***Chicago Bears Thread*** Ben Johnson hired. The Resurrection Begins! (5 Viewers)

I could not be more disgusted. Only reason I would have been ok with tight end, which is far from a need position, is because Warren is so special. An elite weapon in so many ways. I honestly can't think of a more ignorant pick from this franchise in a long time.

I'm a Michigan fan. I hate the pick.

I had Warren & Loveland pretty close to each other. Loveland is a better route runner, Warren is better after the catch. Neither is on Bowers' level. Warren had bigger numbers this year, but Loveland was a ridiculously large portion of Michigan's passing offense, and this was just Loveland's 3rd season while Warren didn't do this until year 5. Neither did athletic testing, but PFF did have Loveland 99th percentile in their on-field athleticism metric GAS. Warren was generally projected to go a bit earlier and rated a bit higher by scouts, but it's close to a tossup which will be better in the NFL.

Some people are comparing Loveland to Sam LaPorta, but LaPorta's biggest strength is forcing missed tackles and Loveland is not good at that, so they're pretty different players. Warren is more similar to LaPorta.

This draft didn’t work out very well for the Bears but I think I’m ok with the pick. Many sites had Loveland ranked higher than Warren. They say he’s a purer pass catcher than Tyler and a better fit for this offense. Not sure what everyone is complaining about. What else should they have done?

Take Warren or at least fill a real need with a good prospect in Mykell Williams.

The TE pick turns Cole Kmet into Dawson Knox or Desmond Clark. They can run some 12 personnel, but using that as their base offense would be unusual - last year there were 0 teams who used multiple TEs on at least half their snaps, the year before it was 1 team (ATL), the year before that it was 1 team (BAL). Those ATL & BAL teams also both had terrible WRs (other than Drake London).

I'd guess that Kmet doesn't finish his contract with the Bears, which goes through 2027.

I hope there is a plan. I don't know what else to say. Johnson obviously wanted a better TE/TE2. I don't like the pick, but I'm willing to see how it plays out. Loveland is a talented kid.

Top options for day 2.

Will Johnson
Mike Green
Nick Emmanwari
Luther Burden III
OSU RBs
They are saying that Will Johnson, who is a talented kid, may have some serious issues with his knee. Thats why he dropped out of the first round. The injury may not have much of an effect short term, but there are concerns about his longevity.

The draft went exactly the way the Bears didn't want it to go. I'm sure Poles had Campbell, Membou and Banks Jr on tap for #10. I don't exactly love drafting a TE at 10, but here we are. Loveland is already a better blocker than Kmet, but neither are the type of TE that should be lining up in the slot. Seems kind of redundant, IMO. Is there any chance of trading Kmet out during the draft for additional pick(s)?

I like Burden as a slot WR need pick. Green is a solid 2nd rounder that some had projected into the 1st. And we need more IOL depth.

I, literally, just said the same thing to my brother when we talked about the draft.

Yes as things unfolded I think they saw all their tier 1 guys go off the board and no one was willing to make a move to trade up. I could be wrong but this seems like a draft with good players and not great players in round 1 so teams were probably reluctant. After the Saints drafted Banks I knew it was going to be a wild card.

Such a shame. Kmet is good and such an important guy in that locker room. Has really emerged as a leader. And never got a real chance to show what he can do as a receiver. I was very excited for him in this offense.

Great pick by Bears. Warren got the hype but Loveland was the better receiving tight end by most metrics.
Honest question, and don't take offense. Did you watch much Penn St last season? I did because some good friends have a child there. Warren was the only threat on that offense and every D they played knew it. He still dominated with ease. All over the field. Was unstoppable for the most part. Just an awesome football player. I just can't take these evaluators seriously saying Loveland is a better receiver based on post season workouts. I'm sure based on metrics Loveland has potential to be a good tight end. We already have a good tight end. Warren is a great football player though. That's my take. I'm done complaining. I'll let it play out. Loveland better play a huge role this season. I'm talking like 900+ yards and 7+ tds. Tenth pick in the draft needs to be an instant contributor. Hope it works out.

I'm a Michigan fan. Been one since my cousin played for them when I was a kid. I saw every game Loveland played. He's a very good player. At no point did I watch him and think he was a first round difference maker.

I guess another positive to Loveland over Warren is that he's two years younger. Loveland was having a breakout season when he was 19, which is a better indicator for NFL success.

I guess I am in the camp of not loving this pick. I think he looks good and if the Bears like him more than Warren, OK, that's fine. My biggest issue is that part of the opportunity cost here (other than not having a player at a greater position of need) is the impact on Kmet. We already paid him, he's a good character guy and close with Caleb - I wanted to see what he could do under Ben Johnson. Now there are, perhaps, too many mouths to feed to be able to know what Kmet's ceiling is. That feels relevant and it is hard to imagine this choice NOT disrupting the locker room, if it results in the perception that Kmet has been done wrong. If nobody wanted to trade back, I would have preferred any number of D linemen or Edges...even a guy like Conerly or Zabel would make sense to me. Yeah, they aren't graded as high as Loveland, but it would be awesome to have their higher positional value and greater depth on the line. I want to trust Ben but this seems like a mistake.

I mean I get it from a scheme point of view. Loveland is just better at what Johnson wants to do. He's a true mismatch. Just a different player than Kmet. I'm hung up on the value and how rare it is for early round TE's to have success at the next level. Also have typical PTSD of past Bears drafts going pear shaped. Gotta trust Johnson. He got his guy.

I hope it works out that way, and I am assuming that we will see both guys on the field a lot. I would love to know how far down the "possibilities flow chart" this option was for the Bears.

Mike Green is a beast. Super explosive player. I think he's pretty close to Abdul Carter actually. Have to believe he's simply off the board for many teams, including the Bears unfortunately. I mean if the Bears passed on Jalen Carter for character issues I don't see how they take Green. Dude will be a steal for some team though.

Really like the pick. Bears could have picked a young Jerry Rice and people would ***** about it. They got the best receiving TE in the class. It's good for the offense. It just is.

I watch a ton of college football - I think Warren is a solid tight end. I think Loveland is better. Let me see if I can pull some of those metrics. I don’t recall analysts saying Loveland was better based off workouts. Most believe he is better based off film (routes run, separation ability . . . etc)

I agree and feel like Warren was easily the best of the TE class
His numbers at Penn St are mind blowing
I understand Loveland might be a pretty good TE but Warren was a machine last year

I hope they get Green at 39. He seems like the best fit/need/value on the board. I also like Will Johnson there as well.

41 has to be the highest rated RB they have. I think a decent amount of backs go late second.

They passed on Carter because it was a first rounder. Using a second may be a little more palatable.

If they could come out of the 2nd round with Henderson and either Johnson or Green I'd be ecstatic.

Green has sexual assault allegations out there.
Sounds like both are multiple years old and he said he was never even questioned in either incident.

I don't have all the details, but reads like lower level red flags.

Just tossing some names out there:

Prince Uman - DE/ED
Landon JAX (Landmass) - DL/ED
Scourton - DE/ED
Kaleb Johnson - RB
JT Tuimoloau - DE/ED
Al Collins - DT
Sawyer - DE/ED
Wyatt Milum - OT
