Commisioner Help on Defensive Points Allowed (1 Viewer)

I have already made my decision as Commishioner and Co-Commishioner is in agreement, but wanted to just triple check with the Pool to make sure my reasoning is sound.

We are on MFL.com for our 4th or 5th year now. Our scoring rules have not changed since creation and are carried over from year to year. Minor tweaks have been made in the offseasons and always with announcement to entire league is made of them (almost all changes are put up for a vote before changed). The scoring rule in question has never been altered.

Our scoring system (for what applies in this scenario) is copied and pasted for "Def Rules":

Total Points Allowed 15-21: 2 points

Total Points Allowed 22-40: 0 points

Total Points Allowed 41-99: -2 points

Team A had Cleveland DST/ST this week. They played Cincinnati where the final score was 41-20 Bengals. Two of Cin's touchdowns were scored by their Defensive/Special teams, not by their offense. So in theory Cleveland DST should not be penalized for this as it was not in their control, which was Team A's premise. I agreed with him 100% and think it is bogus. Team A lost by 1 point this week, and if those Cinn DST touchdowns didn't count against him, he would have had 0 points instead of -2, thus him winning the game this week by 1 point, instead of losing it. This is also a big deal not only in win-loss, but division and playoff hunt implications as well. Does not eliminate, but makes things harrier for him.

We had similar situation last year in the middle of the year where the bonus points for QB yardage total was off from where it was suppose to be causing Co-Commish to lose a game. We discussed it then and decided we have all played by the same rules for better or worst and would fix it after the season is over for future seasons. After talking about this current situation with Co-Commish, even though we agree with Team A's argument, we think waiting til the end of the season is best for the league as well. We have all played under these same rules this year, and years past, even though its a shotty rule. If I had added a caveat like some other rules in our bylaws or it was a glitch I would have fixed the scores, but this was not the case.

I have already contacted MFL on how I can fix this for future seasons.

Your thoughts?

All that matters is what your league rules say. If your rules clearly state that ONLY points allowed with the defense on the field count toward defensive points allowed, then that's what it should be (no matter what scoring settings are checked on MFL). If it is simply a wrong scoring setting on MFL, that is easily corrected.

However, if your league rules do not explicitly state that only defensive points count (and by extension special teams points do not count), then you can't change how things are scored after the fact.

MFL is scoring it correctly.

It is an easy fix, and MFL allows you to score only points when the defensive team is on the field. Team A has no argument, he cannot change the rules midseason because it now matters to him. Change it from Total Points after the season, and complain about rotten luck.

You are handling scoring issues the right way when you discuss them but make no changes until the off season. Continue to do so.

Normally, I favor changing a score when there is a discrepancy between the League Rules and the website.

But if your League Rules do not mention this particular issue, then you absolutely need to leave the score unchanged.

Yes, the rule as it's currently written isn't great, but as everybody else as said here, you don't change the rule in the middle of the season. It's unfortunately been brought to light in less than ideal circumstances, but at least now you're aware that it needs to be changed!

"Total" means total, and that's the rule you've had for 4-5 years. I don't see any evidence of written rules contradicting that.

The idea of changing it now is horrible. If you did that retroactively it would impact multiple games, playoff seeds, etc.
