Commissioners. Do you lock free agents after your draft? (1 Viewer)

Just wondering the pluses and minuses of having a free-for-all after the draft. I guess the biggest minus would be no sort of waiver wire process yet. Someone who happened to be in front a computer could pick up a player's backup if the starter got hurt during practice or in a pre-season game without having everyone else get a chance to do so. We're doing out draft this Sunday so there are a couple of weeks for injuries to happen.

I originally had no waivers until the season started, but my owners all #####ed, and so I instituted a weekly waiver request with the same order as the rookie draft order, 2 rounds per week until the season starts.

I am not and have never been a fan of free-for-all waivers. Just the fact that you are the first one to hit the website should not give you first dibs on all the players you want.

I lock up free agents until after Week 1 when waivers would then run. The rule goes like this, you have to start the year with the garbage you drafted. We implemented it after the year Fast Willie became the #1 due to injury right before the season started. A sweet pickup like that shouldn't go to who was at their CPU when the news broke.

I have done this every year as well, but we are changing this year due to popular demand. The theory was that part of the draft strategy is to field a starting lineup for week 1. We don't have restirctions on which positions you need on your roster, so you could have 16 QBs if you really wanted to. What's happened in the past is some of these clowns will draft 8 RBs hoping to strike gold within the first few weeks and then they get caught with their pants down when they realize the TE they drafted was banged up already (at the time of our draft) and then doesn't play in week 1.I think having a "free-for-all" after the draft is a dumb idea if your league does waivers. What you should have leading up to week 1 is a regular waiver period (like any other week) and then a free agency period right after that. It should just be like another week, although this time you aren't waiting until after the week 1 games are played to do your first week of waivers/free agency.

We used to have a free for all until after week one based on a waiver system, but this year we switched to the new blind bidding system ESPN has and it eliminates the problem. During the preseason have it process on Wednesdays and Thursdays at 11AM cdt. Since preseason games run Thurs - Mon this gives everyone a little bit of time to recap what happened and make their bids. (Starting Sept 6 the bid processing will change to mon, weds, thurs, fri, sat, and sun).

Waiver claims begin 0800 the day after the draft and run Tuesday night at 1900 before first Thursday game. First come first serve runs from then until kickoff on Thursday.

I will not commish or play in a league where a free for all is implemented. It's not fair to guys that have to work and then because one owner is allowed to listen to sports talk all day and gets the breaking news, then runs to the WW to pick up a player...that's an unfair advantage IMO and I realize it's not always popular but I want everyone to have an opp to get the info that is out there and draw trheir own conclusions. Then we have a blind bidding process.

Example...the other night Jordy Nelson was available in dyansty format and owners have $1,200 in monopoly money to use for the year..one owner bid almost $900 for him which I am sure was probably $400 too much but that is what happens when owners are forced to bid. Now he won't be able to grab as many players the rest of the year but that was his choice.

Not sure if that made a lot of sense but I am adamantly against a free for all.

We drafted early this year (last week) in a league I run because we always have a tough time getting everyone together the same weekend as we near labor day. Waiver oder was set in reverse order of your draft slot. We will be running a weekly waiver time right up until week 1 but if you go after someone you drop to the bottom of the waiver order.

Our league runs 1 set of waivers 48 hours after the draft with priority based on the reverse of he draft order. After that all FA's are available on a FCFS basis till the season starts. Any players dropped go thru waivers 24 hours after they are dropped.

I lock ours until after week 1 then blind bids take place. After the blind biding period ends, we have free for all pickups until gametime sunday. with all free for all pickups costing $1 out of your yearly free agent salary budget which is $70

was in a league where an owner questioned....

"why does the waiver wire period before the start of the season automatically go in reverse order of the draft"....?

created some good discussion......because if the thought is that if in a serpentine draft an advantage is really not supposed to be gained by the guys at the top of the draft, why should the guys at the bottom get first crack at the waiver period before the season starts........

a suggestion was made that the waiver order prior to the start of the season should just be drawn randomly much like the draft order itself was........

We do worst to first drop adds once a week. Each week before the season starts we have the same process with worst being whomever drew the 12 draft spot and the best being whomever drew the 1. We draft late so it is usually only 1 week. Somebody asked about it and I saw no good reason NOT to do it so we do now. Draft position, while not exactly the same as worst team, is close enough for gubment work.

I think it has been proven that the 1 spot does indeed have a slight advantage over the other 11 spots and in general the forst few spots have an advantage. We actually drawm not for draft spots, but for preference of draft spots. So the guy who gets the 1 has his choice of all 12 spots, the guy qho gets 2 chooses from what is left. ect ect.... Strategically we have had a couple of people near the end of the selection process take 12 just for the waiver wore preference pre season.
