Classic Album Discussion Thread: The Kinks-Lola Versus Powerman and the Moneygoround, Pt. 1 (2 Viewers)

OK I'll take the bait on "Stranglehold".  It's a 3 min song stretched out to 8 1/2 by a guitar jam that stays way too long without ever really going anywhere, a corny bolero bridge, a whole lot of "c'mon ups" and 45 seconds of pointless noodling to take the song out.

When you must, Nugent is best taken in smaller doses.

What I do now is with a firestick I can say play classical music or any genre I want and it plays.  Pretty damn amazing if you ask me.  So what I am doing if I see bands that I don't know which is most of them now.  I use the firestick.

I also have a Sansui power amp,pre amp and tuner, along with a technics turntable and Klipch speakers that I play my old albums on.  I got that equipment when I was in the Army in the 70s.
I wish I still had room for a killer sound system.  City living and kids have their disadvantages.

Thats good. I would just suggest be open with technology and be willing to give it a try. Some of it is dumb but it can also be really cool I love that you are learning new ####, that is very cool.

The accessibility of music is incredible now.  To be able to listen to pretty much whatever I want wherever I want is a music's fan dream come true.

I was never a Big Nugent fan.  Don't own a single album or CD.

:lmao:  I like Nugent, but this is a lot more accurate than I care to admit.

Yea it is pretty bulky.  I really wish I had done what my buddy did.  While we were all spending our money on stereo equipment he was buying Krugerrands.  I wonder who was smarter?  He was buying them  for about 140 bucks a pop.  Thing is if I remember correctly as PFCs we were only making about 90 bucks a month.

I love Spotify for this reason. I do miss the relationship I had with physical albums, the liner notes, pics & lyrics. All can be found online , can really deep dive for info but it’s still not the same. Probably just the nostalgia

Regarding the Nug- I've seen him about 3 times from '76-'92. I like the Ted Nugent album and used to crank it on 8 Track in my Bug with speakers on the roof while parked on the beach in Jax Beach the summer of '76.

However, my favorite album of his by far was early Nug with the Amboy Dukes:

Tooth Fang & Claw and the song "Hibernation" is by far his best guitar work.

It's one of the reasons I still search for "albums" through Pandora (and I'm sure others).  Nothing like knowing ahead of time what that next song is going to sound like.  I can remember any time hearing some of the albums I played out expecting to hear that next song.  Nothing beats it, the way music was intended to be heard.

Fight for your Right should always, and I mean always, be followed by No Sleep 'til Brooklyn

Funny story on Stranglehold. I teach HS and our former gym teacher played this song at the start of every gym class. It was their warm up run. Everyday, Stranglehold blaring in the gym, kids running laps. He always joked that one day a former student would be crossingt the street, hear Stranglehold playing from a car, and the kid would sprint into traffic. It's not funny, but it is.

That's a nice speckled perch in that avatar btw

Beat me to it. If I’m going to listen to Nugent, my preference would be via the Amboy Dukes. Maybe even Damn Yankees. Just not a fan.

:lmao:   The Bitcoin of the Classic Rock era

Also unpopular take: Physical Graffiti is not that good.
It has some great stuff, but, like many double albums, is very bloated.  Kashmir is the obvious classic, and I am a huge fan of Ten Years Gone, Down by the Seaside and In My Time of Dying, but a lot of the rest seems like middle of the road Zeppelin stuff.  As a whole, it just doesn't stack up to I, II, IV or Houses of the Holy, but hey, it was Led Zeppelin and who was going to tell them not to do a double album?

I had all of Nugent's albums up to Scream Dream and had a few Amboy Dukes albums. Free for All and Cat Scratch being the best. Loved his wild man routine and his distinctive guitar sound. I wouldn't say I was a huge fan but he was in the rotation regularly. Wango Tango!

Dang, if that ain't the truth.  I remember being a kid praying a song I liked would come on the radio so I could quickly hit record on my cassette deck that I had waiting.  And then I would listen to that crappy recording ad nauseam.

Hey, LZ is a great freaking band. I totally get why people love them. I listen to music others here would laugh at. To each their own like you say. I'm just expressing my opinion and poking the bear a bit here.
Yep, I get it. I don't pretend to be a music connoisseur and I would get laughed at too for some stuff I like (and lose my man card in the process). Art is subjective and all that. We like what we like.

Next up: the most overrated album of all time?

Pink Floyd- The Dark Side Of the Moon (1973)

Side One

Speak to Me

 Breathe (In the Air)

On the Run

Time

The Great Gig In the Sky

Side Two

Money

Us and Them

Any Color You’d Like

Brain Damage

Eclipse

I’m not a hater. I like this band. I love Brain Damage from this album, love Wish You Were Here, really like several songs from The Wall. Besides Brain Damage, Money is a fine early 70s rocker, and Us and Them is a serviceable ballad.

But the greatest album of all time? The best selling album of all time? Somebody has to explain this to me because I don’t get it. I mean it’s fine, but there’s about 50 records from the same era that I’d rather listen to. What makes this one so memorable? Why has it lasted?

I don't want to give people the wrong impression of me( was a long time ago ) but one word hallucinogenics.  Nothing makes a lasting impression like tripping your balls off for the first time in the back of a VW listening to Dark Side Of The Moon.  Not that I would recommend that for anyone now,but every time I hear money I think about that.  It may not be number 1 but it has to be right up there in the top 5.

Anyone ever try the Dark side of Oz thing?  Kind of interesting.

A good pair of headphones  will go a long way
One of the only things I collect these days are off-brand Chinese in-ear monitors. I order a bunch of different IEMs from Chinese e-commerce sites based on what the :nerd: at head-fi.org are currently touting as the price/performance champs.  It's fun when they magically appear at my doorstep 2-4 weeks later.  There a re a variety of small unknown companies who pack a lot of technology into tiny form factors for very little money.  I've gotten IEMs with dual dynamic drivers _and_ two balance armatures for 15-20 bucks shipped.  The sound quality measures favorably against my Sennheiser Momentum over ears.  Cans will always give better soundstage but IEMs offer intimacy and convenience.  Plus I don't look like a huge dork when I'm walking the dog.

Classic rock is still better though when played through a killer sound system with big woofers and tweeters.

Interesting. Any offbrands you recommend? I have a pair of Audio Technica and imo they are perfection.

The greatness of Dark Side of the Moon cannot be explained with words.  It is something you "get" and feel when you listen to it as a whole.  It is arguably the greatest record ever made.  It is a masterpiece, musically, thematically and lyrically.

I’ve been given the same argument about, among other things, James Joyces’ Ulysses, the art of Jackson Pollack, and the New Testament. I’ve never “gotten” any of them.

Agree with this. I've listened to it hundreds of times easy. It's an introspective work of art, the quintessential capture of the human condition. Great Gig in the Sky still gives me chills, my favorite track. Like a defiant howl against the tragedy of mortality (how's that for pseudo intellectual teeny bopper analysis  :D )

Pink Floyd was the first rock concert I ever attended.  22 Jun 1975 at Milwaukee County Stadium.  Teenage Eephus was between his sophomore and Junior years.  I went with John Pintar, Pat Woida and some of their friends.  We waited all afternoon in the parking lot for a night show.  I remember it was still light when the band opened with some songs I'd never heard before.  According to setlist.fm, it was as-yet unreleased material that would eventually end up on Wish You Were Here and Animals.

I was unaware until tonight that there's a crappy audience bootleg of the rest of their set (DSOTM & "Echoes").   It had been really hot in the daylight but it clouded over at night culminating in a rain storm that halted the show right after "On the Run".  It was a brief summer shower but the crowd was drenched by the time they resumed.  The most magical thing about that night was when clouds parted right after the "I'll see you on the dark side of the moon" lyric and the moon became brightly visible.  According to the June 1975 moonphase calendar, the full moon fell on the night of the concert.  I've been to a lot of concerts since but that was the best special effect I've ever seen at a show.
