Portis: No News is Good News

Tandler's Redskins Blog Ver. 09.04.06--We will get our first official peek at the condition of Clinton Portis’ left shoulder sometime in the next few days when the Redskins release the injury report for Monday night’s game against the Minnesota Vikings. It will be good to get some clarity in a situation where that has been a rare commodity.

Some sloppy reporting over the weekend has led many to conclude that the chances are slim that Portis will take the field on Monday. A report on KFFL.com, which is a popular website that compiles sports reports from around the Internet and posts them in capsule form, said that Portis was “doubtful” for the opener. Here is the report:

Redskins | Portis doubtful for opener

Sat, 2 Sep 2006 09:16:01 -0700

The Associated Press reports Washington Redskins RB Clinton Portis' (shoulder) availability for the season opener is in serious doubt, according to head coach Joe Gibbs.

This led to a rash of message board posts and talk-show calls from panicked Redskins fans saying that, see, the injury really is more serious than the Redskins are letting on. The problem is that Joe Gibbs never said any such thing. The last time he spoke to the media, which was on Friday, here is what he had to say about the injury situation:

With the exception of Clinton and Shawn, I think we know what we've got with everyone else (in terms of injuries). I think Clinton has done extremely well. We'll have a discussion with him and see what he thinks.

How they get “serious doubt” out of this statement, I have no idea. The folks at KFFL should know that the word “doubtful” has a very precise meaning in terms of NFL injuries. On the official injury report it means that there is a 75% chance that the player won’t play. You simply can’t draw that conclusion from what Gibbs said. It was quite sloppy and irresponsible of KFFL to have stated the situation in that way.

The view here is that it would be surprising, although not shocking, for Portis to sit out on Monday. This feeling is based on the simple fact that if the shoulder was considerably worse than the Redskins have been indicating that word of that would have leaked out by now. This story is national news. It is being pounded on all angles. The health of Portis’ shoulder is a critical story in the fantasy football world. Ever since the injury happened on August 13 thousands of phone calls have been made in an effort to get a solid nugget of information indicating that the injury would either cost Portis some games or would seriously hamper his performance in 2006. Not one remotely credible report has come out indicating that either one of those is likely to happen.

In this case, the old saying rings very true—no news is good news.

This doesn’t mean that there is no cause for concern. Although Portis is right handed and he prefers to carry the ball in that hand and the injury is to the left shoulder.

He’s using his left arm to push off a defender and gain a few additional yards. If the arm you use for your stiff arm is stiff all season long, that could well to hamper your effectiveness, especially if defenders are coaches to grab that arm and yank on it. Yeah, that wouldn’t really seem to be sporting, but don’t think that Gregg Williams would hesitate to do the same thing if he was an opposing defensive coordinator and he knew that a well-timed yank might put the other team’s best offensive player on the bench.

Regardless, it’s been amusing to see many Redskins-bashing members of the media do such an abrupt about-face when it comes to the value of Clinton Portis. When the Redskins traded for Portis in 2004 these folks were incredulous that they would give up Champ Bailey and a #2 draft pick for a system back. When they signed Portis to a big contract extension a few months later, it was ridiculous to pay so much for a mere running back, a commodity that could be had for much, much less cap space.

Now that Portis may, just may, be affected by this shoulder injury the same journalists have dropped the Redskins from being a possible Super Bowl contender to a team that will be fortunate to finish around .500. His value is growing immeasurably in his absence. A little consistency would be nice, but why should these guys start now?

News Story: RB Clinton Portis didn't practice on Tuesday and remains questionable for Minnesota with the partially dislocated left shoulder he suffered on Aug. 13 at Cincinnati. Portis has been running and coach Joe Gibbs expects him not to have to wear a brace when he returns to game action.

Thursday, September 07, 12:00 AM EST (Week 1)

News Story: Is listed as questionable (shoulder). Portis was set to be a top 5 fantasy RB this season before his shoulder injury. Now he is "day to day" and may not start this week against MIN. He's shaping up to be a game-time decision and the team has put the final decision in his hands. If he starts, he is a must play, but because he's playing Monday nite, owners may want to put him on the bench or else risk getting a goose egg if he doesn't play.

Recommendation: Bench

Here's the Post Skins blogger responding to a comment about the entry that dgreen posted earlier:

everyone sit tight. He's supposed to talk to the media after practice. CP is an honest dude; you'll get your info straight from the horse's mouth when we get it.I know all kind of people out there in internet/fantasy land are going off half cocked; that's why ya gots to wait to see what Dolla Bill says.Tony- Duckett looks like short yardage, change of pace guy whetehr CP plays or not. Betts is the main backup, better blocker, knows the system, has had success here before. I see him getting 20-plus carries if Portis can't go, and probably getting a lot of carries even if Portis does dress, 'cause CP's probably not up for 20 odd carries anyway after missing this much time.Cheers.

He was not out there taking part during the 30 minute window we media schlubs get to watch. He may have come out later to do some drills, but I can't tell you till they let us out of ths damned media room to get out to the field to talk to guys ... They just let us out so we'll see.Posted by: Jason L | September 7, 2006 04:01 PM

Portis Speaks

Portis said he's about 75 percent, would not be ready to play if he had to today and sounds very skeptical about being ready for Monday. he kept talking about the long-term and not doing anything to hurt himself for the long haul by rushing back.

He said he's 75 percent right now, and does not want to come back until he's 100 percent.

When he comes back he wants to be himself, a 25-carry back, and with so much time off and so few hits under his belt, that's not him right now. Said it would probably take at least two tough practices for him to be ready to play, and, unless he was doing some serious bluffing, I'd say don't start him on your fantasy teams and prepare to see a lot fo Ladell Betts Monday night.

Gibbs says Portis is still day-to-day and it will be the player's decision to play or not. Barring a complete turnaround in the next 48 hours, I wouldn't plan on him for the opener.

And there you have it. Start your speculation for Week 2. And maybe beyond.

If this isn't the most definitive news to date, I don't know what is.

I would tend to agree. Still monitor his practice participation, but I'd say if you're in doubt as of your lineup submission deadline, start someone else.

To further muddle the situation, the Scout.com Skins reporter (who is credentialed at Redskins Park) says Portis did practice and ran a few plays in pads.

Take it FWIW.

The team website has daily updated videos. Portis' interview was not among them though. I don't have audio at work, but there's a Joe Gibbs interview on there that I'll bet covers this in part.

Let's say he is even 85% by Monday. But what makes that bad is that week 2 will be a short recovery week. So if he plays in week 1, he likely needs to play less in week 2.

They have Minnesota at home in week 1 (This is a game they are expected to win). They have Dallas on the road in week 2 (A game that will be a dogfight). I believe they are going to sit him now with the hopes that they have their best team against their hated rival in week 2.

One link to that report
The Ticker will be updated constantly right up until kickoff on Monday night. Check back and refresh frequently to get the latest.

OK, a correction to the earlier report. Portis did take the field in pads after we had gone inside. He did some very limited work, according to Joe Gibbs. Sorry about the earlier report, that’s one of the drawbacks of “virtually live” reporting.

thanks... there was a QnA w/ Portis... but no vidhttp://www.redskins.com/news/newsDetail.jsp?id=19507

chances are slim to none that he's in there first week... unless he goes all out tomorrow in practice and feels fine

Yeah, at this point if I had to make a call right now I'd say he's likely not going to play based upon his and others' description of his physical capabilities now and given that the week 1 opponent is Minnesota while in week 2 they face Dallas, a more critical (and tougher) opponent.

If you have even a decent RB3 or flex WR who you can start in his place, I'd do it. Even if he plays I just can't picture him getting a full workload in his first game back.

WTEM beat reporter finally backed off and said he's now firmly in the "Portis won't play" camp.
Maybe he is, but I'm not yet convinced that Portis won't play. The Redskins are doubting themselves after a poor preseason, and the Viking game is not looking easy for them. Portis wants the ball when things are tough, he's a fierce competitor. While it's probably best medically for him not to play, my guess is that by gametime he'd be asking to play even if he had no arms. "Tis but a flesh wound."

The interview I saw with him yesterday made it sound very unlikely that he plays in week 1.

Washington Post

His colorful costumes turned each Thursday last year into his personal comedy routine, but Clinton Portis yesterday played a role he didn't particularly enjoy.

"This is the first Thursday you're going to see me injured and hopefully it will be the last one," said Portis, who suffered a partial separation of his left shoulder in the Washington Redskins' first preseason game against Cincinnati. "Today, I'm the Injured Man. But, hopefully, we can change things. I want to get back on the field as soon as possible, and try to help my teammates."

Lacking both an outrageous outfit and also the Redskins uniform and pads worn by virtually all of his teammates, Portis was subdued. He did everything but rule himself out of Monday's regular season opener with Minnesota.

"It's real frustrating because of the excitement of having the first Monday night game, seeing your teammates and going 0-4 in the preseason and not playing well," he said. "To get on the field and prove to everyone that that was preseason and it doesn't matter. Our goal is to get into the playoffs and hopefully the Super Bowl. If we do that, the hell with the preseason."

Portis said he would like to take the decision of whether he will play right up until game time, but added that he could not consider playing in a limited capacity.

"I'd like to take that shot, but at the same time I have to do what's best for this team. T.J. [Duckett], Ladell [betts] and Rock [Cartwright] are working hard enough to get us to this point and it's not right for me to just jump in and try and take over after what they've done. I still need to get back into football shape."

Redskins Coach Joe Gibbs said during practice that Portis wore pads for the first time and participated in some drills, but that the final decision of whether to play belonged to Portis.

"I'm going to say it is strictly day-by-day unless he really comes around," Gibbs said. "The decision will be up to him."

I think the reality is that there is no more urgency over this game than if the team went 4-0 in the preseason. They truly don't care about the last four weeks, so that won't be a reason for Portis to play. Gibbs, of course, will talk up the "need to win" after the poor preseason, but that's just because he always downplays his team and talks up the opponent. This will come down to the status of Portis' shoulder and the long term interests of the team with Portis in the lineup.

"The way things look, bro, you'll probably be seeing 2-6 against Dallas," Portis said. "But who knows? If not, I should be ready for Houston. They want me to be 100 percent."Portis said he has had no full contact on his shoulder, which he hurt making a tackle in the preseason opener against Cincinnati."I tried to show coach that I still had it, but I don't think he fell for it," said Portis, who rushed for a franchise-record 1,516 yards last season. "I tried to hit the bag, but it was wet, so it didn't make me look too good."

D.C. locals are reporting that Larry Michael just said that Portis took work in pads at practice today.

Clinton Portis essentially ruled himself out of Monday night's game despite returning to practice Friday.

He didn't participate in full contact work at Friday's practice. "The way things look, bro, you'll probably be seeing 2-6 against Dallas," Portis said. "But who knows? If not, I should be ready for Houston. They want me to be 100 percent." Portis is targeting Week 2, so his owners should too. Source: CBS.Sportsline.com
