Dallas targeting McFadden in '08?

Posted: Sunday April 29, 2007 12:28PM ET

Go ahead and pencil Arkansas RB Darren McFadden as Julius Jones' replacement in 2008. Jerry Jones said his scouts are already working on next year's draft, but he declined to discuss specific prospects. He was asked if the Cowboys might be targeting McFadden with the pick they got from the Browns in the Brady Quinn deal. "Darren McFadden? Who's he play for?" Jerry said with a wink.

If, (and that's a BIG IF) he's available I don't see why not, but with Turner being an UFA they could sign him and use the pick for other positions.

a common mistake is to assume where Cleveland will land in next year's draft . . .a) today's NFL is fluid; today's doormat is tomorrow's playoff contender . . .

b) specifically, Cle has added an OT and a QB to go with the Soldier, Edwards, Jurevicius, and Jamal Lewis; I expect improvement to make Cle's position (at best) #10 or so . . . I've heard that McFadden is a top 5 prospect . . .

Who, aside from MAYBE San Diego, St. Louis, New Orleans, and Minnesota, wouldn't be targeting McFadden? And actually, New Orleans probably is.

JJ's replacement? why would they want to draft a backup rb in the first round? :goodposting:
That's what good teams do.....as long as the pick is worthy. You saw the Rams do it with Jackson when Faulk had just a couple years left.Julius Jones isn't an everydown all season back.I agree though, you can't count on Cleveland's pick being some top 5 pick. Anything can happen and it could end up being a mid round pick. It is what it is, Dallas needs to stop patting themself on the back on getting that first round pick and worry about the season that's gonna be played before getting that pick.Their defense fell apart the 2nd half of the season and someone needs to put some pressure on the QB and cover some wide receivers!.

I was alluding to the fact that they have MBIII, who, by some accounts, will be the starter. Unlike the Faulk/Jackson situation, MBIII is not an aging breaking down back and he can be an every down player. But I suppose if they don't have any other needs, they could use a first round pick on another rb.

If Dallas is going to parlay Cleveland's pick into the acquisition of McFadden, they are in all likelihood going to have to do so by trading up with both of their 1st rounders. I think Cleveland will be improved this year, how much remains to be seen.
