Classic Album Discussion Thread: The Kinks-Lola Versus Powerman and the Moneygoround, Pt. 1 (3 Viewers)

One of the best starts and finishes to an album out there, but the middle leaves some to be desired for me.  And I'm one that still semi-regularly listens to Stairway.  Can't help but think of Argo whenever Levee comes on anymore (that's a good thing).

Yeah, but they stole from Spirit.

Another one of those albums that may be ridiculously overplayed, but for good reason. I agree with Tim that "Levee" is the standout cut on the album. I'll still find myself listening to Stairway all the way through, although at this stage I'd rather hear the Heart cover at the Kennedy Center from a few years back.

I totally disagree with you here.  I don't find a weak spot anywhere on this album.  Battle of Evermore and Going to California for me are like Desperado was to Puddy  Elaine's flavor of the week

iirc, David Bowie had a hand in bringing attention to this.
It's hysterical to watch Marc Goodman squirm and talk in circles while Bowie smiles and nods and replies "interesting" (a/k/a "you're full of ####").

  Nice touch with Desperado - even if you got the Puddy part wrong.

Totally with you on Going to California - when I said beginning and end I meant the first and last two.  I think Evermore is forgettable though.  Just never did it for me.  De-espera-ado...

Didn't get into Zeppelin until college when I bought the boxed set from one of the music club things so didn't really experience the music in the traditional original albums way. Loved the whole thing.

Like Appetite and Black and Black, LZ IV is a great album that unfortunately had that one song I can't stand and end up skipping.  Here it's The Battle of Evermore.   Because they can't be played front to back, these albums take a hit on my all time great albums list.   All the other songs are great to epic though.

I’m a bit surprised about the dislike regarding this song. To me it’s sound, which is a lot like Gallow’s Pole from the previous album, is central to the whole LZ listening experience.
Oddly, Gallows is one of my favorites from that album.  I find BoE shrill and unlistenable.   Paradise and You Shook Me I can tune out if needed, but my hate for this song knows no bounds.   Don't have a great reason for it, it just is.

Dog gonnit, they're all better than "The Girl Is Mine"

I like the whole thing except Four Sticks.  Levee is great. It was slowed down to drop it a half note and that helped create the menacing tone, especially on the drums.

Also my favorite on IV (but not my favorite Zep overall). Just a fantastic heavy, sludgy song.

Have you heard the alternate version on the Coda remaster/extra disc? The title is "If It Keeps on Raining." Bonzo's drums are pushed into the background and Jones' bass is front and center.

I'm surprised as well.  It is actually my favorite song on the album.  That's the beauty of music, i suppose.

How many songs on this album did Led Zeppelin rip off?

I hope When the Levee Breaks is legit because that songs rules.

Agreed.  Top to bottom an awesome album

My original plan was to wait a long time before choosing a second album from the same artist. But last night I put on an old playlist and Levee came on; I listened to those pounding drums and thought what the hell?

When the Levee Breaks is for me the best song on the album, and the best song by LZ period. There I said it. Going to California is my second favorite on the album, my favorite acoustic effort by this band. Evermore introduces me to Sandy Denny and then Fairport Convention so I’m grateful. Rock and Roll is the ultimate in rockabilly which must make Brian Setzer green with envy. Stairway is the most overplayed song in rock history and I still love it.

Led Zeppelin IV everybody.
Great album front to back. Upper-tier elite of albums.

Pretty much anytime you hear a rock band from the late 60s or early 70s perform a song with verses of 3 lines, in which the first two lines are the same, you can assume that it's a cover of an old blues song.

Outstanding album from stem to stern, in fact, pretty much perfection in my opinion, Zep IV I mean.

Greatness personified.

I mean, Thriller and ZoSo are DNA records if you're a rock fan of a certain age. It's really hard for me to critique these albums with any kind of objectivity. They're baked in to the meat of rock history.

One thing about Thriller - it was already starting to sell in amounts that would make most nations' GNP blush. But when Michael did "Billie Jean" on the Motown 25 Special - it shot into the unknowable stratosphere.

Every single person I knew - pick a race, pick a preferred genre.....none of that mattered - talked about it for weeks whenever music would be in the conversation. To my mind, it's the last massive monoculture moment. At least, as far as music goes.

in this #metoo era, why are we still glorifying Michael Jackson? Does the fact that he’s thankfully a corpse somehow absolve him of his reputation?
Dude was a Grade-A weirdo but a hell of a singer/dancer.  I always separate someone’s art from their personal life.

IIRC disc 2 of the box set was my favorite.

Was at a school dance in 7th grade and Black Dog came on. My life was forever changed.

One of the greatest albums of all time, but I can barely listen to BD or Rock and Roll any more due to overplay.

Stairway will never be overplayed for me.  I could listen to it every day.

Zep IV and Thriller have some great songs on them. I'd be fine with never hearing any of them ever again. Except "When The Levee Breaks."

IV is obviously a classic, but I rarely listen to it.  Even back before the songs got overplayed in my head, I never thought it was as good as II, I or Houses of the Holy.  Stairway to Heaven never gets old.

London based art group Hipgnosis designed over 200 album covers between 1968 and 1983.  Fittingly, their last work was Led Zeppelin's Coda but they're probably best known for Pink Floyd covers.

I found this great Hipgnosis site that's ancient web design but incredible album cover design.  I was an obsessive crate digger for 15 years but there are a lot of records here I've never seen before.

Yup. And in before anyone says the movie made a mistake with “Kashmir” subsequently playing in Rat’s car. Was done on purpose by Cameron Crowe because LZ wouldn’t let him use anything from ZoSo.
I always thought it showed how nervous he was - he got the album wrong. The cool part is Kashmir really fits the scene, and makes it funnier.

Great album but my 3rd fav Zeppelin (I,II) Cant stand Misty Mountain Hop it makes me want to tear off my ears .
I don't hate it, but I've never been a fan.  The vocal melody gets on my nerves.

On the flip side, I wasn't wild about Going to California for a long time, but I've come around to really liking it.

Yeah, I think that was indeed the way Crowe had the scene play out - good way to use the restriction to the film’s advantage.
