These cops were part of a safety initiative in Bed-Stuy that had seen crime drop 33%. They were helping people, in a largely minority neighborhood no less.

Yeah, the level of animosity here is unprecedented. You can't have the police interrupting his speeches and turning their backs on the Mayor of the most important city in the world. Wouldn't be surprised if this spirals to the point where the Mayor has to step down.

This story is obviously going to reverberate in man different ways, but keep your eye on the "inciting violence" angle. There's been a lot of irresponsible "free speech" going on recently that I think you'll see being curtailed going forward. I don't think you'll be seeing any t-shirts like this being sold legally in the future...

My first thought is that this was a senseless and cold blooded murder perpetrated by a lunatic. I'm not sure what other "insights" I am expected to give at this point; several hours after it happened. I just found it interesting that your first reaction was to bring up Sharpton and De Blasio.

Hey, Lee Greenwood, life in the city existed before and after 9/11. People...actions. While it was primarily the FDNY who were running up the stairs, countless immeasurable sacrifices were made by NYPD. Not sure what that has to do with this.

I guess because I'm shocked by a protest through NYC calling for the deaths of NYPD cops, I'm surprised by the execution murders of NYPD cops because they are cops, and I'm just hoping that ultimately we all support them at this moment, and most especially I hope that New Yorkers support them. On that last point I'm sure they will.

I don't think anyone's saying he could have prevented them. But he certainly doesn't have to help foster an anti-police environment. He clearly chose who to support and who not to support, and now it's come back to bite him in the ###. I've never seen such hostility towards a Mayor from a Police Department. Openly accosting him during press conferences. Turning his back on him when he walks by. It's like a football team that won't walk into the huddle because the hate their Quarterback.

Can I both respect the NYPD and post about some weird stuff that happened to me there?
I was dragged off of the street -- I literally took a step out of a roped off area off a bar -- with a gin and tonic. I was, in the cop car, threatened with various physical acts, including forcible sodomy, jail, and no trial nor lawyer for a week. I hadn't said a word. This was literally the response I got for a dumb-assed, white boy action.
I know this isn't the right place, but there are serious issues with that department, and I'll never forget my utter fear at being shoved in the back of a car, not resisting, and being ####ed with in a major way. I can't imagine what it's like for not such a clean-cut, relatively young white dude. I don't like Jack White's posting because he's an insensitive idiot about all things, but I've seen the NYPD do messed up stuff. They've towed my car without notice and moved it to different spots and just shrugged.*
