C'mon parents....stopped with the EFFed up names.. (1 Viewer)

OK, since everyone on this board is so good at giving non-sarcastic, heart-felt advice, and I just happened to see this thread ,I'll post up:We're having our first child (a son) next Monday (going in for a c-section as the baby is breech) My wife keeps suggesting the name Griffin as a first name. It was her mother's maiden name and she thinks it would make a cool first name. She tells me people could call him "Griff" and it would be great. Me: not thinking that is such a good idea.I like something simple and honest, like SamAm I wrong here?
:X Thats a gross name...Griffin? Thats sad. Poor kid.Samuel wouldnt be bad, nickname Sam, but Griffin?I havent read this thread at all but this last page, but what is the deal with making kid's first name with a last name? I friggen hate that.

My buddy's youngest brother is named Griffin, and yes, Griff is a nickname that some use. I think it works...then again, we named our son Hamilton so you may not like my opinion. More importantly though, I think you two should agree on this completely so keep at it.

Does naming your kid Hamilton make it more or less likely he'll be an obese kid? I'd think less because I would really watch his food intake so he's doesn't end up as the overweight teenage sniper named Ham. You are testing destiny though.

My sister in law named her son Hunter when he was born 14 years ago.

I told my wife at the time what his name or nickname would evolve into. It started out Hunter..then ####er..now the guys on his team just call him well you can guess and it has 4 letters starts with a C and rhymes with Hunt. The kid hates his name with a passion and wants to just use his middle name of Patrick now.

Guy I work with names his two kids Jet and Oliver. The second kid has two middle names, one of which is the same as the first kid.

Edit to add - Jet Reeve Kane and Oliver Sterling Kane.

This is possbily your only son - the boy who will grow into a man and carry your name on. If you don't like the name then you can't bend. Most times I'll conceed that the wife ultimately gets what she wants, and the man only gets what he wants when the wife doesn't care all that much. But naming a child is one time when you have to stick to your guns... ESPECIALLY when it comes to naming a son.If you like Griffin then that's fine... but if you don't like the name do NOT cave in to your wife. Work it out until you both come up with a name that you can agree on.If I had caved my son would be named Brady! :X :yucky:

Here are some doozies from yesterday's paper:

(first and middle names only)

Derek Brooks...Cappy had a kid?

Cemauri Andrew...huh?

Malachi Deondre...double huh?

Dakota Sage (girl)...sounds like a tumble weed you'd find on the plains

Damien Faith...satanists?

Serenity Ariana...$10 says she gets a stripper pole for her 13th birthday

Marley Kawaii...he's my favorite rastafarina ukelele player

Nadally Judith...Natalie down?

Cerenity Marie...stripper name + misspelling for double word score

Justin Case...I swear to larryboy I'm not making this up. That's the kid's first and middle names.
Where in the paper do you find these.... :lmao:
Once a week they print a list of births. Parents names, weight, length etc. It's always a good read.
What do you care how much a parent weighs anyway?
yeah, my first thought when I hear the length and weight is "well, at least they got their bait back."

Maybe you should take your nephew aside and toughen him up a little. So, instead of hating his given name, he can just beat the crap outta anyone who makes fun of his name.

Giggity giggity!Pick a different word from your post like "Monday" or "Caesar" (Cesarean)

I don't know. I named my girl Carlie and got blasted by Posty about 18 months ago for spelling it wrong. I thought Carlie was a pretty conventional choice.

I agree with not using last names for first names, but for the most part, I don't care. It's not my kid. I wouldn't name them anything really weird, but I don't care what anybody else does.

I think a hard and fast rule should be not to give a last name to your kid for his first name.....
In the South, it's kind of normal to see a child named after the grandmother's maiden name. I knew girls with first names like McNair, Dowling, etc. It's kinda ####ed up.

Hey, my last name is Griffin!! :excited: I wonder if we are related?Seriously, people call me Griff, Griffdog, G, and 'chuckles' (gdb high school nicknames that stick :hot: )Personally, I think it's a dumb to use a last name as a first name unless it's like James or Scott.YMMV

I've got a couple of female students with names like that...one of them has a flip-flopped name like McKenna Stacy. I still want to call her Stacy or Miss McKenna.
My friends have a kid named McKenna. I kind of like it.

Why not combine the two? Grifsam.

We just had our first kid about 8 months ago, and we went for the unusual, but reading the thread, I have to say the one I always liked was Hunter. I played ball with a guy named Hunter and I always liked the idea of naming my son Hunter and his middle name Killer. I figured it would destin him to either be a great Soviet attack sub or a middle linebacker.

My wife met someone who named her daughter Abcde (pronounced like a combination of Abby and Cassidy - Ab-sa-dee)

One of my coworkers used to be a teacher and she knew another teacher who had twin boys in one of her classes - named Lemonjello and Orangejello - pronounced "le-MON-gelo" and "or-ON-gelo".

One of my sons friends is named Mackenzie Graham. Their school registers are always written Surname, Given name...the prinicpal has stumbled on which way to call out Mackenzies name a dozen times at assemblies. I always pity the kid. If your last name sounds like a first name, please don't give your kid a first name that sounds like a last name.

Oh here's another one, my wife is dead-set on Olivia for a girl.  I don't think it is uber-gay, just sort of gay.  It sounds like a grandmother's name.  FWIW, I don't think my input counts on this one.

HTH, official ruling?
Olivia isn't bad....I just can't think of a decent nickname for Olivia.....I wouldn't fight Olivia if the wife set on it. You're good to go......
Ollie?

I am a James. My brother was David, and my father Charles. My uncles were a) James (father's side) b) James (mom's side), c) Robert d) William, e) Lee. My nephew's names are Michael and Thomas.

If I were to be fortunate enough to bear a son, his name will come from the very short list of Michael, James, Charles, David, William, Robert, Mark, John, Matthew etc.

God bless my family - turns out they're a lot smarter than I ever gave them credit for being.

Misspelling your kids name drives me ape ####. "His name is Dkjecnuybtl Jounchguygvb Smith. We call him Don." THEN WHY DIDN'T YOU EFFIN NAME HIM Donald?!? His friends will call him DJ anyway!@!!!

My sister taught a girl who's name was SHlTHEAD. Pronounced: Shi-THEED.

Sorry for avoiding any filters.. but it's her name.

Overheard at the park today: Linus

My wife works for a health care company and saw the name "Jealousy" on a chart today. At least they spelled it right.

They were saving that for a daughter.

Pulled over a guy named Delicious Peters 15 years ago. Someone actually named their boy DELICIOUS. If the surname was "Smith" it would still be ridiculous.
If you did not immediately let him go after seeing that name you sir have no compassion for the unfortunate.

Maximus...

No kidding.  I witnessed two very proud and culturally gifted parents chasing their child around a McDonald's play pen recently.  The child's name was Maximus.

Not Max.  Not Maximilian.  Not a family name either, as I asked.  I had to despite the wife's request to let it go.

I guess Indiana Jones, Han Solo, Obi Wan and Luke are probably over done so I can see how the happy couple came to this decision.
I would still have no qualms about naming my kid SHAZAM, however.
I've seen someone working a fast food place with a name tag reading Abracadabra.Kavindra was also on duty with him. :D

that's what this thread is about. people actually do name their kids with some "cool" names like "Hunter Killer". it's messed up.

Again, the name was given to enough kids during that period that it brought attention to it. I didn't make it up but thanks for thinking that I did. The names you mentioned I have never heard of but I have heard and know more than one Rotunda.

:lmao: thought at thinking I just made it up or heard about it.
Not that it matters at all, but if you can provide any evidence of more than 3 or 4 people being named rotunda in 1964 or 1965, I'll happily concede your point (though technically, the name still wouldn't be "popular.") Till then, I maintain my original post that your are full of ####.
And I care because why?Sure you can google up and find enough references or come down to Dallas sometime. Let me know.
or go ask Nigel, he's got like 30 friends named Rotunda.
Hell, that's nothing. I have 6 friends in Dallas named Grassynole.ok, that's BS.

I don't have 6 friends.
:lmao:

My girlfriend's middle name is her paternal grandmother's maiden name: CannonShe has a normal first name though. :hangover:

We have a boy here in Pre-K (4 year old) named Santa no ####.

And his sister (3 years old) is named Toto.

People, please:  NO VERBS.  VERBS ARE NOT NAMES.
Doug, Barry, Chuck, Mark, Phil, Lance, Rob, Carrie, Bill, Mary, Will, Neal, Don are all no good then?
THAT IS CORRECT!
Actually, those are mostly good.Imperative verbs that don't require an object are bad. Most of those are either not imperatives or don't work without an object.
Do you ever take a day off?
Smoo is fighting the good fight.Do not ever question him again. TIA.

was his daughter's name gatherer?

Seems like everybody wants their kid to have a cool name just in case he gets famous.

Gb my cousin naming his boy Henry after his grandfather. Probably be the only Henry alive in 60 years.

Boy's names are tough. My wife wanted to name our son Flynn or Fin I vetoed both. I wanted to name him Tank she vetoed that. We eventually settled on Cole
