Crazy what ifs (sports) (2 Viewers)

What if there was a human who was like 10 feet tall, 500 pounds, and had the quickness/agility/speed of a guy like Tyreek Hill, and played NFL running back, basically unstoppable to the point where a team just handed him the ball 3-4 times in a row till they scored?

What if there was a human 11 feet tall weighing 500 pounds who shot a basketball like Steph Curry with the ball skills and ability of Jordan?

Would there be any rule changes??

Would that be good or bad for the sport?

I've always been partial to a hockey goalie so large he can stuff himself into the entire net. 🥅
I saw a pro lacrosse highlight the other night. Zero interest, but when they showed a shot go by an immobile goalie I could not believe the sheer size of him. Especially compared to the goal. I had to rewind it. It wasn't the size of the man, it was all the padding. Like, a ridiculous amount.

He looked like a ginger-bread man. His arms and legs stuck out and he wobbled like a baby in one of those big down onesies. Covered like 90% of the goal, it's stupid.

And the athleticism involved must be restricted with that amount of equipment. Cut it back and make the goal smaller if need be, it's comical as it stands.

What if Usain Bolt played wide receiver? He'd be open deep every play, it'd just be up to the QB to hit him in stride for an easy touchdown every snap.

What if Andre the Giant had the gracefullness of a ballerina and could plie leap but also had the court vision and pass accuracy of Jokic? He could probably dunk an 11-foot rim and lead the league in rebounds and assists.

What if you scooped out the eyes from Ted Williams' frozen head and put them in Aaron Judge's skull but then also gave him the adamantium skeleton and ability to heal from Wolverine and the dedication to martial arts training from Batman and he also got the echolocation ability from actual bats? I don't know how that would help his baseball skills but he's probably look kinda weird chirping like a dolphin all the time trying to echolocate things to karate chop, that's for sure.

Why?

Just because someone is faster than the guy covering him doesn't mean he's automatically open deep. Otherwise the fastest player in the NFL currently would be open every play. Or any time a WR is covered by a DB that is slower than them (which happens all the time).

My son created a player with nearly this profile for his NCAA Madden game. The guy has won three Heismans at three different schools so far.

Seems like there's someone out there who could do this. Other than some bruises here and there, SHUTOUT!!!!
My Dad always wanted to see what would happen if you just got the biggest Sumo wrestler and put him in there.
The Sports Science guys took a run at why this won’t work.

It seems like the easiest one is a super tall guy with a little strength playing WR. Just have him go 5 yards downfield and throw it up really high. Seems unstoppable on the goal line.
Teach Shaq to catch a football and you’re golden.

Nah what if you got someone small and light to play WR, but he had wings and could fly above all the other players? He could even take laterals in the backfield, launch himself up, and fly over the field every play while the other players tried to knock him down by throwing their helmets at him, but he'd still swoop and zoom around everyone and land in the end zone for a score every time.

fwiw, Bolt was given a pro soccer contract in Australia.

didn't work out... because sports are more than running fast.

what if there's a guy who literally can't be knocked over- by anyone. put him at RB.

but he's 3' tall, runs a 26.8 100 and has a moustache that's so thick it covers his upper face, blinding him.

zone coverage down?

Ball only needs to cross the plane. If he were to land in the end zone, it would merely be to celebrate with his non-flying teammates.

The conclusion's probably right, but I thought that segment was pretty week. Obviously just putting a huge guy in the net with absolutely no training is not going to work out well. And the shooter is standing still at close range with a stationary puck, so everything is in favor of maximum accuracy.

Similarly everybody knows that "length" is extremely helpful in basketball, but I expect if you just found the dude with the world's longest arms and told him to defend an NBA point guard he'd get destroyed in the same manner the Sumo dude did.

Not sure I understand a thread where all the crazy what ifs aren't actual something that seems realistic.

Should we just ask what if someone learned to fly - they could be the best NBA or NFL player in the world.

Bolt would still have to catch the ball.
Al Davis was obsessed with drafting the fastest guys, it didn’t make them all good football players.

I've genuinely wondered why no baseball team has tried to reincarnate the "Eddie Gaedel" strategy. It was great in concept, but Gaedel was still too tall at 3'7".

If the strike zone is defined as the area over home plate from midpoint between a batter's shoulders and the top of the uniform pants -- when the batter is in his stance and prepared to swing at a pitched ball -- and a point just below the kneecap, and you put the world's shortest man, Chandra Bahadur Dangi (21.5" tall) at the plate, his strike zone would be at best 8" or so tall.

Save him to pinch-hit when you really needed a guy on base, and it might work.

Guessing one of mine might be possible in like 5 thousand years. Just picture that guy ahead of his time....

Weeble wobbles but that can't fall down

I was thinking more like this

Oh I remember weebles. I'm old.

I imagine they don't want to use a valuable roster spot on a guy who might bat once a week and then you have to immediately pinch run for if it works?
Plus so many umpires are so thin skinned they may just call a strike just because.

The Commissioner made it illegal immediately after the game.

The Juggernaut in the backfield taking handoffs, I love it
It could be that he's really big or it could be that he has like 10 legs that all point out in different directions, so if you knock him off whatever legs he's using he just falls onto different ones. I guess the same dude would be pretty useful in soccer as well as he could hit just about any ball near him on the volley with one of his legs.

Made what illegal? Being a short baseball player? I'm sure we can have that challenged on the basis of discrimination...j/k

The team owner did challenge the commissioner's decision... by demanding that Phil Rizzuto be checked to see if he was indeed really just a 'tall dwarf'.

I thought the rule change was just to require that the Commissioner needs to approve the contract of any player. Not any rule requiring a minimum height for a batter.
