####AM 670 guy yesterday was saying the Cubs were very close to announcing a big trade yesterday. They speculated it would involve Castro and Hamels, pointing to the Phillies signing of Kevin Correia, and further speculated that the reason it wasn't announced yet is because of the injury to Baez, who was about to be called up to play 3B.
i don't get why the baez injury would have affected that? they could have left bryant at 3rd and coughlan in left. addison at SS and herrera at 2nd. unless baez was part of the deal and now the injury turned the phillies off...AM 670 guy yesterday was saying the Cubs were very close to announcing a big trade yesterday. The members of the Cubs scouting department trusted their instincts and their homework Monday night in selecting University of Cincinnati outfielder Ian Happ with their first pick, No. 9 overall, in baseball's amateur draft.
"We really feel he was one of the top, if not the best, college hitters in this year's draft," said Jason McLeod, senior vice president of scouting and player development. "We feel very confident with that and especially confident with who he is as a person. We feel he's going to fit right in along the lines of Kris Bryant and Kyle Schwarber."
Happ, 20, batted .369 with 18 doubles, 14 home runs, 44 RBIs and 12 stolen bases in his junior season for the Bearcats. He also drew 49 walks and had a .492 on-base percentage en route to earning American Athletic Conference player of the year honors.
"I'm very excited to add to the college bats that are coming through and hopefully be the next one to move through the system," Happ said.
The 6-foot, 205-pound Happ has played the outfield primarily, but McLeod said Happ will move around the infield as well.
"We're really big on our guys who can control the strike zone," McLeod said. "We trust our process and evaluation on hitters, especially college hitters."
McLeod said Happ, who was undrafted out of Mt. Lebanon High School in the Pittsburgh area three years ago, came into focus as the ninth overall pick this spring. Happ was a two-time Cape Cod League All-Star in 2013-14 with Harwich.
The Cubs had 12 reports on Happ, and Mike Roberts, head coach of Cotuit in the Cape Cod League who serves as a consultant for the Cubs, also had input in Happ's evaluation.
This marked the fourth consecutive year that the Cubs didn't select a pitcher with their first pick, but McLeod stood by the organization's philosophy.
"The history of the draft will tell you if the players are close in the evaluation, the college hitter usually is the way to go," McLeod said. "They pan out."
The assigned value for the ninth overall pick is $3.351 million.
The Cubs selected left-handed-hitting outfielder Donnie Dewees of North Florida with their second pick. Dewees batted .422 with 18 home runs, 23 stolen bases and a .483 on-base percentage.

but i also have to believe that if this was true we would have seen it reported elsewhere, and not just on the score.
Just for fun, let's speculate.... would sending castro and baez for hamels work? i assume the phillies would want more than that? i don't really have a clue on the value for both sidesRuben Amaro Jr. is a fickle man.i don't get why the baez injury would have affected that? they could have left bryant at 3rd and coughlan in left. addison at SS and herrera at 2nd. unless baez was part of the deal and now the injury turned the phillies off...AM 670 guy yesterday was saying the Cubs were very close to announcing a big trade yesterday. Castro AND Baez would be way too much to give up for Hamels.Just for fun, let's speculate.... would sending castro and baez for hamels work? i assume the phillies would want more than that? i don't really have a clue on the value for both sidesRuben Amaro Jr. is a fickle man.i don't get why the baez injury would have affected that? they could have left bryant at 3rd and coughlan in left. addison at SS and herrera at 2nd. unless baez was part of the deal and now the injury turned the phillies off...AM 670 guy yesterday was saying the Cubs were very close to announcing a big trade yesterday. Baez alone should be enough if they're taking Hamels' entire contract. RAJ is a dope though, which is why the Phillies are in shambles.Castro AND Baez would be way too much to give up for Hamels.Just for fun, let's speculate.... would sending castro and baez for hamels work? i assume the phillies would want more than that? i don't really have a clue on the value for both sidesRuben Amaro Jr. is a fickle man.i don't get why the baez injury would have affected that? they could have left bryant at 3rd and coughlan in left. addison at SS and herrera at 2nd. unless baez was part of the deal and now the injury turned the phillies off...AM 670 guy yesterday was saying the Cubs were very close to announcing a big trade yesterday. I see him ending up in Chicago either way. Been speculating on this happening even before Maddon landed there. I don't really see Detroit falling completely out of it though.some talk in Detroit about possibly trading David price to the cubs if the tigers fall out of it, doesn't seem like a Dave Dombrowski move
Yeah, it seems odd it would be mentioned (I think it came from David Kaplan) and then crickets. only way i think the cubs would trade for him is if he agreed to an extension before hand... otherwise i'd just go after him in free agency and not give up anything going that route (other than dollars)I see him ending up in Chicago either way. i would actually miss castro. yea he's an airhead sometimes but i still like himCubs trade rumor Hamels and Papelbon for Castro, McKinley, Edwards Jr., and PTBNL?
He can be very frustrating at times, but as I've said before, young cost controlled shortstops who can hit are very rare. The Cubs have access to another one though, which makes Castro expendable. What they don't have is a top of the rotation starter like Hamels.i would actually miss castro. yea he's an airhead sometimes but i still like himCubs trade rumor Hamels and Papelbon for Castro, McKinley, Edwards Jr., and PTBNL?
I would imagine the Phillies would be all over that offer. Seems like an overpay from the Cubs IMO.He can be very frustrating at times, but as I've said before, young cost controlled shortstops who can hit are very rare. The Phillies should be falling all over themselves to take that, right? Especially if it is actually offered and the Cubs are going to take on those contracts.
i still think next year is THE year, and giving up talent to "go for it" this year is too short sighted. i think theo is well aware of that and will make a good move when the time is rightI would imagine the Phillies would be all over that offer. They need to bolster the rotation if they want to seriously compete for the postseason this year. They got away with it yesterday, but I can't foresee the bullpen holding up for 5-6 innings every time Wada pitches. I can't complain about Hendricks. He throws strikes and is usually good for 6 innings.32-26
6 back of StL
.5 game up on Pitt for the 2nd WC
I could see Wood back in the rotation at some point. I don't think Wada is going to cut it.They need to bolster the rotation if they want to seriously compete for the postseason this year. Lester's peripherals suggest he should improve, but I can't help but think his inability to throw to a base will keep him from reaching that potential and being dominant in the National league.
Arrieta and Hammel have been great so far.
I still think they need a true ace like Hamels or Price to get to where we want them to be. Is it greedy of me to hope for both of them as soon as next year? Hamels just seems like such a long shot with RAJ's track record of trade return requests.
Please tell me you lootedhad a great time outside wrigley last night... go blackhawks![]()
not really. missed his spots a lot. threw close to 30 pitches in the first inning. must have been thrown off by the presence of the cup6 walks? I didn't get to see the game. Was he getting squeezed by the umpire?
I didn't think the strike zone was good at all, and Arrieta was definitely squeezed on some pitches, the worst being one on an 2-2 count in the top of the second (I think to Gomes?). Len and Bob even commented on the pitch when the Pitchfx graphic came up and showed it almost right down the middle. Gomes (or whoever it was) flied out on the next pitch, but Arrieta and Montero both looked annoyed. Inning or so later, Montero had an awful strike called on him and I think those two pitches created the mood that got Montero ejected later on.not really. missed his spots a lot. threw close to 30 pitches in the first inning. must have been thrown off by the presence of the cup6 walks?
