This is the correct answer. If you figured it out on your own, no need for the spoiler tags.The guy was a smuggler. When the ship docked in the Carribean, his associates brought the contraband to his cabin. He hid the stuff in his cabin and disembarked when he returned to the U.S., passing through customs with no problem. He then took another cruise in the same cabin, and recovered the contraband. This time he did not need to pass through customs because the ship did not dock in a foreign port.
