Coward fatally ambushes 2 NYPD, commits suicide (1 Viewer)

I was just at the mall and 2 cops were directing pedestrians in the pouring rain across a main street. Some dopey kid, recording on his phone of course, walks past them (towards me) and says "cops suck" The look on their faces was painful to see. I said "thank you guys, Merry Christmas" They both said "thank you sir" at the same time.

So sad where we've come here in NYC since 9/11.

I wouldn't put much stock in anything young teens do or say. They live to get a rise out of teachers, parents, police, etc. Teens aren't a very respectful group in general. I know I hated cops when I was 13 or so. I just wanted free reign to do whatever I wanted.

Yeah but that was one brief moment. I'm sure they're hearing #### all day, just standing there trying to direct traffic on Christmas Eve in the pouring rain.

Sickening.

Seems very sad to me. The police are being portrayed as bad guys in the media and on social media because of events that are being portrayed badly and also as somehow reflecting on all cops everywhere. This is teh kind of thing that can leave lasting impressions and things have gotten way, way out of hand.

That must really suck knowing that every day there are people that look at you funny, make comments and judge you based on others’ actions. Watching you when you enter stores, making assumptions about you when applying for jobs or housing. Stopping and frisking you when your mixing your own business. Assuming you are a criminal when you are far from it. Oh were we talking about cops of black people?

Just imagine for a minute if the innerwebs were around during the height of the Vietnam War.

Most of these people hated cops before Eric Garner or Ferguson. This isn't anything new. Especially in certain communities, age groups.

Yeah, I forgot to mention, the kid was white (or maybe Hispanic) and the cops were black and Hispanic.

You had to ask? I immediately thought it was one of those attempts to draw out empathy in a case where its often hard to get any. Kinda like, "That sucks, doesn't it. I can identify with that."

I think this is a fairly extreme attitude in most places. The violent protests have burned through a lot of their goodwill. Even in the Bay Area it's really only Berkeley and Oakland that are still putting up with it.

Off duty, black cops in New York feel threat from fellow police

Reuters interviewed 25 African American male officers on the NYPD, 15 of whom are retired and 10 of whom are still serving. All but one said that, when off duty and out of uniform, they had been victims of racial profiling, which refers to using race or ethnicity as grounds for suspecting someone of having committed a crime.

The officers said this included being pulled over for no reason, having their heads slammed against their cars, getting guns brandished in their faces, being thrown into prison vans and experiencing stop and frisks while shopping. The majority of the officers said they had been pulled over multiple times while driving. Five had had guns pulled on them.

Desmond Blaize, who retired two years ago as a sergeant in the 41st Precinct in the Bronx, said he once got stopped while taking a jog through Brooklyn’s upmarket Prospect Park. "I had my ID on me so it didn’t escalate," said Blaize, who has sued the department alleging he was racially harassed on the job. "But what’s suspicious about a jogger? In jogging clothes?"
The black officers interviewed said they had been racially profiled by white officers exclusively, and about one third said they made some form of complaint to a supervisor.

All but one said their supervisors either dismissed the complaints or retaliated against them by denying them overtime, choice assignments, or promotions. The remaining officers who made no complaints said they refrained from doing so either because they feared retribution or because they saw racial profiling as part of the system.

White officers were not the only ones accused of wrongdoing. Civilian complaints against police officers are in direct proportion to their demographic makeup on the force, according to the NYPD’s Civilian Complaint Review Board.

Indeed, some of the officers Reuters interviewed acknowledged that they themselves had been defendants in lawsuits, with allegations ranging from making a false arrest to use of excessive force. Such claims against police are not uncommon in New York, say veterans

The crux of the biscuit is: how do we as a people get this #### turned around?

We need to get the best minds available on this...
sadly, i dont think this is something that can happen quickly. Well, i think it could. However, i dont think people would be willing to do what it takes to make it happen quickly. In fact people resisted programs that at the root were put in place to solve these issues. I think i wrote this before but i will write it again.

In the end alot of this can be solved by people of different backgrounds, races, socioeconomic levels, religions interacting on a regular basis. That means where they live, at work, at school, etc. The problem is this doesnt happen that often. As a result, people are pre judged based on what they see on tv, the news, entertainment, etc. And as a result, incidents like the one we are discussing in this thread are what we end up with: Officers that police communities where they fear all of the people irrationally and/or Communities that irrationally fear all cops based on what little they have seen in their neighborhoods(stop and frisk, harassment, violence) and as a result you end up with a very toxic situation. This isnt just about cops and minorities however.

These preconceived notions affect us everywhere. Think how that might impact a jury for example. Hiring managers. And even how it impacts us and how we react to these recent incidents. So my theory is that the more interaction there is, and i mean meaningful interaction, the less we rely on TV, news, movies, rap videos for our judgements and the more we base them on actual experiences. Over time i think this helps the issues that affect our institutions. Because legally, police are allowed to kill if they are in fear. And in many of these incidents, i believe they really do fear for their lives(i believe Darren Wilson feared for his life). But if an officer fears one race more than another, even on a subconscious level, think about how that affects your decisions, without you realizing it. You may profile them more, stop and frisk them more, be more aggressive when restraining them, and maybe, just maybe you reach for your gun and pull that trigger a split second faster.

So going back to the more recent cases, people are upset at the institutions that seem to allow this stuff to happen over and over. And maybe im way off here with my theory. But i think if we focus on why this stuff is occurring and how we can fix it, it will be a much more beneficial discussion as opposed to who is at fault or who said what during a protest.

I wonder how many people would have clapped if it was mostly black people in the stands ,instead of the predominantly white hockey fans in attendance
Yep. White people rooting for cops. Even if they are 50% minority. How often do black people root for white people?

Petulant little children. God forbid a Mayor side with justice over the Blue Line.

And seems somewhat disrespectful to Officer Ramos' family, particularly after the Mayor was invited by the deceased's family to make a statement.

complete list of groups who stage protests at funerals:

- Westboro Baptist Church

- New York Police Department

And that should be visited on cops? You make it sound like 'turnabout is fair play'. It is?
He didn't say that.
Hence it was phrased as "you make it sound like" as in the way of an implication or supposition in what he did say.
:lmao:

So, it's okay for people to protest against cops, but cops aren't allowed to protest? Got it.

i guess you're only in favor of protesting if you are in agreement with what they are protesting about, eh?

Are cops allowed to strike?

IIRC they are not because they are part of the fundamental service of government.

Why then should they be allowed political manifestation?

There was a full police strike in New Orleans once, had to cancel Mardi Gras, which is like canceling life itself. So yeah they can strike.

I think his problem was more the protesting at the funeral, not that they were protesting. Im ok with anyone protesting, but a funeral isn't really the place.

Its still fascinating to me that the NYPD are basically upset at Deblasio for being honest.

I agree that it wasn't the best place to do it, but they've done it to him everywhere, so it's not like they picked the funeral as the only place to do it. I think that just shows how much anger there is now in the police force towards the mayor.

You don't support unions?

A Sea of Blue, Mourning the First of Two Slain Comrades At Funeral for Officer Rafael Ramos, Police Department’s Solidarity Is on DisplayThe broad Queens avenue began filling with blue coats early. The footsteps of the saddened officers, the buzz of police talk, fed the medley of sounds of an apprehensive city shaking itself awake.

The temperature was generous for the season. Christmas decorations bedecked doorways and windows, clashing with the morning’s solemn event: the funeral of a police officer whose barbaric death has sliced deep into the city’s conscience and tested its character.

On Saturday, one week removed from the slayings, the city wept for an officer, Rafael Ramos, N.Y.P.D. Shield No. 6335, who was murdered Dec. 20 along with another officer for their choice of occupation.

The turnout was extraordinary. Though no reliable count was made, it appeared that more than 20,000 police officers came to Queens, from as far away as Wisconsin and California and England, some driving through the night to make it. Bordering streets were shut to traffic for blocks around. Traffic lights continued to change their colors, but there was no traffic, nothing but thick rows of police officers as far as anyone could see. ...

What a tremendous show of support from across the country. Unfortunately the AlSharptons have tried to make a national issue out of isolated incidents in different places, and if that's how they're being attacked then that is how they will support each other. Apparently this was quite a moving, proud and tremendously sad event.
