (Detroit Assistant GM)

This makes sense. I think one thing he has to be looking at is not knowing what he will be working with in terms of drafted talent. At least he would know who is doing the grocery shopping for him.

If I had my choice, I'd go for the risk reward hire. Caleb has potential to be elite and Ben Johnson might have that potential as well. If one or both flop, we can at least say we shot our shot.

McCarthy is a mid tier coach with some concerns. Caleb could still flop under him. Or Caleb excels and its the coaching holding us at a first round playoff exit team.

My nightmare scenario is the Bears end up like the Bengals currently. Elite level QB play and the franchise is treading water.

Asst GM Ian Cunningham just lost out of the Titans GM job. I was ok losing him for the draft capital he'd bring back. It doesn't look like this is the year...

Which brings us back to Poles, who should have been fired.

yeah, I think it's a factor if you're one of the 15 guys interviewing....is this a GM I can work with? do I believe he's the right guy long term?

Yep, let's get this Ben Johnson vs McCarthy decision over.

Still give the edge to Johnson. I thought he got too cute with the playcalling last night. I absolutely hated the Williams pass.

That's just it. Trick plays are fun when they work and often put the team at a real disadvantage when they don't. High risk/high reward. That is definitely the Dan Campbell way.

The fact that ****ing McCarthy is even in the discussion over Johnson and likely the front runner now shows how incompetent this franchise will always be. Doesn't even look like Johnson even wants to come here and the ****ing Raiders are wooing him and likley hiring a new GM from the Redskins that he is very familiar with from Detroit. That Johnson would even consider the Raiders without a qb over the Bears with one is such an embarrassment for this franchise. The McCaskeys are the perfect example of people who would rather rule over the ashes than employ smarter people who will make their franchise successful. Hopeless

Also interviewing the Redskins assistant GM and former executive from Detroit. I forget his name but I'm sure you know him.

Respectfully disagree Flap. How could you feel so strongly about someone that's never been a head coach, with such little experience? You should know how hard it is to find the next McVay.

McCarthy has won a lot of games. Big games. And his offense is ALWAYS one of the best. He got A LOT out of Rodgers and Dak. So what he's not under 40 and wears skinny pants. The guy can coach football.

I'm still (perhaps futilely) hoping for Monken.
For better or worse, I think Monken represents the failure of both Plan A and Plan B.
Given their history plan A and plan B failing are probably for the best

ETA: I'd be ok with Johnson, and McCarthy is probably a worst case acceptable hire. I'll be really disappointed if its Flores.

I'll be disappointed if it's a defensive hire, but that is just the Bears doing Bear things. Honestly, I'll be disappointed if it isn't Johnson. I've warmed to Monken a bit, although I think he's probably the biggest risk hire.

Is Kliff Kingsbury even in the conversation? If not, he should be, and at the top of the list
He is. Though if I were Kingsbury, why would you want to leave Washington? He's still really young and assuming Daniels isn't a flash in the pan (which he almost certainly isn't) he'll have his choice of spots in the upcoming seasons.

Why is Monken the biggest risk? His resume is damn impressive.

Jalen Carter is the new Aaron Donald. Dude absolutely dominated that game today. Unblockable in big spots. Poles didn't want him anywhere near our clubhouse!

His coaching resume is unimpressive for a 58 year old especially as a head coach. It reeks of a guy who's just kinda fallen into the right situation to put him in a NFL head coach conversation.

Very exciting. Let's hope Johnson isn't the next McDaniels type. We know he can craft a good offensive gameplan but it takes a lot more than that to be a big time head coach. But this is very exciting right now.
